Utilising frozen signals, granular synthesis, field recordings and a largely improvisational approach on various instruments in order to create vast, shifting soundscapes, A View From the Bungalow offers a slowly unfurling, meditative reflection on a year thrown into turmoil and forced into stand still. Each part of this suite is inspired by finding the fleeting moments of escape and beauty from an unending cloud of uncertainty. From a bungalow in Thornbury, to the rugged coastal expanse of Urquhart's Bluff, through to the brief respite offered by Darebin Parklands.

Improvisation and composition dance around each other cyclically as this album is played out. The tactile and haptic sensations of the bow drawn across the strings of the double bass are echoed by the synthesis of captured sounds - both acoustic and electric - and signal processing; new life is breathed into these various instruments as the ability to swell and grow past the point of decay is introduced. All underpinned by the ubiquitous found sounds of the great Australian landscape.

This album was written and recorded on the land of the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation. We pay respects to their elders, past and present.

Gordon Li - A View From The Bungalow

"I almost always get started on mixes from falling in love with a particular song and the moods it evokes. I then try to find other songs to extend and develop that feeling further. In the case of this mix the anchor song was ‘Jungle is a Shapeshifter’ by Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement, which was first encountered during restorative yin yoga class back in 2019. It got played almost every day in my room throughout 2020. It helped me to feel calm and set the backdrop for my mind drifting off to wonderful, quiet places. On a few occasions I would look over my shoulder and find my cat Romeo blissing out to it too. Being able to share the enjoyment with him made it even more special.

I hope this mix helps the listener feel something like what Romeo and I felt in those days.

"This mix was made at a time when I was feeling particularly burnt out physically, mentally and socially. Daylight savings had just ended, the weather was getting cooler, and all I wanted to do after getting home from work was listen to music that would make me feel warm and fuzzy. It’s a mixture of songs I have cherished for a long time, as well as some that I fell in love with in the midst of putting the mix together.

"I live in a new home, in a new city, in a new time. Tying together the fragmented memories of the many homes before this one, I’ve arrived at the notion that home is a sensorial abstraction. I’ve never had a physical structure (a house) as a home for more than a couple of years (moved around a lot ~ change > stasis) … So, to me, home isn’t structural stability, it’s stability in all the cliched ways; the people, the memories, a conceptual place that keeps your heart safe. And certainly, through everything that activates my senses and pulls me closer to those memories ~ music, smells, fleeting laughter, soft textiles, wet earth ~ I feel home. Not as a place of arrival, but a place of holding. 

I’ve been making playlists titled ‘Home 1, 2, 3, etc.’ over the past couple of years to keep track of shifting sensory portraits - to extract a feeling of home from temporary or unfamiliar settings. It’s cool (really cool, actually, like coming full circle for the nth time) to give these songs another home in this mix for Music Company <3" - @slowfoam

Influenced by an array of experiences, ‘Venus Leak’ tracks the process of recalibrating oneself in the face of a changing world, centrally - musing on doomed love and the final destination of personal growth.

The EP was completed during the move back to Makeda’s home-town of Brisbane - where the space, blue sky and sub-tropical weather play strongly into the concepts of intuition and self-realisation.

"I am often captivated by music’s ability to hold space and nourish connections amongst us; warmly delivering a textured presence and buoyancy to the now.

The following hour is an aural representation of some recent moments shared exploring the depths and discomforts of stillness in myself. A somewhat scattered state of acceptance amidst the flux of shedding and growth.

Recorded on a stormy Makuru evening in Walyalup, many of the tracks played represent feelings of forgiveness, distance and the internal tussles of self-surrender.

Best paired with a pot of honey-laced tea, I hope this mix can soundtrack the sometimes chaotic dance of the world outside your window.

Vector Fields on Skylab - #2

Guided by their love of harmonic colour within sound; they perceive chord progressions and harmony as vivid colours and experiences, and this premise is what lies at the centre of their creativity. ‘i.d.’ follows a narrative of Asha searching for their identity, a resolve to try and break through metaphorical walls to unearth who was underneath. 

“During our extended lockdowns in 2020, like so many others I decided to actively spend some much over-due time on learning more about my “true” self. I felt as though I had been squashing down or hiding a lot of aspects of myself for my whole life, which had really stopped me from living my life authentically. I felt very surface-level as a person.”

‘Own Worst Enemy’ is a tense exploration of not knowing yourself and battling with your inner critical voice. ‘I Was Always You’ is a joyful celebration of finally stepping into your true self, particularly as a nonbinary person, feeling the release and expanse of their inner self.

The end result is a genre escaping, vivid and explorative two-track EP that is as honest as it is beautiful. An extraordinarily candid experience that touches on the very human adventure of self reflection and acceptance.

Utilising frozen signals, granular synthesis, field recordings and a largely improvisational approach on various instruments in order to create vast, shifting soundscapes, A View From the Bungalow offers a slowly unfurling, meditative reflection on a year thrown into turmoil and forced into stand still. Each part of this suite is inspired by finding the fleeting moments of escape and beauty from an unending cloud of uncertainty. From a bungalow in Thornbury, to the rugged coastal expanse of Urquhart's Bluff, through to the brief respite offered by Darebin Parklands.

Improvisation and composition dance around each other cyclically as this album is played out. The tactile and haptic sensations of the bow drawn across the strings of the double bass are echoed by the synthesis of captured sounds - both acoustic and electric - and signal processing; new life is breathed into these various instruments as the ability to swell and grow past the point of decay is introduced. All underpinned by the ubiquitous found sounds of the great Australian landscape.

This album was written and recorded on the land of the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation. We pay respects to their elders, past and present.

"This mix took inspiration from the classical form of a fantasia, which has its roots in the art of improvisation. A fantasia seldom follows the textbook rules of any strict musical form and neither does this collection of songs. I’ve always enjoyed finding cohesion between unlikely musical pairings, it’s like doing a weird jigsaw puzzle.

The third track, ‘Neptune’ from Gustav Holst’s orchestral work ‘The Planets’ (1918) (the most strictly classical song of the mix) caught my attention after finding an old LP copy at my local Op Shop. The concept of Holst’s work is astrological; each movement intended to convey ideas and emotions associated with the influence of the planets on the psyche.

My dad affectionately refers to my brother and I as his "hopeless Pisces children” so naturally I included the movement devoted to Neptune; ruling planet of our star sign. Notably, it was one of the first pieces of orchestral music to have a fade-out ending. Holst stipulated that the women's choruses are "to be placed in an adjoining room, the door of which is to be left open until the last bar of the piece, when it is to be slowly and silently closed", and that the final bar (scored for choruses alone) is "to be repeated until the sound is lost in the distance”. The result is this beautiful dying away in sound, as if you are walking away from something special that continues on without you. This mix also includes a recorded session of the Iso Improv Collective (track 5) - a group of 10-20 Melbourne based musicians/artists who have collaborated weekly via zoom during social distracting restrictions.

Majority of the mix was put together during a period of self-isolation in Aldinga, South Australia. From the back garden, I could hear waves from the nearby beach, so in a way the mix is an ode/ longing for the sea, as well as a reflection on time, the times we live in, freedom, to those in the North Melbourne commission flats, to race, to the demise of America, to Australia’s first nations people... and how these thoughts circle and overlap in my mind as the light shifts across different objects of the lounge room, one day passing into the next." - @grace-ferguson-8

For Episode Sixteen we host a guest transmission from favourite new local label Music Company. Their debut release, Grace Ferguson's 'Voler', quickly became a COVID classic - an introspective and sensuous collection of piano compositions that stay with you long after the final note is played. Their second release ‘Vector Fields’ collects 17 Australian musicians. It’s a breathtaking experience from start to finish - a rare accomplishment for a compilation of its length. Thank you Lauren and Bradley for sharing your musical world. 

In their own words: 
“We started the Music Company label with the idea of showing people music for all three spaces in their life, the home, the not-home and the internet. Ambiguous maybe, but we feel there is a slither of sound that is suitable for all three environments, and that small gap between the real and unreal is where we've found a home. 

This mix was recorded in a similar space, between the real and unreal and in a home that is not ours. We are currently in South Australia and have been for a few months in hope of some pandemic reprieve and much needed family time, but we've ended up here much longer than we anticipated. Creating a new home, for now. 

This is a mix for the days that pass without warning, perpetuous in their monotony. An ode to time, and the times, full of warmth but rife with distance. Familiar and weird.”

My external world was feeling pretty turbulent at this time - however the process of collecting and arranging this music amongst it all provided me with a meditative escape. Much of my listening is rooted in a relationship of sharing food with people that I love.  For me, a cooked meal is space for connection, whether that be amongst others or in solitude. 

This collection of sounds stems from scents of parsley stems, olive oil-y hands, fresh mussels and a gentle breeze.
