Solid Steel in association with Serato (24th April) This week we launch a brand new Solid Steel website at http://solidsteel.net and we're delighted to welcome back two guests Caribou and Colleen with exclusive new mixes to celebrate. They both appeared in the same show 10 years ago and on the new website you can hear their 2005 mixes in the Featured section, along with Caribou’s mix from 2000 when he was still known as Manitoba. Also released this week will be a mix from Matthew Herbert as Doctor Rockit (1995), Autechre mix (1997) and a Juan Atkins mix and interview from 1988, plus selected shows from the last 27 years and many more to come each week.
We even have new Solid Steel jingles for the first time in ages, and, over the coming weeks, you can hear what the likes of Luke Vibert, next week's guest Four Tet and FaltyDL (which starts the show this week) have come up with.

In Hour 2, Colleen is celebrating the release of her latest album 'Captain of None' which is out now on Thrill Jockey. It's a special "Thank You Jamaica" mix that is clearly dear to her heart and she tells us a little more about this love affair;

"My love story with Jamaican music is in three parts: first as a child in the late 70s/early 80s, when my parents bought (probably by accident) a tape containing mostly Lee Perry songs from 1976, which we would listen to on long car trips. Then in my mid-20s when I moved to Paris and bought and borrowed dozens of Jamaican reissues from the Paris music libraries – it was the first time I was listening to the music with a musician’s ear, but given my way of making music at that time (sampling from records) I ended up concentrating on other genres which could be of use as more “unrecognizable” sample-fodder. But in late 2012, just as I was recording my fourth album The Weighing of the Heart, I rediscovered the music and this time it hit me really deep – it was like my ears were finally in the right condition to really hear the music in all its amazing inventiveness, and I had also reached a point in my own way of making music where finally I could see how the Jamaican sense of freedom and experimentation could infuse my own music – and from that moment I knew in what direction I would take my next album, which became Captain of None.
This mix contains some of my favourite Jamaican music and showcases its incredible diversity, with everyone (singers, musicians, producers) at the top of their game and displaying real individuality. "

The Kraut Jazz Futurism compilation shows what's cookin’ in the new German Jazz scene. Young German bands and a few of the international musicians working in Berlin now. Fresh artists that combine Jazz, Kraut Rock, Afro, Hip Hop and Electronica in a new way.
The first part of the compilation came out last year and was described by The Wire as  „… a re-drawn map of underground Berlin. Refreshingly new, eccentric, badassed and sometimes funny.“ 
This second part goes further. Similar to Gilles Peterson’s We Out Here compilation, where he shows mainly the new hip english Jazz artists, on Kraut Jazz Futurism Kryptox records head honcho Mathias „Kapote“ Modica puts together what’s hot in the new club jazz scene in Germany. And there is a lot cookin’ in Berlin right now. Kraut Jazz Futurism comes out on Kryptox. Sublabel of Gomma & Toy Tonics records.

Karaba is the new band on Kryptox. The Berlin label founded to show what’s happening in the German Jazz crossover scene. One of these bands is Karaba from Munich. The band was already featured on the Kryptox Kraut Jazz Futurism Compilation in 2019.
Now they deliver their first album for Kryptox. Five young guys from Munich. Skilled and tight on their instruments and deeply rooted in the heritage of all kind of wild forms of jazz, krautrock and psychedelic music.

The kids began to jam together when starting to study music in 2012. Being from Munich, a town where legendary Kraut Rock bands like Amon Düül, Guru Guru and Embryo came from, the Karaba guys are obviously influenced by these german kraut and psychedelic sounds. You can hear that in many shades of this album: the complexity of the unusual rhythmical fundaments and percussive patterns. The Prog-Rock parts, with these partly abstract unisono lines and strange melodic figures or unexpected chord changes.

Karaba’s album starts with a slightly arabic feel. The repetitive groove of “Der Inder” gets the listener immediately into a different south-eastern space. Later the music gets more animated, more structured and more uplifting. A whole universe of little influences. Shades of certain Jazz and prog-rock bands: you might think about the canterbury scene of the 1960ies and 70ies. There are textures reminding of Soft Machine, Frank Zappa, Mats and Morgan, Kraan and maybe some Passport influences. (Another band from Munich that left a huge footmark in the worldwide jazz fusion history).
The whole Karaba sound has a certain 1970es feel. But not in a pure retro way. The LP sounds more like a modern psychedelic 2020 Lofi Indie Jazz thing – a sound that fits well in these wild times and finds its place in the actual scenario of new jazz bands worldwide.

Karaba - Der Inder

MIMS is delighted to host the world premiere of the first ever collaboration between Emanative and Vula Viel’s Bex Burch! And it’s a banger! Deep 808 drum machine and African-inspired percussion meets cold-wave post-punk. Producer and fellow percussion-addict Hector Plimmer even gets in on the action to sprinkle some additional charms.

Emanative makes his vinyl debut here for Shapes of Rhythm following contributions to their ‘Isolation Compilation’ and an ‘Awkward Corners EP’ both earlier this year. Known for his love of collaboration, Emanative connected remotely with Bex Burch during the global lockdown. 

Disrupt #4 is the result of a meeting of two percussive minds in the midst of a pandemic, and like all good things it started with a groove. Nick initially provided Bex with a hazy, 808 african-inspired sketch. What followed was a musical dialogue which quickly gained momentum.

A post punk-esque vocal mantra was added, reflecting the here and now of 2020 and driving the track forward. Bex’s trademark Ghanaian Gyil xylophone is the conversation with the groove throughout the track. Hector Plimmer also joins the collaboration, seasoning the mix with synthesizer and tape delays.

Released November 6th, strictly limited to 300 copies, the first 50 come with an inner signed by the artists, and the record and sleeve have been produced "as green as possible" by Deep Grooves in Amsterdam (the greenest vinyl pressing plant in the world). "Disrupt #4" is backed by an equally disruptive remix from Awkward Corners, whose debut LP this year surely ranks among this year’s best.
