Ecstatic Dance

Made a quick tapestry of tracks ~ just patching them together roughly ~ no perfect mixes between tracks ~ mostly just wanted to make a little journey to share with friends ~ some fun new tracks I've been playing with ~ did something creative by running up the mix from 90bpm, sorta downtempo tech, right up through mid tempo, into the more typical organic deep house we play, and then beyond into some more bouncy minimal house towards the end ~ even threw in some of that 'melodic house' that's kinda driving and trance like ~ enjoy !

Weaving styles, as we do ~ bass, global rhythms, ukg, tech-house ~ shakin' it up as we witness the passing of the seasons ~ 6 weeks beyond solstice ~ the light slowly returns and the new year starts to unfold in earnest ~ still in the thick of winter, but we make the most of it ~ sweet time for a gathering ~ thick snow, light shows, ice carving, barbecues, sauna, fire spinning, drum circles, dance ~ the house is activated in all the right ways ~ good friends, old and new ~ birthdays to celebrate; Paz, Catherine, Cam, Clarity, Lisa Kristine, Sairah ~ bless you all and another round around the sun ~ thanks to all the fabulous folks that came out to make this possible ~ feeling blessed

Played this set at the Cosmic Maple house in Kitchener, Ontario on September 15th. It's that mid-tempo folkloric electronic style, with much inspiration coming from Latin America, although there's songs from elsewhere too. Meso means "middle" in Greek, and Meso-America is another term to describe Central America, but in all honesty these songs are from all over Latin America, and beyond. Still, I chose to call it "Meso-America in Midtempo" cause I love alliteration, and meso fits with the whole midtempo theme. I started this set out at 75bpm and brought it up to 103 bpm. Resting mostly around 100bpm. I like that tempo a lot. Some sweet tracks in here. Enjoy!

Dew Drop ~ Conscious Reggae Music ~ Bazurto Social Club, Cartegena, Colombia 12.20.17

This is another mix of what I'm calling "mid-tempo folkloric electronic". In this mix I leaned even more heavily on tracks that have incorporated sounds from Latin America and I chose to keep it a touch slower and more roots-like and organic sounding. Tempo is of course all relative, but I'd say this is actually boarder line between mid-tempo and downtempo. Except for the last track which I couldn't resist but include, just barely crossing the 100bpm threshhold, and most certainly in that mid-tempo rainge.

Electribal (https://soundcloud.com/gabriel-soma) wrote a nice description of one of their mixes which is of a similar style. Let me paraphrase: "This mix is a tribute to artists who have have shown a serious commitment to rescue lost sound files and bring them back to light using electronic music as a medium, without altering them too much and without sacrificing the purity of the bass. This mixtape is a tribute to the true anthropologists of music, a journey to the root of the deep electribal sound."

Brazilian reggae music ~ mostly Natiruts and Ponto de Equilibrio ~ An "R" is pronounced like we pronounce an "H" in English, so in Brazil it's called "heggae music" or "hoots hock heggae" ~ Hespect! Gratidão!

Edging its way into the realm of techno. Something a bit more driving than the deep house I'm often drawn to. Always appreciating depth and beauty. Melodic and hypnotic, but rich and driven. Less emphasis on the off-beat high hats. Of course there's a range of tracks in here, some of them funky and weird, some of them psychedelic or dubby, some of them deep and minimal, and some of them are actually somewhat deep-house like. There's a couple tracks towards the end I'd definitely call tech-house. Right near the end there's a couple dub-techno tracks. And there's a totally different track there to finish it off. I just like nomenclature, playing with words, diversity, and depth, so I'm playfully trying to describe this sub-genre. I guess there's not tons of world music sounds in here, but just enough I thought it fair to call it "ethno techno". Mostly I just like that it kinda rhymes. Maybe if I could call it anything I wanted I'd call it "Deep and Downright Delicious Psychedelic Ethno Techno"

It's not exactly folk, not exactly acoustic, not exactly rock. I suppose it's a combination of all these genres. North American music with guitars and drums and the like. Relative to all this music from other countries, it just seems like good old music from home, but then again, it's not the type of music you'd hear on the radio much. I guess where the "indie" part comes in. Though some of these artists have certainly become popular. Like always, an ecclectic mix.

Dew Drop ~ African Music Mix Vol. 3

This is a mix of what I'm calling Brazilian devotional music. The vast majority of the country is Catholic, but the Christian faith is often fused with a deep nature awareness. It's hard to generalize a country as large and diverse as Brazil, but certainly the nature here is quite strong and I feel like much of the population is proud of that. The songs on this mix are sung by a sub-culture of people who spend a lot of time in nature and have cultivated a strong sense of connection with the earth. Many of these songs are sung in a mantra like way, like devotional hymns, often singing praises to nature, sometimes specifically evoking a nature spirit, or Orisha, like Yemanja, Oshun, or Nana. These names have come from African religions like Yoruba. A really interesting fusion has come about between African, indigenous, and Christian faith. Brazil is an incredibly diverse place and a rich culture. I hope I was able to convey just a small but special part of it.

This set was recorded on Christmas Day somewhere up a small tributary of the Amazon river in what initially seemed liked the middle of nowhere, but in fact, as I later realized, was actually the center of the entire universe. Dew Drop ~ Canções Do Coração ~ Brazilian Songs Of Prayer Vol. 2

A collection of healing songs of prayer from Latin America, with much inspiration coming from Peru. Of course there's a fusion happening here, with much cultural cross-over between the Andes and Amazonian regions, and influences from beyond, such as Europe and North America. Indigenous music has long incorporated certain instruments from elsewhere like guitars, but now we sometimes even find African drums and Indian sitars. The healing plant medicine traditions of the Amazonian region have become blended with the Andean world view with Pachamama and their mountain deities, melded with Christianity, and now even with influences coming from Eastern Yogic philosophy and mantra style songs of prayer. Most of these songs are being sung in Spanish, with a splash of indigenous languages such as Quechua or Yawanawa. Another African music mix ~ while I've been diving deeper into my collection ~ digging up some gems ~ old CDs from my parent's house that I grew up listening to ~ Oliver Mtukudzi, Thomas Mapfumo, Oumou Sangaré, Ayub Ogada, Ali Farka Touré ~ these mixes have included music from all parts of Africa, with my personal preferences playing their part of course, leaning a bit heavy on West Africa and Zimbabwe ~ trying to stay objective through it all ~ African Music mixes 4 and 5 have included some more obscure songs for my own interest, and a couple with less than ideal recordings just cause I love them so much ~ I'd say African Music mixes 2 and 3 are my best selections, but I'm sure they'll all be appreciated in the end ~ sorry for not having brought any other styles forward for a couple months, I'll get back into some folkloric electronic and bass music mixes soon ~ for now, let's appreciate some deep African roots music, the heartland and home of ancient rhythm ~

Dew Drop ~ Medicine Songs From Around the World Vol. 6

Similar to my typical deep house mixes, but even more dreamy, melodic and atmospheric. This sub-style definitely has a depth to it, but it's beautiful and light as well. The bass is deep and almost dub like at times. It bridges house and techno, like a chilled-out tech-house. Tempo is up there around 120 for most of the time, and yet it's something you might relax to. I've let the tracks play out longer than I normally do, sometimes allowing them to play for 6 or 7 minutes, and the mix is longer than usual too, almost 3 hrs long. Dew Drop ~ Dreamy and Delicate, yet Dashing and Delectable Deep House ~ Extended Mix

A rich and deep sub-style of tech-house with lots of inspiration from cultures across the globe. These tunes have a bit more of a driving rhythm than the some of the softer atmospheric deep house I like to play. Almost something trance like or progressive about them, reminiscent of a train ride deep into the night in a foreign land, which is exactly where I dreamed up this mix. These tracks remind me of that deep mid-tempo folkloric electronic style that I'm fond of, but faster pace, around 122 bpm. Whatever it's called, it sure makes me move. WooooOOooooOOOOooot wooOoOooot !
