Following Ruf Dug’s captivating debut album ‘Island’ on Music For Dreams last year, which garnered great reviews and attained success worldwide, the label is releasing a 4 track remix EP entitled ‘Island Remix EP 1’ on Friday 18th March.
 
Featuring inspired remixes from some of the top tracks on the album, it's the first of two remix EPs leading up to the release of Ruf Dug's second album ‘Neu Romancer’ late 2016 on Music For Dreams.
 
Remixes include Peaking Lights’ Disco Dub remix of ‘Speedboat’, ‘Tendacayou’ (2814 Remix), ‘Rasta Beach’ (Al Breadwinner Mix 2), and ‘Dominica!’ (Kenneth Bager Ambient Instrumental Mix).

Ruf Dug recorded ‘Island’ during his 3-month staycation on the island of Guadeloupe in the French Caribbean. Seizing the opportunity to live out his own Compass Point studios fantasy he put together a portable studio that would fit into a suitcase - two half-rack synthesizers, a couple of effects units, a laptop and a 4-track cassette recorder. 

Ruf Dug said "When Kenneth asked me to make the album, he always had the plan that we would get some remixes done of the tracks. From an early point in the album I was thinking about who I'd love to remix the tracks, and this represents the first part of some serious wish fulfillment!”

Peaking Lights are a husband and wife duo from San Francisco whose lo-fi dub and noise pop has led them to be signed to Domino’s Weird World label. Ruf Dug: “Peaking Lights’ music I adore; I had the luck to play with Aaron a while ago and we got on very well. It was a total thrill when he agreed to do the remix; I made 'Speedboat' in part as a tribute to (i.e.rip-off of!)  the PL sound so there is some very nice symmetry to the remix.”

Those who experienced listening to the original Maria Rita version of "Cântico Brasileiro Nº3 (Kamaiurá)" on the dancefloor know it's such a thrilling experience that could only be better if the song was a bit longer. At the same time, it didn't make much sense to mess with the original. Having these thoughts on their minds, the Selvagem boys' Augusto Olivani and Millos Kaiser (the minds behind Selva Discos) had an insight while discussing the reissue of the "Brasileira" material with singer Maria Rita Stumpf: why not hit the studio and remake the track? Also, why not ask someone like Joakim, known for his exquisite taste and brilliant production skills, to remix "Lamento Africano/Rictus"? It would be the perfect package. And that's what happened.

In order to properly remake "Kamaiurá", they recruited Paulo Sergio Santos from Uakti, one of the musicians that took part of the original "Brasileira" recording sessions, a supertalented multi-instrumentist who still possesses a version of the plastic tubes responsible for the particular bass sound of the track and also a couple of flutes reminiscent of the ones first used (not to mention a lot of crazy instruments he brought alongside him; on a side note for those not familiar with Uakti, it was an instrumental music group from Brazil famous for creating their own instruments whose godfather was Milton Nascimento and peaked in the 1990's playing with Philip Glass). Carlos Gualda aka Carrot Green, who's been collaborating with Selvagem for the past 3 years, was also summoned for the mission.

The project of remaking "Kamaiurá" also needed a proper recording studio, so Augusto and Millos pulled a couple of strings to rent the legendary Vice-Versa studio in São Paulo (now owned by the Brazilian label Trama), which was founded by Rogério Duprat (yes, the Tropicalia maestro), Luiz Arruda Botelho, Sá & Guarabyra in the early 1970's – a beautiful, spacious acoustically-treated wooden room fully equipped and controlled by a Neve console. There, Paulo Sergio Santos recorded 12 different instruments (none of them electric or electronic) and Maria Rita Stumpf sang in a studio after more than 20 years, on a different arrangement than the original, with a new intro and an outro, also extending the song (including a breakdow) for a better dancefloor experience. Later, Selvagem & Carrot Green worked on the post-production, adding a kick drum, a hi-hat and some Rolando SH-101 punctuation, all very minimal, so the feeling of a jungle excursion of the new session would be preserved. 

Concerning the "Lamento Africano/Rictus" remix, it's a great feeling when you present your first choice an idea and the person is just hooked by the power of the music. Joakim was just very interested about the singer, the instruments used, the lyrics and jumped aboard this project quickly. He didn't had the same opportunity as Selvagem & Carrot Green had, being offered to work with just the original song, but did an amazing job inverting the elements of this suite, using the kalimba-sounding instrument in the introduction and the African lyrics in the breakdown, turning this subtle, sensitive chant in a dancefloor monster.

Four slow-burning bombs that perfectly encapsulate how far that Slow Motion, slo-mo sound can be stretched. Featuring artists old as Alien Alien (Rodion & Hugo Sanchez) and Lerosa and new as Stoned Immaculate (Leo Mas & Fabrice and Max Essa) and Kassiel, Slow Motion drop the energy down a notch or two but not the emotion. Just as suitable for an early morning run as they are for a Balearic sunset, this four tracker has got essential written all over it.

After a year’s hiatus Optimo Music Disco Plates returns with the first of several planned releases.

First up is long time friend Phil Kieran with an EP made specifically with Optimo in mind. It has been tried and tested over recent months and more than ticks all our boxes. We feel confident it will tick yours too.

Phil says  “The Ep was recorded in my house and made up of mostly live percussion performed live by Thomas Tettey Annang. Originally from Ghana, he moved to Belfast some years ago. 

It just so happens his wife is a close friend of my sisters and that was the first introduction.  Thomas now runs "Releasing Rhythms” here in Belfast teaching drum classes. 

We used a wide selection of traditional African drums that all have their own name, each one has a style and a sound.  The rhythms used in this record would stem back to South American rhythms but using African drums.  This was a sound and rhythm that influenced early post punk records in New York and still has an influence on dance music today.”

On an unassuming cassette, just labelled ‘Robert Rental’ in green Dymo tape, these demos have lain unheard for years amongst his family’s treasured possessions, cared-for artefacts of a life cut short far too soon.

These songs, which Robert recorded in his council flat in Battersea in 1980, provide an enticing glimpse into his all-too-infrequent solo work. On most occasions, Robert worked with Thomas Leer, Daniel Miller or other collaborators. These are rough recordings, tape hiss still in evidence, but his creativity shines through the murk, like uncut diamonds.

With these recordings Robert appears to be moving towards more recognisable song structures than most of his earlier work, which could be wildly experimental and would often involve found recordings taped directly off television.

We know 2 of these tracks from their later re-recording for the Mute Records single ‘Double Heart’ late in 1980. Robert spoke to friends of his frustration at being unable to replicate his sound in a commercial studio – it was these demos’ sound that he wanted to recreate. Sometimes having only access to the most rudimentary of equipment can hone the creative talent into something sharper and more focused – necessity is the mother of invention, indeed.

I am humbled and ecstatic to be entrusted with this music and able to aid getting these songs out into the world. I have now listened to them countless times and feel they are so, so much more than just an interesting archival release, but rather a small, fully formed body of wondrous songs that deserve to be heard and enjoyed by as many people as possible. In this current era where so much music is so completely focussed on the production, with the result that often the soul is sucked out of it, it’s a pleasant shock to discover that a forgotten tape from nearly 40 years ago can be the freshest and most refreshing sounding thing ever.

Following their album 'Murmurations', Jas Shaw of Simian Mobile Disco has remixed all 12 tracks off the LP for the 'Re-Murmurations' release. Today we hear the first listen of the first mix of 'Caught In A Wave' off the album, one of the first releases from Shaw after he was diagnosed with AL amyloidosis, a rare and serious condition that affects blood cells in the bone marrow (http://www.amyloidosis.org.uk). British talent Kirk Degiorgio gives new life to material produced under his As One alias with his 'Sphere' EP landing on Garage Hermétique that delivers a collection of lost classics on vinyl for the first time.

The cries of tropical birds could be heard from the rooftop of leaves which hung overhead whilst the hustle and movement down on the forest floor was enchanting and busy. In the distance there was the sound of water, it cascaded from a tall waterfall in the midst of the jungle...

MINIMALAFRIKA are set to release a new EP on E-Beamz and blimey is it a good one. Beautiful percussion workouts with abstract sensibilities and freedom.
