Something is cooking. Afro-Venezuelan rhythms meet James Brown inspired funk on “Cafunga” by Raúl Monsalve y los Forajidos. Over hip-shaking bass guitar, big brass chords and the beat of the clarín drum, we hear how to make the best cafunga, a very old Afro-Venezuelan recipe made with plantain and cheese.

Taken from Raúl Monsalve y los Forajidos exhilarating ‘Bichos’ album, forthcoming on Olindo Records. A potent stew of raw funk, jazz, afrobeat and Afro-Venezuelan rhythms, it features an all-star ensemble of musical trailblazers including “the voice of Venezuela” Betsayda Machado, singer Luzmira Zerpa (Family Atlantica) and drummer Dave De Rose (Agile Experiments, Electric Jalaba).

Due for release on October 16, 2020 on vinyl, CD and digital, ‘Bichos’ is available to pre-order from Bandcamp as of today with an instant download of “Cafunga”, to coincide with Bandcamp waiving their fees until midnight PST today (August 7th).

With producer/engineer/drummer Malcolm Catto (Heliocentrics, Quantic, Yussef Kamaal) behind the recording and mixing desk, Raúl brought together a like-minded cast of friends from Venezuela, Paris and London, to help him create a fresh sound, capturing the essence of both the African and indigenous roots of Venezuelan music, and the forward-looking sounds of afrobeat, gritty Latin jazz and experimental electronic music. 

‘Bichos’, Spanish for ‘vermin’, ‘bugs’, ‘beasts’ but also used in Venezuela to refer to someone as a “nasty piece of work”, draws all these strands together. The album uses a variety of animals, among them the mosquito, butterfly, pig, snake, rooster and flea, to represent a wide range of human qualities, such as greed, hate, love & compassion, and their impact on Venezuelan and worldwide corruption & division, the strengths of friendship, family, collaboration, rebellion and survival.

Monsalve previously released two celebrated albums with his first Caracas-based incarnation of los Forajidos before moving to Europe, where a new line-up toured Europe, were invited to play David Byrne’s Meltdown Festival, and released a sought-after 7” on Olindo. 

Aside from touring and recording with los Forajidos’, Raúl has shared stages with legendary Nigerian saxophonist Orlando Julius, the Heliocentrics, Venezuelan master percussionist Orlando Poleo and members of Fela Kuti’s Afrika 70, and as a member of Venezuelan avant-folk quartet, Insólito UniVerso, he has enjoyed the support of BBC 6 Music, Songlines, Wire & The Vinyl Factory for their debut album, also on Olindo Records.

On "Cafunga", los Forajidos are: Raul Monsalve on guitars & FX, Edgar Bonilla on keys, Julien Matroz on trumpet, Andres Vela on tenor sax, Christine Roch on baritone sax, Baldomero Verdú, Joel Arriaga & Ernesto Marichales on cumacos and clarín, and Dave De Rose on drums.

Hi everybody we’re back with a very special guest: Manu Boubli, the co-owner of Superfly Records and the guy who has introduced me to deep spiritual Jazz 15 years ago.

For this 27th show I started the first half of the mix with only Future Classics with the lovely spiritual tunes by Asher Gamedze, Phi-Psonics, Raffy Bushman, Cool Affair & Sisonke Xonti  and Tenderlonious. Also, the contemporary ambient jazz of Hania Rani and the brand new brazil flavored sound from Caixa Cubo, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Adrian Younge feat Azymuth and A Bossa Elétrica for a killer Roy Ayers’ Cover.

Manu Boubli chose a great selection of his “favorite things” featuring some forgotten and very rare spiritual jazz nuggets from Catalyst , The Lightmen Plus One, Brother Ah, Ayizan, Jack Wilkins , Steve Colson Unity and Sun Ra And His Outer Space Arkestra. For all the jazz dancers you can find the killer tune from David Wertman Sun Ensemble “Forrest Dance”, what a Tune!

Coincidentally, as Nat Birchall did for My Favorite Things Vol 26, Manu opened his set from a deep reggae track from Count Ossie & The Mystic Revelation Of Rastafari, definitely a must have record. Enjoy!

In April 2019, 22a boss and multi-instrumentalist, Tenderlonious embarked on a trip to Pakistan to work with Lahore based instrumental quartet, Jaubi. 22a presents the full suite of improvised ragas from a one day recording session in Lahore, Pakistan. The pure sounds of Indian and Pakistani classical music act as a framework for deep and spiritual improvisations between Tenderlonious on flute & soprano saxophone and Jaubi band members, Kashif Ali Dhani on tabla and vocals, Zohaib Hassan Khan on sarangi and Ali Riaz Baqar on guitar.

Jazz & Milk - 15 Years Anniversary Edition w/ Dusty & Àbáse (November 2020 / dublab.de)

We are very pleased to premiere "A Macieira", the uplifting and graceful lead single and first track on 'Orla', the debut LP from London-based Lusophone-influenced jazz ensemble, Caravela, due out February 26 on None More Records. 

The London-based ensemble explores musical traditions from Portuguese speaking cultures, encapsulating influences from Brazil, Cape Vert in West Africa and Portugal. 

Their debut full length LP ‘Orla’ is an intoxicating mix of Afro-Brazilian rhythms and contemporary London jazz drenched in modern psychedelic and progressive textures. 

The band’s deep and infectious grooves form the basis from which they can showcase their beautiful and mature songwriting craft. Lyrics touching on social and environmental issues in both Brazil and Cape Verde, as well as reflections on modern life, weave between the songs in Loubet’s native Portuguese.

Initially inspired by a recent period of living in Bahia, Brazil, interacting and working with local musicians there, Caravela took that experience and melded it alongside their wide range of influences to deliver a stunning set of contemporary songs.

Hypnotic and groove-laden percussion ties together all the different elements Caravela are bringing to the table, from Afro-Brazilian influences like Candomblè music or the tropicalia of Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso with some darker, electronic elements reminiscent of Radiohead, electric era Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock. ICaravela have opened for Gilberto Gil, and their ranks include members of Waaju and Bahla. 

There’s also a grittiness from the band’s music evolving from within London’s contemporary jazz scene that makes Caravela’s music uniquely their own.  The African and Brazilian rhythms and jazz approach remain at the core of the group's sound, but the development and growth of their own songwriting, diverse range of textures and influences and their soaring vocals and spiritual lyrics make their sound so distinct. 

‘Orla’ showcases Caravela’s growth from their debut EP in 2017, building on their digging into Brazilian and Cape Verdian music to develop their songwriting and sound. It represents the growing sense of identity of Loubet and Sousa’s songwriting partnership, organically developing the songs through spontaneously singing lyrics and melodies over Sousa’s ideas on guitar, the music came together very naturally.

Lead single "A Maciera" builds on a clipped and funky guitar line, strong percussion and tight, syncopated drums as Loubet’s incredible vocals soar above the band, reflecting on the folk themes of maturity and innocence, as with the eyes of an old woman, strong and steady, like the old apple tree.

"A Macieira" is released on November 27 on all streaming platforms, whilst 'Orla' is out on vinyl and digital on February 26. Available to preview and pre-order as of now on Bandcamp direct from the label, None More Records, also home to released by Jouis, Monzanto Sound, ProjectKarnak and Lunch Money Life.
