Scuffed Recordings launch their new singles series Scuffed Bits with a double-sided single from Scuffed veteran @95Bones and label co-founder @wagerdj.

Scuffed have spent the past four years building a name for themselves as one of the most exciting underground UK club labels of recent years, picking up a DJ Mag Best of British nomination and being named as one of Mixmag’s labels of the year in 2021. Now they look ahead to 2022 with a brand new singles series, Scuffed Bits, which will release one-off singles from members of the Scuffed roster and friends of the label.

Written at the beginning of 2020 just before the pandemic, the two mixes of ‘Purple Hilt’ feature the same sparkling melodies and glitchy acid line, but the two producers offer a distinct approach on each mix by paying homage to different genres that have influenced their work.

‘Purple Hilt’ will be released as the first single on Scuffed Bits on 14th January 2022.

Almost exactly a year after Tower Block Dreams’ Time Is Now debut and the launch of our white label series, the UK-born, Madrid-based producer returns with a club-ready 5 tracker which fuses together the most danceable facets of UKG, grime and breaks.

The opening track ‘Bare Dubs’ pays tribute to UKG’s antecedents in pirate radio with sporadic MC vocal samples and a womping bassline. The product: a soundsystem banger with a disjointed, yet fiercely controlled two-step rhythm and grimey, extended basslines a la So Solid Crew and early Scratcha. Flip over the record and the A-side’s cold rigour is swapped out for a sultry groove. Euphoric piano stabs and playful R’n’B vocal chops energise ‘If You Want The Reload’ and video-game-esque bleeps lend ‘Last One From Me’ its blissed-out melody. But don’t get too comfortable. The aptly-named ‘From The Top’ sees a return of the opening tracks’ grime sensibilities and introduces an FM static atmospheric to take things back to the old school.

Pure Space Records welcomes a newly emerging Naarm producer, Dividens with his EP ‘Blueprints’. Across four tracks Dividens masterfully guides us through the fringes of modern drum n bass, eerie Dub and restrained Jungle styles.

‘Tell Dem’ rounds out the release with a tasteful amount of dub. Here a mass of swamp-like synths envelop you completely, while the tight break patterns elevate the energy through to the final moments of the release.

Dividens - Tell Dem

West Coast mainstays @dannygoliger and @justin-jay bring a slamming, club-ready collaborative release to Scuffed Recordings on the ‘Sticky Rice’ EP.

Danny and Justin have been releasing music together since 2020, when the two teamed up for a track on their own Fantastic Voyage imprint. Since then, the Los Angeles based artists have collaborated on tracks on Dirtybird and Childsplay, marking them out as a team to be reckoned with.

Alongside their collabs, Danny has appeared as a solo artist on labels like clip.art, art|werk and Moving Castle, while Justin has had a storied career appearing on labels as varied as Time Is Now, Suara, and Pets Recordings along with being a longtime member of the Dirtybird camp.

Now the two join forces on Scuffed Recordings, with a release including two collabs and a solo track from each artist.

From the outset, the duo wears their UK influences on their sleeves, taking in breakbeat grooves, rolling bass, and upfront percussion. Over the course of the two collabs and two solo tracks, Danny and Justin gleefully tear through an array of genres and influences – whether that’s electro, techno, UK garage, breaks, or IDM, they bounce off each other effortlessly to form a concise and impactful club EP.

Back by popular demand is DJ Crisps with his third solo contribution to the Time Is Now catalogue: the fierce 4-tracker which explores the many flavours of garage and justifies the Rotterdam producer’s ever-growing ubiquity in today’s UKG circuit.
 
Kicking off proceedings is ‘Keep It Up’ - a high-octane speed garage banger, prepped with intervals of slamming reverse sweeps which carry their own rhythm. After ‘Alright’’s unique blend of old skool grime samples and diva-esque vocals which play in dialogue beneath a sharp two-step beat, ‘Today’ strips things back a little with a modest bassline melody and ragga vocals. Finally, with pitched-up, syrup smooth vocal licks ‘Bounce’ captures UKG at its most soulful.

Inspiration comes in many forms; the city in which we live, the culture from countries across the globe and our love for TV, film and books.This rings true for FFF as a move from his home of Vlissingen in 98 to Rotterdam, combined with his love for UK sounds and comic books created a unique, outward-looking perspective. The DJ, producer and long term party thrower now turns in a record for Low Battery; so come and see for yourself.

Opening track ‘In Toom’ launches a satellite straight into deep space, picking up transmissions from an unknown source. The track deploys alien electronics and other-worldly vocal snippets, building a curious and ghostly atmosphere. Bass lures heavy around the mid-way point creating an increasing sense of unease, as unidentifiable objects head straight for earth.

The aptly titled ‘Desperately Seeking Summer’ is a giant leap toward the good times ahead. You can sense its energy in the air; the smell of freshly cut grass, the charcoal from a newly lit BBQ and the coastal breeze on a warm summer’s day. Summer is almost here and we could all do with a serotonin boosting elixir.

The B-side opens with ‘Voices’ as candy-floss vocals topped with xtra sugar taste even better with every play; while ascending basslines and frenetic drums join hands to produce that FFF energy we all know and love. ‘Full of Light’ provides tranquility at the end of a wild ride, as shimmering synths shine with radiant bliss with the power to transcend “bathed in light and lifted in what I can only call another dimension.”

Yosh returns with his fourth Time Is Now release. Following the success of UKG-focused 5-tracker, ‘The Warning’ released at the end of last year, Modulate EP sees the London producer put his inimitable spin on breaks, translating into 4 tracks firmly rooted in the genre’s antecedents yet offering something distinctly new.

‘New Dawn’ is a prime example of Yosh’s priceless ability to create something which is at once hard-hitting and soulful with clattering breaks and luscious vocals which float blissfully above them. Next up, ‘Modulate’ adds a thumping 4/4 beat into the equation, creating an assertive march with plenty of swing before ‘Snap Back’ brings the ruffage with a sharp two-step rhythm and fierce bass womps. Finally, it’s up to ‘Track 1’ to close proceedings. A real heater, a syncopated triplet rhythm lends it its driving propulsion - almost resembling the club sounds native to northeastern regions of the US such as Jersey and Baltimore. Thudding assertively beneath the stylistic tropes of UKG, this makes for a truly unique sound and solidifies Yosh’s status as a highly innovative and forward-facing producer..

Welcoming Joe Koshin to the Time Is Now family with a release of two halves. Delirium EP takes us on a whiplash journey through the contemporary iterations of breakbeat hardcore before slowing down the pace and stationing in UKG’s shadier corners.

With previous releases on Planetaria Music and Gimme A Break Records, Joe Koshin has been making some serious waves with his no-prisoner approach to breaks and jungle. Delirium EP sees the London producer continue in this vein with two raucous breakbeat hardcore tracks, and two dark garage tracks which boast the style’s potential to be at once introspective and club-ready. 

‘Chunk’ slams things into action. And if you thought the clattering drum breaks and growling low-ends couldn’t do more to rip open a dancefloor, just wait for the switch-up. Stutters that Sully would be proud of. The title track grounds itself firmly in the genre’s antecedents: breakbeat which is at once gloriously old-skool and fiercely forward-facing. Flip to the B side and it is configurations of dark garage that take to the fore: first adorned with a hypnotic melody that floats above pitched-up vocals (‘T4LK 2 M3’), and later energised by a buoyant swing which implores you to move (‘Spectra Don’).

Toma Kami returns to Livity Sound for a third EP of provocative, experimental club gear. At the helm of his own Man Band label the French producer continues to explore a hybridised style which favours fractured beats, playful samples and occasional psychedelic flourishes.

Compared to the busier sound of previous releases, minimalism informs Toma’s approach on LIVITY053 as he sits his crunchy drums and weighty low-end in a tangibly spacious mix on ‘Amapicante’. Even within a stripped-down context, his unique approach shines through as ‘Later To The Bone’ progressively ramps up in scratched and scuffed sonic interference and ‘Mzecal’ trips over its own fragmented found-sound drum formations.
