Episode 13: Felicity Mangan

“hi leaves” is the new full-length record from soft tissue, the duo of Glasgow-based artists Feronia Wennborg and Simon Weins. Following their self-titled debut for Penultimate Press in 2019, this collection examines microsound by way of extended amplification technique, bone conduction, domestic recordings, and digital feedback. Tracks like “plant pot” and “kettle” appear to disclose their source material, presenting wonderfully tactile environments of highly articulate sound. Wennborg and Weins prove themselves to be masterful arrangers of discrete, organic material, weaving together knotty and immersive compositions from these sharp, prickly sounds. Ultimately, soft tissue inhabits an intoxicating soundworld somewhere in between the patient abstractions of composerly eai music, the haptic indulgences of ASMR, and the diffuse digital pastorals of the 90’s a-musik/Cologne scene.

Japanese sound artist @yosuketokunaga debuts on @entangledvisions with "6 Lengths". Hazy synths and crackling ambiences appear and disappear over wide horizons of sound, resulting in a courtly and fascinating piece of sound research.

The abstract scenarios created by Tokunaga carry the listener towards gentle and meditative places, acting as sensorial bridges between reality and dreams.

This month's mixtape opens with an intimate archival recording from the 1970s by an anonymous Czech outsider-folk singer who calls for an immediate end to animal cruelty. Around the constant repetition of a fragment from a poem by the anti-fascist Spanish poet Miguel Hernández, Katya Shirshkova and Yura Kuznetsov gradually deconstructs their composition. 

Liis Ring's pulsating ambient questions the true meaning of home, while the wailing sound of Elina Bolshenkova's accordion in On Hold is a testament to its true worth. Brno's Sky to Speak creates miniatures that move in between library music and tropicalia in their song Feather Palms. All this wrapped in a freshly released field recording featuring the works of Belgrade-born Manja Ristić, Toronto-based Alëna Korolëva and Prague-Berlin duo Veronika Svobodová and Pia Achternkamp.

There is no word or genre that unites the artists of the label. Putting a word on a style, in order to classify, takes part of the magic away. Instead, what unites us is our passion for sound, dancing with friends and growing together.
