 BIO - NjHouseHead is the newest, rawest, diamond in the rough House Music producer bringing that true House Music flava with his fresh smooth funky vibe ! In the early 90's, Enjay was introduced to House Music when he began dancing and battling at local parties and clubs in Newark and New York City. He was influenced by presently renown Dj's such as Kerri Chandler, Todd Terry, Dj Disciple, Dj Dove,  Louie Vega, Kenny Dope, Tony Humphries, John Robinson, Pal Joey, and so many other Dj's who were in their prime in that golden 90's era of House. During that time Enjay was a featured dancer and extra on the television show, MTV's The Grind and really deep in the New York underground dance music club scene. As his love for house music grew and evolved, in 2000 Enjay went back to his roots as a musician and decided to create the music that he so much loved. After overcoming the obstacles of life, NjHouseHead is back and he is in the zone and ready to take the dance music world by storm ! The man who wears many musical colors. 

Those seven words eloquently capture the multifaceted essence of Donald Lawrence. Songwriter. Producer. Composer. Music/choir director. Recording artist. The guiding force behind such No. 1 hits as “Encourage Yourself,” “Back II Eden” and “The Blessing of Abraham.” Equally at home in both the inspirational and contemporary arenas, the multiple Grammy and Stellar Award winner has collaborated with a diverse roster, including such marquee names as Karen Clark Sheard, Donnie McClurkin, Kirk Franklin, En Vogue and Mary J. Blige.

“It’s said that the music you do is where you’ve lived,” says Lawrence of his creative journey. “What I do isn’t contrived. I don’t think in terms of genre or religious perspective. It comes from being honest. I just honor the gift and purpose I was given to touch the world and inspire. And people have paid attention to that.”

Indeed they have—to the tune of 20 years and counting. After scoring his second No. 1 gospel album with 2011’s YRM (Your Righteous Mind), Lawrence is preparing to commemorate his anniversary milestone with the first of two albums featuring live re-recordings of select songs from his vast catalog complemented by several new tracks. Due this fall, the first Light Records volume, titled Best for Last, was recorded primarily in Chicago with longtime songwriting/production colleagues Daniel Weatherspoon and Percy Bailey. The second volume, slated for 2014, will be recorded primarily in Charlotte near Lawrence’s Gastonia, North Carolina birthplace.

Also joining Lawrence for the two-volume series is a host of special guests, many of whom have played important roles in his career. The list includes Karen Clark Sheard, Kierra Sheard, Kelly Price, Lalah Hathaway, Hezekiah Walker, Stephanie Mills and Yolanda Adams. Adams’ bring-the-house-down vocals on volume one’s title track kick off a rousing celebration 20 years in the making. Yet its chorus also hints that Lawrence doesn’t plan to rest on his laurels anytime soon: “Although you may think that your time has passed \ God only saving the best for last \ Your future greater than the past.”

“I don’t know why it’s said that your best days are your youth,” explains Lawrence of the song’s message. “The Scripture talks about your latter being greater than the former. I wanted to speak to people who feel it’s a wrap. It’s never too late to dream.”

Additional standouts include “The Gift Looks Good on You” and “Hebrews 4:9.” Both are spirited lessons revolving around Lawrence’s central theme of grace. In this instance, he is talking about grace as talent; that people should stop looking across the fence at what others may possess and instead honor their own gifts. “Most people think grace is covering sins, but it’s also an area of divine enablement,” he says. “Some people have the grace to write or sing. I do music. Don’t covet someone else’s grace; honor yours. And if you honor it, God will allow you to take it to a broader arena.”

Lawrence began taking charge of his grace while growing up in Gastonia, NC. Raised by a gospel-loving aunt and influenced by gospel pioneer Walter Hawkins, he taught himself the piano at 15. From there, Lawrence put himself through the prestigious Cincinnati Conservatory of Music as a musical theater major. He and Worth Gardner, one of the school’s professors, later wrote the 1986 musical revue “Sing Hallelujah!,” which toured across the country and played off Broadway. 

After a stint on the musical staff of the TV series “PTL Club,” Lawrence trained his sights on secular music when he was asked to become vocal coach for hit-making R&B/pop female group En Vogue. The early ‘90s found him integrating both worlds. That’s when he began an eight-year tenure as music director for Broadway/R&B star Stephanie Mills while honing the groundbreaking urban inspirational style of his own choir, Company. Signed to Giant Records, Company released its debut album, Devotion, in 1993. 

Concurrently, Lawrence started sending songs to a North Carolina-area group called the Tri-City Singers. Hired to succeed the act’s former musical director, he helped the group claim a No. 2 debut on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart with 1993’s A Songwriter’s Point of View. The set, melding hip-hop and other contemporary rhythms, featured guest turns by Peabo Bryson and Mills. Over the next 12 years, Lawrence & the Tri-City Singers issued a string of top five gospel albums, including No. 1 Bible Stories, tri-city4.com and Go Get Your Life Back. These releases sported such memorable hits as “Testify,” “Message to the Saints” and “The Best Is Yet to Come.” The albums also boasted an array of guests, including Clark Sheard, Ann Nesby, Kelly Price and Kim Burrell. 

Lawrence & the Tri-City Singers retired in 2006, culminating their run with a cross-country, sold-out tour and a live recording, Finale. The project spun off the hits “Encourage Yourself” and “The Blessing of Abraham” with the latter spending 18 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Gospel Songs chart. 

Two years prior, Lawrence stepped out with his first solo album, the Donald Lawrence & Co.-headlined I Speak Life, with cameos by Donnie McClurkin, Hezekiah Walker, Faith Evans, Lalah Hathaway and jazz icon Ramsey Lewis. Featured hits included “You Covered Me” and the anthem “Healed.” He followed that with a second No. 2 album, 2009’s The Law of Confession, Part I, and the hit “Back II Eden.” He then scored his second No. 1 with YRM (Your Righteous Mind). 

Lawrence’s musical passion continues to manifest itself through various pursuits. He has written and produced for the legendary Clark Sisters, Clark Sheard, Kirk Franklin and Hezekiah Walker (including No. 1 single “Souled Out”), among others. After earning his master’s degree in fine arts at Chicago’s Columbia College, he was asked to join the school’s faculty where he still teaches intermittently. And in September, he’ll celebrate his sixth anniversary as host of Verizon’s national gospel choir talent competition “How Sweet the Sound,” working alongside Walker, Yolanda Adams, Tamela Mann and other special guests. Future plans include expanding into TV, film and Broadway projects. 

“New ideas and concepts for songs, new talent, more knowledge … the more creative I can be is what keeps me excited,” says the indefatigable Lawrence. “You reap what you sow.”

Founded in 1996 by Peter Adarkwah, Barely Breaking Even (BBE Music) started life as a London club night, taking its name from the eponymous Disco record by the Universal Robot Band.

The label grew from the vibrant early 90's club scene with its first release, Stop & Listen compiled by Dr Bob Jones in 1996, opening the door to iconic series' such as All Back To Mine & Late Nite Tales.

A tonne of releases followed, ranging from Disco to Funk, Jazz to House. In the year 2000, the label celebrated Masters at Work's 10th Anniversary with a mighty box set that featured near 80 tracks.

A year later BBE Music spawned the Beat Generation Series of artist albums, notably introducing J Dilla (Welcome 2 Detroit) & a young Will.I.Am's first solo outing, alongside DJ Jazzy Jeff, Madlib & DJ Spinna, all of whom contributed to this seminal set of long players.

A quarter of a century and well over 500 titles later, having worked with Mark Ronson, Roy Ayers, Questlove, Hugh Masekela, DJ Premier, Dimitri from Paris, Joey Negro, Kon, RZA, Laurent Garnier, Black Coffee, DJ Shadow, David Rodigan and John Morales among many others, BBE Music looks to the future, celebrating its rich heritage while continuing to release a bounty of fresh titles.

The label’s most recent projects include an expansive reissue series from pioneering Nigerian label Tabansi, new imprint ‘Batakari’ in association with Boddhi Satva and the critically acclaimed ‘J Jazz’ Japanese Jazz multi-album project, not to mention the recent landmark 500th label release: a brand new version of 'Barely Breaking Even', featuring Leroy Burgess, Patrick Adams and Louie Vega.

In 2021 BBE Music is celebrating its 25th anniversary. To mark this milestone, the label is offering up some special projects, from the 20th Anniversary edition of J Dilla’s ‘Welcome 2 Detroit’, through David Bowie tribute album ‘Modern Love’, to a special new ‘Worldwide’ compilation from old friend Gilles Peterson. Master Kev’s victory in a mix-off contest in the 1990’s proved that the years of obsessing over the mixes of Merlin Bobb, Timmy Regisford, Tony Humphries and others on radio and in clubs, studying underground dance and beat syncopation and accumulating a killer collection of records finally paid off . And as the number of shows soared, so did Kev’s talent. Soon after, hero Tony Humphries called Kev to ask him to join forces with him on his Yellorange Label. His answer? A triumphant ‘Hell Yeah’.
After spinning in his first WMC in the year 2000 and embarking on several trips to Europe, Asia, Australia, South America and beyond, with Tony Humphries and even solo, his DJ career was officially on the rise. Playing in some of the most prominent clubs in major cities all over the world and playing alongside some of the prominent names in the industry including Louie Vega, Timmy Regisford, David Morales, Danny Krivit, Kerri Chandler and so many more. Also, in 2000 Kev along with founder Marlon D and others helped form the Underground Collective - a collection of DJ’s, performers, musicians..etc created to draw exposure in the dance music industry to major labels and beyond.

While working with Tony Humphries at Yellorange from 1999 - 2004, Kev had many ‘Net Shows’ on the site along with Tony Humphries and the other Yellorange DJ’s that were updated once a month. Then in 2004, Kev started a weekly radio show on CyberJamz Radio (cyberjamz.com).  The show has grown more and more each year, with many producers giving Kev the upfront heat and unreleased jams. Also, many labels send Kev promo’s in hopes that those tracks/songs will be played on his very highly listened to radio show.  With the amount of weekly hits in the archives it was no wonder they would think of Kev to help promote the new music.These days u can find the Master Kev Mixshows on Soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/master-kev) which are updated frequently.

In 2006 Kev partnered up with long time friend and former Yellorange/Underground Collective DJ partner David ‘Vibes’ Tobon and keyboard wizard John Crockett to form MKDV.  They produced their first track together titled ‘Twisted’ which gained a lot of early support from the biggest names in the dance music industry and was a very popular release on DJ Spen's imprint Code Red as well as Defected Records and even being licensed by the one and only Carl Cox for his mix compilation that was released on Defected Records.  They also worked on original tracks for Tony Records and remixes for Louie Vega’s imprint Vega Records remixing Sara Devine’s ‘Special’ as well as remixes for Mel Cheren’s and Kevin Hedge’s (Blaze) West End Records.  In 2007 Kev partnered up with good friend Scott Wozniak to produce more tracks for Code Red & Defected titled ‘String Thing’ and ‘Uncooked’ .. ‘String Thing’ became the number 1 download on Defected and Traxsources website for weeks .. They also did some remixes on Stevie Wonder’s ‘My Cherie Amour’ and Joe Cocker’s ‘You Are So Beautiful’ (high in demand since the 2007 WMC) which were never released to this date.  Later that year Kev also partnered up with Abicah Soul and worked on original tracks and remixes as well. One of those tracks ‘Kora’ was released on Iwanni Records from Toronto.

With an abundance of traveling and playing in major clubs as well as major clubs back home in NYC such as Cielo, Santos, Sullivan Room..etc..work and the frequently updated podcast shows on Podomatic & Soundcloud, Kev was once again back in the studio this time with very talented Tony Loreto from Italy forming the MKTL brand. They have been working together a lot throughout 2009-2013. They have done remixes for Tortured Soul ,Arnold Jarvis, Kenny Bobien, Peven Everett, Underground Collective,Michelle Weeks, Boddhi Satva's Offering Label, DJ Spen's 'Code Red' label, Louie and Anane Vega for Vega Records and scores of others.

The Mission of Jazz at Lincoln Center is to Entertain, Enrich and Expand a Global Community For Jazz Through Performance, Education and Advocacy.
