The long anticipated follow up to Magik Cyrkles and Magik Sunrise comes Part One of Magik Sunset. 

With more than a year spent tracking down the artists and licensing the music both parts of Magik Sunset will be a fitting end to the Magik series that has seen Psychemagik unearth some incredible music.

Sunset picks up where Sunrise left off with another fine selection of tracks mainly released in extremely small numbers, sometimes only on private presses and only reaching specific parts of America and Europe.

Fresh from a packed summer of Ibizan parties Darius Syrossian is back on Hot Creations with his pumping Danzer EP featuring a remix from the prolific remixer Adesse Versions.

Darius explains that the idea for Danzer was born out of frustration with current music sounding the same. Inspired by a Floorplan Boiler Room set he wanted to make a track “that has the energy of techno, some funk flavours and also heavily disco influenced. It became a firm favourite at my Amnesia residency with DO NOT SLEEP”.

Danzer is an utterly insatiable peak-time cut with a dizzying drop, powerful female vocal hook and scintillating strings. The techno tool version does what it says on the tin, adding an almighty bassline that reverberates throughout. Initially beginning life as a vinyl edits project, Adesse Versions has gone on to have releases on revered labels including Razor N Tape and Delusions Of Grandeur. On his version he flips the track on its head, taking it on an altogether different route, layering extra percussive pads and womping synths.

2018 has been a huge year for Darius Syrossian. He began a new residency at Ibiza’s infamous Amnesia, alongside big names including Cassy, Martin Buttrich and Alan Fitzpatrick. No stranger to the White Isle, he’s also held down residencies at some of the island’s most prestigious venues. Syrossian has had releases signed to impressive imprints from Moon Harbour to 8Bit and Get Physical to We Are The Brave. This year also saw Darius begin his radio show on Rinse FM, with the imminent launch of his own label, Mozy Muzik, still to come.

Brain Pilot was made up of two brothers out of Belgium named Dimitri and Stefan Van Elsen, also known as Trans-4M (their iconic album Sublunar Oracles was recently reissued on Safe Trip). In late 1993 they started to make tracks for a local label called Nova Zembla. Inspired by the IDM movement, UK, Detroit and European techno sounds having roots deep into the Belgian scene, they forged thru three full-length releases as well as an EP from 1994- 1997. Four releases, virtually unknown to most outside of their country, accurately predicting the future while expressing the more current timeless sounds of the underground. Styles came and went. Fashionable genres ran circles – they come and go. Fast-forward to now and history beckons for the quality of the old days… Brain Pilot’s sound is as relevant than ever. 

22 years after their final release, Kalahari Oyster Cult has chosen some choice cuts off of each release and spread them out over a 2 piece vinyl anthology. Most of these appearing on vinyl for the first time. It starts out with four songs from the debut self-titled album. ‘C.N.S’ immediately shows off the balance of Brain Pilot. Futuristic techno, timeless melodies and beat patterns influenced in IDM. ‘Feel Real Good’ continues this signature in referencing classic post-Detroit style with current UK intelligence while keeping that Belgian post-rave attitude. Embracing new styles like in ‘E.E.G.’ , it’s like listening to a Tri Repetae track from Autechre. This mechanical jitter is a great segue into their second album’s featured tracks such as ‘Serotonine Flow’ , the otherworldly ‘Brainsine’ and the addictive robotic funk in ‘Nutrient’. The anthology completes with Brain Pilot exploring an even deeper scientific sound with examples like ‘Wet-Wired (First Wiring)’ and ‘Substantia Electronica’. The track ‘Disconnect’ and the previously unreleased ‘Shifting’ bring listeners to the realm of 150bpm rollers. When you dig for music you always want to recognize unknown gems and give them a new life. The allure and celebration of finding and rediscovering electronic music that slipped thru the cracks are one of the most rewarding feelings a music lover can have. Kalahari Oyster Cult has presented that for us on a silver plate. Brain Pilot – a most fitting name.
