This weeks Macondo Mix comes from Leeds-based Jordanian DJ and radio host Yasmeen, the brilliant mind behind SouqSounds; a fantastic project showcasing art and culture from the SWANA region and it’s diaspora. Through charity events and regular slots on Sable Radio and Narr Radio, Yasmeen is always creating spaces for open discussion and her shows always make for an incredibly fascinating listen, exploring everything from Turkish Cinema to experimental Sufi music in great depth. 

This week Yasmeen has once again put together a mind blowing selection of music, this time diving into the world of Arabic film scores;

 ‘Acid swells, and tableh drums, this hour mix travels across the Arabic speaking world showcasing film scores from Toufic Farroukh and Hany Mehanna, love songs from legends Warda and Bandaly Family and funky guitar riffs and organ work from The Scorpions and Saif Abu Bakr.’

Macondo Mix 006: Yasmeen

For the last decade, the tireless work of Tel-Aviv quartet Maor Anava, Zach Bar, Yoav Magriso and Ariel Tagar has been shining a light on magnificently obscure and previously forgotten Middle Eastern sounds. As a DJ crew and label heads of Fortuna Records, their carefully curated reissues focus on the psychedelic end of the spectrum and give their Israeli homeland the exposure it deserves. Their NTS show is another bastion of good taste and takes in everything from Arabic pop to acid, free jazz to traditional Arabic sounds.  

This week's mix is a similarly freewheeling selection that is steep in hypnotic Arabic music, transcendental instrumentals and curious grooves. It makes for an intoxicating listen with snaking melodies that lead you down a rabbit hole before loose-limbed Middle Eastern rhythms carry you to the edge of the dance floor and back again. Add in leftfield dub and ritualistic vocals and you have an authentic snapshot of a unique musical world.

It all started digital and melted into a highly respected vinyl label: since 2008 Hivern Discs spreads unique sounds out of the heart of Barcelona. In the beginning the label that was co-founded by producer and DJ John Talabot, was linked to the sample-heavy, disco and pop affected house, that Talabot and his Madrid based buddy Pional produced at the end of the last decade. Furthermore techno and minimal are part of the early output, as well as synthesised psychedelia and electronica of all colours. All wrapped in hand stamped or one-off designed covers that have been outlined by their in-house designer Arnau Pi. While in the beginning Hivern Discs featured mostly Spanish artists, the roster opened around 2013 and features today in demand artists from all around the globe like Roman Flügel, Man Power, Red Axes, INIT, Marvin & Guy or Dorisburg. Just shortly after the Catalan imprint launched a new sub-label called HVNX, Hivern Discs founder John Talabot and label A&R Daniel Baughman selected some of their favourite tracks on the label’s catalogue as well as some forthcoming music and never-to-be-released material for a Carhartt WIP Radio show and Daniel Baughman mixed it all down in the Hivern way.
