Adjaye’s process brings together composed and improvised layers, with master musicians of South Asian and West African ancestry responding to the artist’s ethereal compositions. During recording sessions at Chiswick House, the master musicians heard Adjaye’s compositions for the first time and their improvised and innate responses were recorded. The resulting instrumentation evidences a potent fusion of classical Indian and West African instruments including sitar, kora, bansuri flutes, tablas, harmonium, cajon, udu, djembe, dhol, kanjira and talking drums. The inclusion of alap vocals tips a nod to the role of melodic improvisation in North Indian classical performance. The confluence of these instruments has produced a challenging and innovative combination that explores tempered tunings alongside universal rhythmic interpolations and nuances.

 I have wanted to include in this my last job "Gemini-lounge collection &amp; a third element," all my luggage in a mix of musical genres that are well suited and perfectly match my idea of music lounge and chill out together with the jazz / swing (which is the third element as the title but also, probably, the most relevant), although I do not like to confine my conception of music in a predetermined style.

As a true tradition of improvisation, all the songs have not previously been written or tested several times before recording, but have been recorded "directly" leaving it to chance and my inspiration of the moment and the outcome of the success of the piece.

Based on ‘silence’ and the picture of the view of the Sea of Galilee from the Sinai Desert in the centre of the pavilion. Understanding that the focal image resonates with feelings
of inner peace, stillness, and meditation and so the soundscape composition refers to the approach to the sea (Suite 1), to the sea itself (Suite 2) and then to the wider landscape and horizon (Suite 3).

SOUND JOURNEY
This piece is a soundtrack that is enigmatic and drives forward in an exploration to an unknown destination. The first wooden chamber is completely dark except for the muted light sources escaping through the slits. Immediately all your other senses are enlivened especially the smell of the wood. This is what the soundscape tries to accomplish by gripping your senses from the onset as the sounds kick in taking you on an afro-classical musical journey. As you enter the main chamber you are met by a leading violin that traverses the macroscopic viewpoint to the microscopic as each painting reveals its intricacy surrounded by a glow from a uniquely constructed natural light source.

PATTERNS OF SOUND
The aesthetics of the design of this innovative contemporary library concept is mainly Inspired by the Kente cloth of the Akan people of Ghana, Africa and the repetition of patterns of green and blue found in the traditional market stalls in Whitechapel, East London. This concept by David that directly embeds the many local Asian cultural backgrounds and the market stalls they inhabit inspired my musical soundscore that also points to the east. The composition’s recurrent theme features eastern flutes, tabla, percussions and landscape sounds arranged in a dynamic and contemporary manner to represent the contemporary diasporic cross cultural melting pot that is the London borough of Tower Hamlets, which has more languages spoken in it than any other borough in the country.

ACOUSTIC INTERFERENCE
An atmosphere was needed that would help minimise the background sounds from the electronic equipment in this innovative interactive space called the Nobel Field that was required to last for at least ten to 50 years. The original soundscape consists of 100 different layers representing the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prize which was given to Wangari Maathi, that can be used in any combination, creating infinite permutations. The space has 18 speakers, three subwoofers, 18 channels of amplification in six bays, using computer hardware, software (max SP) and graphics.

SOUND AS SCULPTURE
When David was announced as International Designer of the Year 2011, he asked me to compose a soundscape that listeners would be able to stream on their phones while they were interacting with his design piece. Using a QR link the audience were asked to interact with this architectural furniture or sculpture that was designed as an entrance, exit and resting space for Design Miami. The composition is based on the notion that at whichever spot you occupy you are visible from three different natural light sources that enter this triangular shaped space. The first movement references early primordial dawn utilising the voice and percussion to represent the beginning of human life and nature respectively. This leads into the second movement that embodies the turbulence of creation. The third movement refers to the fusion of the land and sea and earth and sky as a unified solid, spinning body that is in perfect harmony.

LISTEN TO THE ECHOES
This soundscape composition follows a sketch by my brother David. The pavilion is subdivided into three and the composition follows likewise in terms of arrangement, phrasing and length. It has a beginning; rising strings full of intrigue and drama representing the inclined entrance, implanted on a pulsating heartbeat-like sound bed of Harp and Koto which evoke the rough texture of the pavilion’s material of recycled timber. The middle space is darkened with strips of lights of different frequencies, evoked by Drums reflecting the emphatic energy of the centre space with a musical ‘drop’ of synthbass (hot frequency) and an abstracted melody on Kalimba (cold frequency). The last corridor at the end, reclines downwards to
a separate exit on other side of the pavilion with sounds of pizzicato violin, piano, synth pads and kettle drums cascading around you. This composition directly echoes the structure as a musical imprint.

MUSICAL DUALITY
The building is of a dual nature, at once a forboding dark, rough looking exterior leading to playful internal spaces where work and play at once meet and are nearly intertwined. So the music shares this duality with the low cello strings continuously building to reveal and revel in the intersection between these distinct moods. Later, the synth arpeggios and piano, percussion and bass jumps in as a juxtaposition to the edgy and avant-garde cello lines.

ABSORBTION
The composition leads with minimal percussive sounds that represent the absorption of light by the dark front facade of this house. As the piece develops, shards of chords and strings emulate the light rays that start to flood the space as you move through the house from the many skylights and roof lights situated throughout. These chords progressively mutate, transform and start to move and push as a way of pointing at the numerous occurrences of light sources from many different angles: from the centre, above the space to then finally skywards following the light source. The other pointers in the track are church bells, sung excerpts from the Torah and then the Koran representing the chronological establishment of the settlers in this part of London, which has absorbed Christians, Jews and then Muslims communities.

EMOTIONAL ARCHITECTURE
The composition feeds on the important sombre and historic narrative of the story of Stephen Lawrence. Therefore the intensity of the piece envelopes you in a dramatic score of melancholy and at the same time luxuriousness that is a reflection of the deep vibrancy of the colour shades of deep pinks, greens to purples. This inspirational building has large panes of glass that are adorned with unique and achingly beautiful patterns created by Chris Ofili that throw amazing dancing shadows throughout the space. You can hear the sound of the glass panes represented by the subtle percussion throughout.

'Reflections of a Golden Dream' for 'Dialogues'  VINYLFACTORY/MUSICFORARCHITECTURE By Peter Adjaye

Peter Adjaye aka AJ Kwame is a contemporary conceptual sound artist, specialising in experimental soundscape design for installations and cross disciplinary collaborations. He is a musicologist, composer, DJ-producer, musician and, a Mathematician with a PHD. His unique set of skills and vast experience have enabled him to work closely with his brother, the award winning architect, David Adjaye OBE, for over 10 years. This work has culminated in a new publication, ‘Dialogues’ on MusicforArchitecture Records in association with The Vinyl Factory. Peter has exhibited his unique sound installations In places Such as The Design Miami, Tate Modern, Design Museum, Art Institute Of Chicago, Somerset House, Studio Museum Harlem.
