Osoby, które dobrze mnie znają – Ci znający nieco mniej, być może również – niejednokrotnie słyszeli, bądź widzieli symptomy mojej fascynacji twórczością Billy Paula. Dla niektórych mogło to być czasem dość irytujące, słysząc jak po raz setny podkreślam prywatne znaczenie tego człowieka. Ale czy słusznie irytujące? Paul Williams, którego muzyka nie każdemu musi przypaść do gustu, był dla mnie po prostu artystą bardzo symbolicznym. Bowiem, zanim zdążyłem go jeszcze w ogóle poznać, owszem – miałem jakąś tam styczność z muzyką afro-amerykańską, lecz głównie przez kontakt z samplingiem. Bez większej refleksji przewijałem mnóstwo różnorakich utworów i płyt w poszukiwaniu próbek, w oparciu o które budowałem swoje aranżacje. I tak wyglądało to do dnia, w którym…

Dnia, w którym zupełnie przypadkowo natrafiłem na album „360 Degrees Of Billy Paul”. Jakież on wywarł na mnie wrażenie!

Przesłuchałem go od deski do deski, wielokrotnie – w pełnym skupieniu. Od razu zgrałem płytę także na player i na słuchawkach, w drodze autobusem, kolejne kilkanaście razy podziwiałem te osiem utworów. Pamiętam dokładnie jakie odczucia mi towarzyszyły. Byłem wtedy człowiekiem, którego playlista zawierała wyłącznie rapowe pozycje, a jednak potrafiłem delektować się spokojnymi, delikatnie śpiewanymi kompozycjami. I to zupełnie szczerze! Uważałem (zresztą tak zostało do dziś), że płyta ta od pierwszego, do ostatniego dźwięku jest doskonała. Taka, która nie zmusza słuchacza, by znudzony przełączał co drugi utwór. No i całość doskonale spięta klamrą, jaką niewątpliwie jest trafnie obrazująca okładka. Wtedy od razu obrałem za priorytet odkryć i posiąść całą dyskografię filadelfijskiego wokalisty. Naprawdę był to dzień, w którym coś zmieniło się w mojej muzycznej świadomości!

Po blisko 7. latach twierdzę, że ten pamiętny przypadek sprawił, iż kolosalnie poszerzyły się moje gusta oraz inspiracje, dzięki czemu także moja muzyka idzie w takim, a nie innym kierunku. I choć liczyłem, że uda mi się zrobić to na żywo – dziękuję Ci za to Panie Williams. Ja, Twój wierny fan.

Ponoć prywatne inspiracje muzyków zawsze mają spory wpływ na ich własną twórczość. Czym więc inspiruje się Cok? Czego spodziewać się po najnowszej publikacji Sosnowiczanina? Na album NuFunk składa się siedem instrumentalnych utworów czerpiących z gatunków boogie, future funk czy disco lat 80-tych. To wszystko przetworzone zostało przez personalną estetykę autora i przeniesione w odświeżonej formie na teraźniejszy grunt. NuFunk to przemyślana, melodyjna płyta oparta na brzmieniach klasycznych syntezatorów w akompaniamencie pulsujących rhodesów, okraszona delikatnymi, dopełniającymi fragmentami sampli. Całość skupiona wokół ciepłych, pozytywnie wybrzmiewających dźwięków, przywodzących na myśl wizję wyprawy cadillakiem w upalny, słoneczny dzień po ulicach Los Angeles. Ta podróż, dopełniona soundtrackiem NuFunk, mogłaby – oczywiście wciąż w wyobrażeniach – wzbogacić scenerię wielu filmów kina blaxploitation!

It is said that musican’s personal inspirations always have a big influence on their own music. So what is the main Cok’s inspiration? What can be expected from the newest production of a native of Sosnowiec? The album NuFunk consists of seven instrumental songs heavily influenced by boogie, future funk and 80’s disco. All of that was processed by author’s personal aesthetics, then refreshed and transferred into these days. NuFunk is a melodic and well thought album defined by classic synthesizer’s sound with a pulsatory rhodes with a pinch of complemented samples. The whole album is a very warm, positive sounding piece of art which brings to mind a vison of a soulful, Cadillac trip in the scorching, sunny day through the streets of Los Angeles. The journey with a company of NuFunk songs could have enriched – still as an imagination – a whole bunch of Blaxploitation movies!
