Like many great, up and coming producers from the UK, beatsmith Ben Hauke hails from South London and has a tendency to look for inspiration from far off places around the globe. In his upcoming release titled Only Old, Ben has decided to branch out from the comfort of his bedroom studio to incorporate the timeless sounds of Brazil, Cuba and Colombia. Furthermore, it appears that Mr. Hauke has paired up with a Brazilian-focused label aptly named Far Out Recordings to come out with a record that's absolutely brimming with authenticity and eccentricity.

Ben's track Digi Luv really embodies the overall aesthetic he tries to create throughout the EP. Relying on an assortment of sampled beats and live instrumentation, the maestro is able to build a solid, jazz-laden groove around the mesmerizing vocals of little-known songstress Eggrum. The result leaves the listener with a vibe that's reminiscent of the Bossa Nova classics that were likely to inspire Ben while constructing such a slow-burner of a tune. What's truly impressive about the song is how authentic it sounds. After listening to it, one would think Digi Luv was most produced by an artist based out of South America and not the town of Lewisham - which is a pretty incredible feat in and of itself. No wonder Ben is already being anointed as one of the shepherds of London's new jazz movement. It's well-deserved.

Music Is My Sanctuary is excited to premiere “Quarantena” by Tenderlonious.  The lead single and title track from the prolific producer and multi-instrumentalist’s brand new album.

Tenderlonious returns to his own 22a imprint with a brand new collection of lo-ﬁ beats and soundscapes courtesy of the lockdown studio sessions from his home in South London. Lockdown allowed Tender to escape from his busy lifestyle and touring schedule, ﬁnally giving him the time to properly explore and experiment with the vast collection of synths, drum machines and instruments he’s built up over the past twenty years. Armed with an arsenal of hardware and inspired by sci-ﬁ & fantasy movies, he has delivered an expansive opus of varying tempos that glide across imaginative synth sculptures and meditative soundscapes. The soundtrack to his quarantine - ‘Quarantena.’

When COVID-19 hit the UK back in March this year the music game changed almost overnight - no more gigs, no more studio sessions with the band, many music stores and outlets shutting up shop. This drastic change offered plenty of time for reﬂection, opening up a new portal of exploration for Tender -  he purchased his ﬁrst piece of studio equipment at the age of 16 and has since then amassed a serious arsenal of studio hardware. Some people collect stamps, some of us collect records, Tender collects synths and drum machines. The lockdown period offered up the opportunity of more time in his home studio, brimming with hardware, that due to his busy schedule, had yet to be exhausted.

The title track, “Quarantena”, has an epic soundtrack feel with luscious pads, soaring strings and orchestral horn lines, backed by solos from Tender on ﬂute and also featuring Nick Walters on trumpet.

‘Quarantena’ is Tenderlonious' most conﬁdent, slick and accomplished work to date, smoothly mixing up genres and styles with ease, from house to boogie, through to more meditative soundscapes with his signature jazz instrumentation - a future classic!

The “Quarantena” single sees digital release this Friday, with the full album to follow on physical and digital release on August 21st.

MIMS is delighted to debut “Momus” the soaring and celestial new single by Melbourne-based jazz violist/violinist and orchestral composer, Tamil Rogeon.

Released on November 11th, “Momus” is the latest single from Son Of Nyx, his new album releasing 5th February 2021 on Greg Boramans' new imprint Soul Bank Music (part of the !K7 Music Group). His first full-length album in three years, Son of Nyx is one of the very few viola-led jazz LPs of our time.

Having chosen the violin over drums at an early age, Rogeon learnt his chops with the bow at college and in Melbourne increasingly famous jazz circles, a scene recently championed by Gilles Peterson on the ‘Sunny Side Up’ compilation on his Brownswood Recordings imprint just last year. 

After discovering the innovations of jazz violinists, Don “Sugarcane” Harris, Jean-Luc Ponty and Stuff Smith, a period spent retracing his steps through jazz then followed, diving into fusion, boogaloo, Bitches Brew-era Miles-era Miles and acid jazz, before moving to New York, to study bebop in its very birthplace. 

Playing at jams, busking in subway stations, and entertaining his love of Bird and Miles followed, until Rogeon moved back to Melbourne (via London), where he formed the jazz-influenced, orchestral electronic group, The Raah project with singer and MC, Ryan Ritchie, and whose debut thirteen-track LP Score (2009) boasted an impressive 22-piece horn and 17-piece string section. 

A second album of equally cinematic, orchestral soundscapes followed in 2015, before Rogeon departed again, this time for Rio De Janeiro, to record the album 24 Hours In Lapa (2017), a 12-part suite built on Brazilian rhythms, featuring the 30-piece Orchestra Victoria, and centring around the tragic story of a young expat killed by an off-duty police officer in Lapa, in 2007.

Through all this, Rogeon has composed TV/film scores, worked with the likes of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, The Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO), and the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM). Now with Son of Nyx, Rogeon has returned to where it all started for him. 

Of the forthcoming album, Rogeon says, “after studying jazz for ten years and then leaving it for various crossover projects, it seemed an important thing to do. I felt it was the right time in my life to put out a record like this”.

We are very pleased to premiere "A Macieira", the uplifting and graceful lead single and first track on 'Orla', the debut LP from London-based Lusophone-influenced jazz ensemble, Caravela, due out February 26 on None More Records. 

The London-based ensemble explores musical traditions from Portuguese speaking cultures, encapsulating influences from Brazil, Cape Vert in West Africa and Portugal. 

Their debut full length LP ‘Orla’ is an intoxicating mix of Afro-Brazilian rhythms and contemporary London jazz drenched in modern psychedelic and progressive textures. 

The band’s deep and infectious grooves form the basis from which they can showcase their beautiful and mature songwriting craft. Lyrics touching on social and environmental issues in both Brazil and Cape Verde, as well as reflections on modern life, weave between the songs in Loubet’s native Portuguese.

Initially inspired by a recent period of living in Bahia, Brazil, interacting and working with local musicians there, Caravela took that experience and melded it alongside their wide range of influences to deliver a stunning set of contemporary songs.

Hypnotic and groove-laden percussion ties together all the different elements Caravela are bringing to the table, from Afro-Brazilian influences like Candomblè music or the tropicalia of Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso with some darker, electronic elements reminiscent of Radiohead, electric era Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock. ICaravela have opened for Gilberto Gil, and their ranks include members of Waaju and Bahla. 

There’s also a grittiness from the band’s music evolving from within London’s contemporary jazz scene that makes Caravela’s music uniquely their own.  The African and Brazilian rhythms and jazz approach remain at the core of the group's sound, but the development and growth of their own songwriting, diverse range of textures and influences and their soaring vocals and spiritual lyrics make their sound so distinct. 

‘Orla’ showcases Caravela’s growth from their debut EP in 2017, building on their digging into Brazilian and Cape Verdian music to develop their songwriting and sound. It represents the growing sense of identity of Loubet and Sousa’s songwriting partnership, organically developing the songs through spontaneously singing lyrics and melodies over Sousa’s ideas on guitar, the music came together very naturally.

Lead single "A Maciera" builds on a clipped and funky guitar line, strong percussion and tight, syncopated drums as Loubet’s incredible vocals soar above the band, reflecting on the folk themes of maturity and innocence, as with the eyes of an old woman, strong and steady, like the old apple tree.

"A Macieira" is released on November 27 on all streaming platforms, whilst 'Orla' is out on vinyl and digital on February 26. Available to preview and pre-order as of now on Bandcamp direct from the label, None More Records, also home to released by Jouis, Monzanto Sound, ProjectKarnak and Lunch Money Life.
