Paris-born electronic music pioneer and 1970s GRM alumni Ariel Kalma joins with multinational New York trio Asa Tone (Kaazi, Melati ESP, Tristan Arp) for a series of intergenerational, electro-acoustic studio conversations, exploring elasticity within rhythm and winds… or as one early listener observed “space and time.”

Following a chance encounter at Ariel’s studio in the Australian rainforest during the pandemic, Melati & Kaazi began recording long live takes with Kalma, weaving in bioluminescent synth improvisations from Tristan Arp remotely. Revisited a few years later between the members of Asa Tone’s respective homes in New York & Indonesia, “○” is the document of a significant moment in the lives of all the album’s players; an ode to memory and connection in an era of crisis, illuminated via flickering fragments of steel flute, kantilan, modular synthesizer, xaphoon, tenor sax, EWI, field recordings of the surrounding rainforest, and the human voice.

Depuis 2015, et jusqu'à il y peu, je reçois mes messages vocaux... par e-mail. J'ai collecté, bip après bip, une archive très intime du flot de la vie. Nos manières de communiquer évoluent, et ce qui étaient invisible car usuel devient bientôt affectif et nostalgique. Ça y est, on ne me laisse plus vraiment de messages vocaux. Enfin, il y a toujours les vocals, ne coupons pas le câble ombilical tout de suite....
J'avais dans les bras une archive de dix années, et dans cet épisode j'ai voulu tomber dans l'engrenage d'un répondeur. Passeur de souvenir qui malaxe le temps de ses rengaines répétitives.

Et puis, last call, dernier épisode dans le nid de ma résidence à LYL radio. J'y ai grandi, changé, ma pratique mutante vous remercie. Maintenant, qu'est-ce qu'il y a après le bip, on tombe dans le silence? En tout cas il faut sauter, alors laisse ton message. I'll call you back.

From Finland, but based in Amsterdam, https://soundcloud.com/elinatapio is a DJ/radio maker/sonic researcher with a love for the cerebral, dark and psychedelic. She co-hosts the shows Scrying the Landscape on Mutant Radio with Hannah Pezzack and axia maxim on Echobox with Julia Mira. Together with Marco Segato, under the moniker eoobe, they produce otherworldly musical explorations with an avant-garde touch, deep and intense.

Her daily life atm revolves around executing a daytime job in music/data/machine learning related affairs while trying to finish recordings and releases with Marco for eoobe. Another important part of her day is feeding birds outside of her window, close friends, especially the crow-related ones, they’re so smart.

 Passions include an interest in good concepts and ideas across the board (and in sound). She's pushing herself to read more, though she can be very bad at that‎, but it’s important to see the world through different lenses, more deeply. Currently she's reading philosophy that is about time, hard analytical stuff from which a very esoteric world view emerges.

She’s working on becoming comfortable with being bored, but she’s made only little progress. She likes magpies, drones (the sound, not the surveillance), dry heat, and being fluid. She does not like the days getting shorter and darker, being stuck, silly expectations, and unveiling too many personal details.

 In her mix Elina takes the time to set the mood, slowly raising the tension. Temperature’s rising, almost reaching boiling point. What she’s giving, keeps you sizzling. Out-there mind-twisters, restless rhythms, hypnotic and tripped out gems. The blazing sun makes you melt… almost.
