This May, Minimal Wave will take an old sound in a new direction entirely, giving Futurisk’s classic ‘Lonely Streets’ a modern shake-up through a remix package from current artists – to be released on MW’s sublabel reserved for new music and old favorites, Cititrax.

Futurisk, an electro-punk group made legendary by their anarchistic records and explosive live shows, mysteriously disappeared from a thriving scene in 1984. With an electric and dynamically layered sound (created with pre-midi instrumentation), the South Florida group left an indelible mark in the crates of disco and minimalist collectors dotted around corners of the world, including LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy (who gave a complimentary wink to Futurisk in 2003 by using ‘Push Me Pull You (Pt. 2)’ on the delightful Colette # 5 DFA Comp CD). Minimal Wave’s own history with Futurisk runs a few years back, starting first by including an unreleased 1982 version of the track ‘Meteoright’ on the label’s ‘Found Tapes’ vinyl LP in 2007. Subsequently, Minimal Wave released the retrospective full-length vinyl ‘Player Piano’ LP to celebrate the band’s 30th anniversary last year, culling material recorded between the years 1980 to 1982, with all of the tracks on their two 7-inch releases mixed in with rare studio recordings and early 4-track tapes.

The Futurisk ‘Lonely Streets Remixes’ includes remixes by four of the band’s biggest fans, each of whom have a sound as iconic as the band themselves: Chris Carter (Throbbing Gristle, Chris & Cosey), Tom Furse (The Horrors), Prince Language (DFA, Editions Disco) and Complexxion from the UK.

This time they went to a professional studio, Ocean Sound in Fort Lauderdale with the intention of releasing an album, which never materialized. This is the version of "Lonely Streets" that came out of those sessions. We are proud to present two classic Minimal Wave tracks which have been on heavy rotation for years now, “Computer Bank” and “Like I Am, Comme Je Suis” remixed by The Floor (Veronica Vasicka & Karl O’Connor).

Five Times Of Dust was formed in Bristol, U.K. in 1981 by Mark Phillips and Rob Lawrence. Mark had answered an advert that Rob had placed in a local record shop and later that year they went on to record and release their first tape, The Dadacomputer. A standout track from that tape, “Computer Bank” is a seminal, “proto-techno banger”. The Floor remixed it a while ago to DJ it out and since then have been receiving many requests about where it could be purchased.
The flip side features Unovidual & Tara Cross’ “Like I Am Comme Je Suis”. It appeared on our first compilation entitled V/A The Lost Tapes LP, in 2006. Unovidual was a Belgian producer involved with the Micrart Group (Autumn, Linear Movement, Twilight Ritual) and Tara Cross, a “long lost girl from Brooklyn” who used to play in small NYC downlown clubs alongside Madonna during the early 1980s when she was still an unknown. Unovidual and Tara collaborated on several tracks through the mail during this time as well as in the studio. “Like I Am Comme Je Suis” was recorded in a studio in Ghent, Belgium in 1985.

We find both of these tracks prime examples of innovative and pioneering synth wave tracks that work on and off the dance floor. And through these mixes, The Floor aim to stay true to the artists’ original intentions whilst making the songs more dance floor oriented.

Featured alongside these remixes, are two unreleased tracks. Rob Lawrence’s “Armoured Car” which at one point was released on a compilation CD as Robert (not to be confused with Rob Doran from Hard Corps) and Unovidual’s “Imponative”, a beautiful minimal synth track which has remained unreleased to this day.

The release represents a complete rethink about what it means to compile and commission music in the streaming era – and the tracks and seductively dark atmospheres conjured as a result are exploring all kinds of new sonic territory, too. In short, the cream of leftfield electronic talent have been given a brief: to take the phrase “in Death's dream kingdom”, or the whole of T.S. Eliot's poem The Hollow Men from which it comes, as inspiration.

The resulting 25 tracks will be released, day by day, together with further artist information, to build into the full work. Not an album in the traditional sense, certainly more than just a playlist, it brings together a seriously diverse array of talents into a coherent whole with a vivid aesthetic reverberating through it. It occupies a similar space to the great home listening electronica acts of the 90s – Future Sound Of London, Global Communication, the Artificial Intelligence axis – but there are no throwbacks here: this is radical in sound and thought. Dark music for dark times.

FUTURISK was a pioneering electro-punk group that recorded and performed in the pre-midi era of the early '80's. They had two vinyl releases that sold out, a legendary live show and some videos, but for a number of reasons by 1984 Futurisk was history. Eventually the main core of Futurisk would be the Kolosine/Hess/Howard line up, but in '79 when a teenage Jeremy Kolosine won studio time & money in a competition with his drum-machine triggered guitar-synth act called 'Clark Humphrey & Futurisk', he decided to form a band around the name to record a more punk release "The Sound of Futurism 1980/Army Now". It was an ambivalent anti-war anthem, with Jack Howard on drums, Frank Lardino on synth and Kolosine on vocals and guitar synth. In '81, Kolosine, who had gotten absorbed in a new synth/sequencer replaced Lardino with synthesist/recordist Richard Hess who had a myriad collection of Moogs, Oberheims and KATs,etc, and the line up for the "Player Piano EP" was cast. The EP, like the live show, was a strange blend of punk/minimalist/disco influenced electro pop, with drum-machine triggered synths and often frantic real drums all led by Kolosine's schizophrenic Bowie/Ferry/Foxx adulations (and about 20 seconds of punk-funk guitar). It was recorded by Rich and the band in the rooms of Ron K's house.The drum sound, gotten in a bathroom, rocks, even today. Reportedly, Futurisk may have been the 1st synth-punk band in the American South...or something, and 1981's track 'Push Me Pull You (pt. 2)' was an early pre-'Rockit' excursion into electro-funk.
In 2003 LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy gave a complimentary wink to Futurisk by using the track on the delightful Colette # 5 DFA Comp CD.
In 2007 an unreleased 1982 version of the track "Meteoright" was included on Minimal Wave's "Found Tapes" vinyl LP.
In 2010 Minimal Wave Records released the long awaited Futurisk 30th Anniversary retrospective full-length vinyl Player Piano LP .
In 2011 Cititrax /Minimal Wave Records released Futurisk - Lonely Streets Remixes with remixed tracks by Chris Carter (Throbbing Gristle,Chris & Cosey), Tom Furse (The Horrors), Prince Language (DFA, Editions Disco) and Complexxion from the UK.
