Nikoli Sessions # 7 - Spring 2021

Sarajevo, Bosnia based DJ and producer Ahmed Talovic aka A Skitzo debuts his first Canadian release on the Music.Art.Ppl imprint. The label and collective have been big supporters of A Skitzo's releases and are honoured to add this beautiful EP to their growing catalog of music. 

A Skitzo has the rare ability to transmit deep and emotive sonics with his productions. Forgotten Story EP is no exception to this simple fact. This release features 3 tracks, all of which stand out on their own while also working together as a perfect unit to complete this EP. It's hard to put A Skitzo's style in a box but this release lends itself to the deep/organic house sounds under the electronic music umbrella.

This weeks topic is: Creativity And Mental Illness: Do Artists Suffer More?
From Beethoven to Lady Gaga history is full of examples of artists with mental illness. However research on the link between creativity and mental illness didn't start until the 1970s.

This topic is perfect grounds for a creative debate because while some evidence suggests artists do suffer more from mental illness, other think linking it to creativity does more harm than good.

What do you think? Are you a creative person with a mental illness, like depression or bipolar disorder? What have you noticed, and would are you okay with making the connection? Share the in comments below and #jointheconversation​.

Hailing from Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic, LUK FOLLIN is no stranger to the DJ Booth. The Producer and DJ, has been transmitting his vibes to the dance-floor since the early 2000's. His unique and energetic DJ sets can range from the finest in Deep House, all the up to the most sophisticated in Techno.

For the past two decades, Luk Follin has managed to build a global network and is largely responsible for the development of House Music and Techno culture in his native of the Dominican Republic.

He has hosted and played alongside several of the most relevant names in the industry such as; Dennis Ferrer, Marco Carola, Sonny Fodera, Kevin Yost, D-Formation, Fancy Inc and many, many others.

Luk has produced and released original tracks and remixes on labels like, “Lapsus Music” and “Deeplomatic Recordings” and there are no signs of this young producer / DJ slowing down anytime soon.

On part 2 of Mapped Out Radio, Nick has a deep dive interview / conversation with Artist / Musician, Tariq Amery .

Tariq Amery, originally from London, Ontario, is presently based in Montreal. He is a graduate from the Bachelor of Music program at Carleton University, Ottawa and has been playing flute since he was six and saxophone since he was fourteen. He has studied performance and composition extensively with private teachers specializing in styles ranging from the Suzuki flute method, to twelve tone composition. He has also studied with internationally renowned guitarist and composer Roddy Elias, Robert Cram of the National Arts Centre orchestra, Juno award winner Jesse Stewart, Humber Colleges’ Jeff King and Ottawa local sax guru Mike Tremblay. He has also received instruction through music workshops from masters such as Toronto Philharmonic’s Christopher Lee, Jane Bunnett, Jazz legend Dave Liebman and Flute-boxer Greg Patillo. He has performed in Ottawa's Jazzfest, Festival Franco-Ontarien and London, Ontario's internationally renown Sunfest. In 2019/20, he spent some months travelling internationally which included connecting with musicians and performing in Beirut, Lebanon during the city-wide civil protests (known locally as the October Revolution).

Bios:

Ken Roy-
Over the last couple of years Ken Roy has developed a love for deep and soulful underground house music that invokes a spiritual connectedness between those sharing blissful moments on a dance floor. This ranges from slow tribal and oriental deep house to hypnotic progressive house and even sometimes into the realm of techno. Curating  thoughtfully arranged sets has become a creative outlet for him to continue expressing his love and passion for underground dance music.

Kina Forney-
Kina is an emerging multidisciplinary artist based in Ottawa, Ontario. She received a BFA with distinction from the University of Concordia in Montreal in 2009. She is primarily a painter with a background in animation, music, graphic design and computational arts. She has exhibited in both Canada and the USA.

Kina's most recent work is inspired by deep space digital photographs from NASA and the Hubble Space Telescope of visually compelling celestial bodies, specifically nebulae and supernovas. Using public domain images as a starting point, she creates large scale oil paintings highlighting the light, colour and movement in these scenes. The heavens are universally recognizable phenomena recalling humankind’s common ancestry. The space painting series aims to emphasize human connection through mutual acknowledgement of our infinitesimal existence and the urgent need for a sustainable, peaceful future. 

Kina currently practices painting from her home in Ottawa with her husband and two children.

Max Mira bio

A Montreal transplant since 2011, Max has wasted no time in embedding himself in the vibrant underground music scene of his adopted home. He has been tantalizing dance floors as Max Mira since 2016, and launched his latest project, Ossifer, three years later as an outlet for his darker and more experimental creations. With his alchemical blends and unexpected selections, Max’s DJ sets offer a much-needed escapism from the tired routine of business-as-usual dance music. 

Now a well-known face in Montreal's event circuit, he has opened and closed numerous influential names such as Magda, Developer, SPFDJ, Nur Jaber, and Anthony Naples. He also organizes regular afterhours gatherings in DIY spaces around the city via his Inner Circle and vol. x series, collaborating with many of the most innovative crews and artists on offer. Having recently joined techno label North Of Nowhere Records as co-manager, Max hasn’t missed any opportunities to support and advance electronic music culture in both his local community and beyond.

Paul Ciuk (a.k.a. Dauri Cems),  was born in Mexico City and has been living in Canada for the past 10 years.  On the decks since 2005, his minimalistic-montage-jazz, Nietzschean vibes see him always re-inventing/re-evaluating the musical values he holds dear. 

Throughout the years, he has thrown parties with different collectives like: Love For Life Collective, Tekne and Rhizoma.  From clubs to run-down buildings, and festivals, Dauri Cems has been featured all over Mexico and Canada. 

This mix is full of Minimal, Deep, Techno, House, Cumbia, Bass and all sorts of sounds to make you groove.

Corinne Blouin (a.k.a CoBlou) is a francophone multi disciplinary artist. Creating helps her self-reflect. She loves the process of exploring the many landscapes of her inner worlds through a variety of mediums. From Energy work to illustration, painting, photography, writing or sound, her expression is limitless. She’s endlessly curious about the creative process and how it interacts with our daily lives. Through that, she supports others in fostering a relationship with their own creative energy as she continues to explore hers. 

Luke Hunter
For Luke Hunter, every musical endeavor is an opportunity to create a completely new experience through sound. His DJ sets and productions venture through a range of sounds from Progressive, Melodic Techno, to Deep & Evolving House while blurring genre lines. Without these lines of limitation, he seeks to find an overwhelming sense of connection with the listeners, invoking the thrill of hearing a track for the first time to allow them to drift into an audible journey that sparks emotion, thought and mutual understanding. He focuses on delivering long continuous mixes fused with emotion and intention in the highest quality possible. 

Luke has productions supported by Hernan Cattaneo & remixed by the legendary Robert Babicz. Passionate and animated, Amber is the living demonstration of an artist who loves her work passionately and intensely and continually tears up dance floors across the world.

Aside from DJing globally, Amber Long runs Toronto-based independent labels; Modern Agenda, Modern Architect and Honey Drops – all brands that focus on giving back to their large roster of artists. Modern Agenda is rapidly becoming a go-to label for music lovers and artists alike and Honey Drops carries a different flavor, encouraging artists to share their ambient and down tempo creations.
