Episode 5: Representation and Identity

This podcast is part of "Here I Am" --the Allard Pierson’s newest, upcoming exhibit. Created by the graduate students of the University of Amsterdam’s Museums and Heritage Program, this exhibit is meant to welcome the newest acquisition in the museum’s archaeological collection: The Shabti of Senkamanisken.

This intriguing object is a funerary figurine from ancient Nubia, found in present-day Sudan. It was found in the grave of King Senkamanisken, a Kushite king who ruled from 640-620 BC. It was acquired by the Allard Pierson Museum from British auctioneers, Christie’s, in July 2021. 

The exhibit we have been working on is an exploration of the ways in which value is created and transformed throughout time and space. In this podcast, we will follow the Shabti of Senkamanisken in its journey from the king’s tomb in Nuri to its new display at the Allard Pierson. All conversations are based on research essays written by the Museums Studies students as part of our course, “Museums and the Mobility of Artefacts,” coordinated by Dr. Mirjam Hoijtink.  

Follow us in the month of February as we converse with archaeologists, historians, and community members about the Shabti of Senkamanisken and the creation of meaning in and out of museum spaces.
