A più stromenti: Virtuoso Concertos of the Italian Baroque

Rachel Podger, the brilliant international violinist, leads Juilliard415’s gifted students in a performance of concertos by Veracini, Vivaldi, Corelli, and Valentini. Various combinations of strings, oboe, flute, and bassoon show off the composers’ ingenuity and the players’ virtuosity. A highlight will be Rachel Podger’s rendition of Vivaldi’s Concerto in D Major, “L’Inquietudine.”

Madness and Enchantment

Hear the diabolical in Boccherini’s Sinfonia in D Minor, “La Casa del Diavolo,” the madness in Telemann’s Ouverture, “Burlesque de Quixotte,” and the enchantment in excerpts from Purcell’s The Fairy Queen. The charismatic British conductor Jonathan Cohen directs the extraordinary students of Juilliard415 as they offer yet more madness with pieces by Durante and Corelli.

A playlist featuring the artists coming to MB1800 in our 44th Season. 

Music Before 1800 is the longest running early music concert series in New York City. We have been presenting vocal and instrumental chamber music at Corpus Christi Church for over 40 years, with programs of sacred and secular music ranging from Medieval to early Classical. Offering artists of the highest caliber, we present audience favorites as well as rising stars. Our artists, including New York’s finest ensembles, come from across the United States, Canada and Europe.

Our Thursday evening offsite concerts are held in different locations in Manhattan. For our 44th season, all three will take place at The Kosciuszko Foundation.

2013 - Campra - Cantate Silène - Récit et Air - Sous un feuillage épais...

This is the finale of Rossini's William Tell Overture. This section is also known as "March of the Swiss Soldiers." The popular rhythmic pattern is commonly associated with galloping horses both in cartoons and in real life.

This digital arrangement was based on the original score. Instrumentation consists of a piccolo, a flute, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, four french horns, two trumpets, three trombones, timpani, a triangle, cymbals, and section strings.

All parts were recorded using EastWest/Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra.

An alternatim hymn in which Du Fay wrote polyphony for the even numbered verses, the odd ones being chanted. Recorded live on December 22, 2007 at First Church in Cambridge, Congregational by engineer Philip Davis of Cape Ann Sound.

Dorothy Elmhirst (1887-1968) was an American-born social activist and philanthropist whom alongside her husband, Leonard Knight Elmhirst, renovated Dartington Hall and its gardens between 1925 up until her death in 1968, founded the Dartington Hall Trust, the Dartington Hall School, the Dartington College of Arts and the Dartington International Summer School.

As Hildegard of Bingen became more celebrated throughout Europe, she successfully persuaded the Catholic Church to allow her to form her own her own monastery in 1165. Rather than being a place of confinement, it became her seat of power as she developed a unique female voice. Through her writing she presented a radical, alternative view of the medieval, including that of the female body that was liberated from dominant notions of sexuality. A poet, musician, scientist and a nun of the Benedictine Order, Hildegard was a true maverick, however devout, of her time.

This work for violin and viola exploits Hildegard’s maverick nature by marrying her responsorial ‘O vis aeternitatis’ with a ’jig’ dance constantly battling with 3-time, a musical construct that would have been considered rather worldly and exclusively for pagan ritual.

Triptych – The Musical World of Hieronymus Bosch

Hieronymus Bosch, the Dutch painter who famously depicted music as nightmarish, lewd, or a vain pursuit in his Garden of Earthly Delights and Ship of Fools, was a member of Brabant’s singing confraternity at the Church of St. John the Evangelist. Missa Cum jocunditate, by Pierre de la Rue, might well have been in the confraternity’s repertory and is the program’s main work.
