Guided by their love of harmonic colour within sound; they perceive chord progressions and harmony as vivid colours and experiences, and this premise is what lies at the centre of their creativity. ‘i.d.’ follows a narrative of Asha searching for their identity, a resolve to try and break through metaphorical walls to unearth who was underneath. 

“During our extended lockdowns in 2020, like so many others I decided to actively spend some much over-due time on learning more about my “true” self. I felt as though I had been squashing down or hiding a lot of aspects of myself for my whole life, which had really stopped me from living my life authentically. I felt very surface-level as a person.”

‘Own Worst Enemy’ is a tense exploration of not knowing yourself and battling with your inner critical voice. ‘I Was Always You’ is a joyful celebration of finally stepping into your true self, particularly as a nonbinary person, feeling the release and expanse of their inner self.

The end result is a genre escaping, vivid and explorative two-track EP that is as honest as it is beautiful. An extraordinarily candid experience that touches on the very human adventure of self reflection and acceptance.

Utilising frozen signals, granular synthesis, field recordings and a largely improvisational approach on various instruments in order to create vast, shifting soundscapes, A View From the Bungalow offers a slowly unfurling, meditative reflection on a year thrown into turmoil and forced into stand still. Each part of this suite is inspired by finding the fleeting moments of escape and beauty from an unending cloud of uncertainty. From a bungalow in Thornbury, to the rugged coastal expanse of Urquhart's Bluff, through to the brief respite offered by Darebin Parklands.

Improvisation and composition dance around each other cyclically as this album is played out. The tactile and haptic sensations of the bow drawn across the strings of the double bass are echoed by the synthesis of captured sounds - both acoustic and electric - and signal processing; new life is breathed into these various instruments as the ability to swell and grow past the point of decay is introduced. All underpinned by the ubiquitous found sounds of the great Australian landscape.

This album was written and recorded on the land of the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation. We pay respects to their elders, past and present.

Music is an innately social activity, even music created in the interest of self-reflection and meditation. Early in 2020, Australia's response to the rapidly evolving Covid-19 pandemic had the music community close its doors not only to the outside world, but to each other. By order of a government directive, all social gatherings - including live music performance, group rehearsal and collaborative recording - were to cease around the country.

It was unclear at the start of the pandemic what role peer-to-peer interaction played in the lives of Australian composers. Many already worked from home, well versed in the art of creating spaces of solitude in cities, of building environments conducive to self-reflection, innovation and creativity.

But how much do we really depend upon our community? In a world where self-isolation is no longer a personal choice, will creativity flounder, or flourish?

The recordings in this series are a document of these months and these reflections. A meditation on the way we exist and create, both together and in solitude. As with any creative work, it is up to the listener to draw what they will from these works, and to carry this forward into the world they now inhabit.

New releases will be added ongoing 1 by 1, fortnightly from October. Depending on how long this V2 lockdown goes, we may add even more. Who knows, we may continue this until 2022, forever in hibernation and isolation, yet not isolated.
