The music industry can be a dangerous place for an artistic mind. Sometimes, fan expectations, financial problems and press criticism can lead a creative soul into despair and depression. Rumor has it that Jonas Kiesekoms and Maarten Elen, better known as “Mumbai Science”, went through dark times, not being able to write music for some time. A close friend from the duo claims that: “After the success of their Impact EP, things went bad for them. The fame took its toll. Jonas took off to join a Sri Lankan Buddhist clergy to meditate – although we believe he was just hiding at his mum’s place – and Maarten started watching the complete Star Trek series.”

For true artists, it are times like these that shake them out of their comfort zone, open their mind and push their art to the next level. For Elen and Kiesekoms though, it took a hard-handed intervention by the label bosses to get to work again. Elen: “Well, they basically made us read the contract, which says that we owe them our first-born daughter and a lifelong supply of Belgian beers if we wouldn’t make this EP. A standard clause in Belgian law, but we really had no clue”.

Flash forward to today. Mumbai Science presents their latest work, the ‘1975 EP’. Two no-nonsense club-tracks, inspired by dirty warehouse techno but cheerfully colored with weird glitchy synths and catchy vocal snippets. The title track ‘1975’ features a deep male voice carelessly asking the crowd “So, What do you wanna do”. The answer is self-evident: "Party all night long and forget about our boyfriends!"

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But not when we’re talking about supermodels. The second track, ‘Models’, follows the same recipe as ‘1975’: overdriven warehouse techno extravagance with the lyrics paying tribute to Mumbai Science’s favorite… models. Some will say it’s a blatant rip-off of Teachers from Daft Punk, others will call it a homage. But does Mumbai science even care? Kiesekoms explains: “I don’t know man, we just made this track on one of those drunk afternoons. Is it getting released? Really? Well, I just hope we won’t get beat up by the French mafia again.”
