Hercules & Love Affair: Music to... make you wanna work it

When Talisman finished recording their latest album “I-Surrection”, as an addition to the David Hill produced finished release, we decided to give the unmixed master recordings to Dave 'Oldwah' Sandford and see what his take would be. Oldwah has previously worked with us, mixing the Vibes album “Reminisce” and was also the man given the job of mixing the unfinished tracks on the soon to be released Capital Letters archive album “Reality”. With 40 years experience as a performing musician and an even longer standing love of reggae, he brings his own unique perspective to the task.
        Having talked to the band and hitting it off with fellow bassie Dennison Joseph, Oldwah was keen to produce something that bore his stamp but also pleased the band members. He describes his take on the music as “a piece of vinyl from 1978 taken out of a dusty sleeve”, not slick and clean but having that authentic vibe.
       Influenced by the classic dub sounds of albums like “African Dub Chapter 3” and “King Tubby Meets the Rockers Uptown”, Oldwah's dubs take you on a journey and as a musician he focuses in on instruments sometimes blending them together to great effect. This is brand new music and yet it absolutely sounds like it was recorded and mixed in downtown Kingston circa 1978.
       What Oldwah has given us is an anachronism, a classic seventies dub album recorded and mixed three and a half decades and four and a half thousand miles away from its spiritual home. An album that just grows on you and rewards every new listen revealing a little more each time, no gimmicks or crazy effects, just a producer with an understanding and appreciation for the tracks. If you think you know the “I-Surrection” album then think again, the Oldwah Deconstruction is a remix in the true sense. He may have used the same ingredients, but he's cooked up an entirely different dish. If you loved David Hill's main course you really need to sample Oldwah's dessert with its extra large vintage dub topping and entirely different flavours.
       As a bonus, for this release we've included some fresh tracks from the band, extra tracks from the “I-Surrection” sessions also given the Oldwah treatment making ten different songs plus two additional mixes, a round dozen dub shots for  Talisman fans old and new. Talisman's “I-Surrection (Oldwah Deconstruction)” will be released as a digital download by Sugar Shack Records on 3rd February 2014 and will be available from all leading download sites.

      Originally formed in 1980, Pigbag burst into the charts and the public consciousness with their first single, “Papa's Got A New Pigbag”, a track that retains its dance floor appeal to this day.  The band toured extensively in Europe, Japan and the United States, released two albums, appeared on 'Top of the Pops' twice and built a loyal fan base before they split in 1983 due to musical differences.
    Pigbag were part of the first flowering of the Bristol music scene when the City's musicians were creating their own unique synthesis of styles and finally being noticed by those outside the City. Perhaps if things had worked out differently Pigbag would have stayed together longer continuing to evolve musically and achieving more of the success they deserved. Now they have a second chance.
      Thirty years after they split up, Sugar Shack Records are extremely pleased to announce that not only are Pigbag back with founding members Chris Lee and Ollie Moore as well as original member Kofi Adu, but they have recorded an album of brand new material entitled “Year of the Pigbag”.
       Having spent the intervening years playing with groups as diverse as the Pogues, Abyssinians, Neneh Cherry, Osibisa and Mulato Astatke, the trio of original members were inspired by the re-release of their back catalogue to reform and recruit five new and very talented musicians who shared their vision of fusing African grooves, jazz, latin, funk and dance beats into a heady new cocktail to invigorate the 2010s just as they did the 1980s.
      With the classic eight piece line-up and full brass section, just as when they started in Bristol, the band's new material is a joyous fusion of propulsive basslines, catchy horns and irresistible percussion all seamlessly blended into a heady mix that finds your feet tapping along as the urge to dance takes over. I can't wait to see the band live as this CD is a nonstop dance party of the highest order with echoes of the JBs, Fela Kuti and Sun Ra's Arkestra yet entirely different and their own unique creation, with music this catchy perhaps 2013 will be the year of Pigbag.

‘Sound History Volume One’

For our first venture into reggae, Sugar Shack have teamed up with a new group, AMJ Dub Collective. The group's name may be new to people, but their part in Bristol's musical heritage goes back more than thirty years. Mark Spence and Andy Clarke, the band's rhythm section are graduates of Zion Band from which they progressed to legendary Bristol band Restriction, (music from both bands can be found on our sister label Bristol Archive Records). The third member of the trio is producer John Hollis, another Restriction graduate and for their first release they've called on two other former band mates Eric 'The General' McCarthy on MC duties and Bristol legend Rob Smith for a brace of mixes.
       The trio's aim was to recreate the classic reggae sound that they grew up with, yet they aren't afraid to bring things up to date where appropriate as well as bringing in some guest musicians for an added Latin twist that harks back to Jamaican music's origins and close links with Cuba and the wider Caribbean.
       The idea for these tracks came from Mark Spence who felt it was long overdue to document in song the City's rich heritage of sound systems, their selectors, MCs and the posses who supported them, a tribute to the reggae scene that nurtured and inspired the members of AMJ Dub Collective as well as countless others over the decades.
       The choice of 'The General' on microphone duties was obvious as not only had he taken that role in Restriction, but was also an MC on legendary Bristol sound system Enterprise. His delivery has lost nothing in the last thirty years and it's great to be able to hear him again.
       Rob Smith needs no introduction and although his career has covered the “Bristol Sound”, drum and bass and dub step, he has never drifted far from his reggae roots, having been a founder member of both Zion Band and Restriction, it's only natural that his mixing talents were called upon and he certainly delivers. 
       This is reggae for the twenty first century, yet reggae built on years of practice and skill, music played on real instruments by real musicians and not something programmed on a PC using the same tired digital effects, “Sound History” will be released as a limited edition 4 track 12” EP complete with picture sleeve, if only all new reggae was made with such care and attention.

 Shoc Wave Records was the brainchild of Dominican immigrant Gene Walsh, Fitz Watson and Melford Gardener. From the late 1970s through to the 1990s, Shoc Wave provided the only label willing to put out records by the majority of the City's reggae and soul acts ignored by bigger and more mainstream labels and too small to finance their own releases.
       Fortunately for Bristol's musical heritage, Gene Walsh kept an open mind when it came to what music his label should release and so over the course of the label he released roots reggae, dub reggae, dancehall, lovers rock, soca, disco, soul and pop, Gene and the team’s vision encompassed it all.
       Without Gene Walsh and Shoc Wave many artists would never have got the chance to record in a proper studio and their music would have been lost and forgotten. Many of Bristol Archive Records previous albums would have been all the poorer without being able to draw on Gene's catalogue and so it is only fitting, that Bristol Archive Records celebrate Bristol's pioneering black music label with the release of our latest compilation, “Shoc Wave – A Bristol Story”.
        This new compilation attempts to tell the story of the label and reflect the diversity of musical styles it embraced. The 19 tracks range from its first release from 1979 with Gene's own “Independence Fever” right up until the label's last single with Haswell's “Prissy Miss Maybe”. This compilation paints a picture of the musical developments in the City and the wider world as styles evolved or fell out of fashion.
         Artists such as Joshua Moses, Sharon Bengamin, Bunny Marrett and Buggs Durrant will be familiar to those who follow Bristol Archive's releases. Many others are new to us with The Rimshots, No Deposit, Nite Watch, Sweet Energy, Felix The Cat, Second City Sounds and Haswell helping to illustrate other aspects of the city's music scene during the 1980s and beyond.
         Released on 15th April 2013, “Shoc Wave – A Bristol Story” is available on CD and digital download from all good outlets, the CD comes with a booklet telling the history of Shoc Wave Records illustrated with archive images.

Asmus Tietchens is one of the best known German artists in the field of abstract music. His early works though are finest avant-garde synthesizer pop. "Biotop" from 1981 was Tietchens' first release on the German label Sky Records (Cluster, Michael Rother etc.). It is inhabited by insectoid squeaks, banging percussion and echoes of displaced nursery rhymes. These blaring, crashing tracks glare with artifice, mirroring the ideas of an artist lacking the inclination and capacity to compose straightforward easy listening music. Udo Hanten and Albin Meskes, the Krefeld duo collectively known as YOU, played their way into the elite of the German electronic music scene with their first two albums “Electric Day” (1979) and “Time Code” (1983). The music on "Laserscape" (1985) was conceived to accompany the laser performances of the same name by Horst H. Baumann. And that’s what it sounds like: multilayered drones, up to 13 minutes long, evocative of Blade Runner’s menacing atmosphere, sometimes laced with driving, pulsating sequences, typical of the so-called Berlin School (Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze etc). Thomas Dinger was Klaus Dinger’s younger brother. He was a member of the legendary Krautrock band La Düsseldorf and also worked on the third NEU! album. In 1982 he released his only solo album, imbued with the spirit of La Düsseldorf, yet more measured and melancholic, redolent of the music of Wolfgang Riechmann or Michael Rother. Thomas Dinger died in 2002. He was just 49 years of age. Out August 3, 2013 on CD / LP (180g) / DL

ROEDELIUS SCHNEIDER - TIDEN (release date: June 28th 2013)

Not long after Hans-Joachim Roedelius (Cluster, Harmonia) and Stefan Schneider (To Rococo Rot, Kreidler, Mapstation) had released their first album "Stunden", accompanied by a few live shows in 2011, Eric Satie and Brian Eno were quoted as the great inspiration for their musical collaboration. Fine references no doubt, one having invented musique d'ameublement, and the other having refined it into ambient music 80 years later. Yet "Tiden" does not sit easily in either camp. This is neither tasteful decor (à la Satie), nor is it electronic-auditory space filler (à la Eno), gazing towards infinity. The short duration of the 13 pieces is enough to discount either genre. Better to consider these as concentrated, inspired études, carefully thought through and in no way random or sketchy.

With cheerful gravitas, the two artists create absolute music – music which desires only to be itself, without ulterior effects and with the declared intent of involving the listener in his emotional, inventive game. Perhaps Franz Schubert's moments musicaux would be a more suitable citation. The lightness and atmospheric intimacy of this music reveal Roedelius (grand piano, synthesizer) and the decades younger Schneider (Elektronik) as musicians who understand how to listen to one another and improvise on each other's ideas immediately. The result is a lively, relentless interplay of great composure, more surprising than any tide could be, as precise calendars exist for tidal flows.

Roedelius can already look back on a adventuresome career in music. Schneider has also prospered through exciting decades in contemporary pop. This is the second time their paths have crossed. "Tiden" keeps the promise which their first album made, genial contemporary music from two artists who are as one in heart and soul. And when Roedelius steps on the pedal of his grand piano, well it squeaks a little. (Asmus Tietchens)


About the musicians:

The electronic pioneer Hans-Joachim Roedelius lives in Baden near Wien (Austria) and is a legendary figure in popular music. He founded the seminal bands Cluster and Harmonia, which also included Dieter Moebius and Michael Rother. He produced the albums "Zuckerzeit" (1974) and "Deluxe" (1975), which are considered blueprints for today's electronica and were recently successfully reissued. And in the late 70s he worked with the great Brian Eno – the albums "Cluster & Eno" (1977), "After The Heat" (1978) and "Tracks & Traces" (1997) document the cooperation between the Bowie and U2 producer and the sound researcher who was then living in a creative commune in Forst.

Roedelius began releasing solo albums in 1978. He was already exploring the interplay between piano and electronics on his second LP, "Jardin au Fou" (1979). This synthesis is also the core of "Stunden". The Düsseldorf based Stefan Schneider was a founding member of Kreidler (1994â€“99) and is part of the trio To Rococo Rot. He has released several albums under the name Mapstation.
