Hailing from Toulouse, French trio Signs have already carved themselves out an interesting niche within the nu-skool neuro scene, stamping their unique output into the public’s consciousness with big releases on Red Light Records, Bad Taste Recordings, C4C Recordings, and RAM Records

Their beats are sparse and militant with each drum hit afforded the space to dominate the audio spectrum, with pauses and moments of silence, delicately programmed into the DNA of the drum tracks, playing big part in the groove’s forward momentum, propelling the riddims forward and creating a dynamically powerful and compelling backbone for the rugged, tough basslines to shine.

The tunes are punctuated with wild Reese fluctuations and sci-fi sound effects reminiscent of the Wormhole-esq techstep from the end of the last century, with dark atmospherics ushering each trackdown the rabbit hole and into the dank, hellishbasements of debauchery that tunes like these call home.

TECH 130 – Gradual – Beware feat. Coppa / Swamp

As drum and bass made deeper inroads into the sunlit land of daytime radio and mainstream acceptance in 2015, the underground scene was defined by the dark and technical sound of neurofunk. And repping that style for Technique are one of their most recent signings, the Spanish production team made up of veterans Alerstorm and Ice Stereo, a team now known as Gradual.

“Beware” asserts its personality right from the intro, demonstrating that Gradual aren't shy of adding a little funk to their neuro. The mighty mic man Coppa rolls through to lay out the groove, delivering a scheme that gives that James Brown-style accent to the first beat of the bar. Even amidst the swirl of dark atmospherics, the urge to get your head nodding is irresistible. Then the heavy grind of the bass that sweeps in from the drop takes the heat up to the next level. It's precision-engineered music that expertly balances production science with dancefloor drive.

Then “Swamp” does things a little differently. Opening with high strings and a hint of approaching drums, Gradual draw us into a light cloud of chill-out ambience. This is savagely punctured by a blade of low-end, signalling the approach of something far more dangerous. That something is a stompingly percussive pattern of drums and bass, but that's just the beginning as the beat switches up and builds even further. And this tune keeps going from there, melding and interweaving layers of drums and bassline to keep that rave engaged right to the end.

If you haven't caught up with Gradual's movements yet, this is where to get on board. This release shows just a few of the facets that these guys can bring to their sound. Along with the cold scientific studio skills, they've got a raw funky rhythmic sensibility, adding up to a clear understanding of how to keep raves electrified. They've got a lot more to show off, so better pay attention.

Volatile Cycle, a name that is becoming firmly cemented into the upper echelons of cutting edge drum and bass is taking the scene by storm with their take on the darker end of the drum and bass spectrum. Consisting of 2 members, Dan Lawrence and James Chick, they began experimenting individually with genres such as garage and glitch hop and eventually found their niche in drum and bass. Building up their rep with a slew of releases on a number of reputable drum and bass outputs, they have worked 
their way up through the ranks to finally drop their debut LP on the seminal and beloved label Renegade Hardware. The Reaktiv LP is a masterclass in drum and music, showcasing their highly refined technical ability, yet still retaining the classic style reminiscent of the early Hardware days. Opening track ‘Wrench’ sets the tone, cutting through with razor sharp precision, whilst ‘Reckless’ and ‘Obey’ dominate the dancefloor with pulsating sub frequencies and rattling percussions. Newcomer to the scene Yen joins forces to unleash sinister undertones with ‘Forgotten Future’, whilst Russian neurofunk whizz Cod3x teams up with the duo to kill the dance with ‘Bounce. Nuklear MC puts his lyrical stamp on the track ‘Status’, a stripped back roller designed to cause maximum dancefloor damage. The Reaktiv LP is a huge milestone for Volatile Cycle. Showcasing their production chops, yet demonstrating an impressive degree of 
versatility. Volatile Cycle are set to officially make their mark and rise up to contend with the household drum and bass names. 2016 is their year and they will be taking no prisoners. The year is 2016. The year is Volatile Cycle.
