Hailing from Mexico she's a specialist in global electronic bass and came to our attention via superb DJ mixes for Etoro and Kumbale. Her own productions fuse worldly folk rhythms, with deep bass and a percussive emphasis with releases on Folcore and Footwork / Juke label Ten Toes Turbo. This mix expertly weaves downtempo electronic grooves with Afro-Latin & Tropical rhythms into an epic journey from Cuba to Brazil to Cabo Verde and way beyond!

GUEST MIX #42: SANDUNGA

This week on Island Time brings back another offering from @AnalogDakarClub , a collective of DJ's passionate about analogue African popular music - vinyl records and tapes - which has been organizing parties in the Senegalese capital for two years.

The mix is a journey from the West Indies to West Africa, back and forth, A mix of rhythms and cultures where it's hard to say who inspired who. The African influences in the West Indies music is obvious but we also found a lot of Caribbean patterns inspired songs all over West African artists. And we added some rare and outstanding 7" just dug.

In this 136-minute voyage, we canter around the Tropics to soak in a healthy dose of esoteric gyrations deeply rooted in canonical African rhythms.

 Dundunbanza is an “evil” Congolese spirit which has been defied for centuries by the followers of the Palo Monte religion that gained prominence in Cuba. And while “bad” spirits in African traditions are not always evil per se (an imperialist concept imposed through colonization and Christianity), they are in fact often seen as a metaphysical vessel for one’s intentions and worthiness. That being said, the song “Dundunbanza” (n° 13 in the mix) by Arsenio Rodriguez - one of the originators of Cuban Son Montuno – is in fact calling out a certain malevolent spiritual presence! If this spirit has been reincarnated today in the form of a severe acute respiratory syndrome known as SARS-CoV-2 to agonise our lives, then by the power of Arsenio’s mambo may this spirit twist and turn to his demise!

 While the tracks selected for this mix aren’t all necessarily related to African religions, they pay homage to the vibrant African heritage that they draw inspiration from. The spirit of the mix is that the power of joyful melancholy and minor scales over pure rhythmic hypnosis, can transcend a listener or dancer to a state of elation.

Non-stop vintage Latin and Tropical rarities from across the Atlantic and other (sub)tropical regions recorded from original LPs, 45s and old shellacs found by Fred from Souma records, as a guest mix for the Turning Point Sessions friends in Toronto.

History of the Garifuna:    From 1500s to the 1700s, Shipwrecked africans mixed with indigenous Arawaks / Caribs ( Kalingo ) on the islands of Yurumei (Saint Vincent) and Dominica to create a hybrid race of people called the Garinagu (Plural for Garifuna )

Around the late 1700s, after more than 20 plus years of battling with French and British colonizers for land on the islands, the Garinagu were exiled to the island of Baliceaux then to the island Roatan off the coast of Honduras by the British at the end of intercolonial "Seven Years" War and First / Second Carib Wars.
 
Given the harsh conditions on the isle of Roatan, the Garinagu migrated to the caribbean coast of Central America namely Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, Nicaragua with their african and indigenous musical heritage, customs, and culture still intact.

The main two genres of Garinagu music from the 40s -70s  were Punta and guitar based Parranda unitl the punta was electrified and combined with calypso and soca elements to create a new sound Punta Rock. 

In the late 70s and early 80s, the Garinagu migrated further north to the USA and settled in states like New York, Florida, New Orleans, Texas, and California.

In the early 80s. the first bands in the USA started local "tropical" parties catering to a wide audience of people all backgrounds. They played their afro based punta, parranda, and punta rock while adding salsa, merengue, calypso, kompa, soca, reggae,  dub songs to their repetoire.
