Following a prosperous career in music and poetry, Detroit-based musician and performer Malik Alston readies his vibrant album ‘Malik Alston Presents Painted Pictures: Air’ set for release via The Jazz Diaries. The album is a spirited celebration between jazz virtuosity and Motor City house music, showcasing Alston’s roots in Jazz, Gospel, Soul and Dance Music. 

Alston’s story is one that is intrinsically aligned with the story of Detroit itself. Having hosted one of the first Slum Village concerts, and teaching vocal lessons to many members of the Detroit music community. His production and writing collaborations read like a who’s who of Detroit artists including Alton Miller, Amp Fiddler, Roy Davis Jr. & Javonntte and releases on Moodymann’s Mahogani Music to name a few.

“‘When I think of ‘Air’... for me, it exists to express a combination of freedom, self awareness, and doing something different and new. In ‘Air’ you get to really hear the band as a whole, no one stands out individually. It was all a matter of showing that we brought the music to life together as a unit. ‘Air’ is definitely a true reflection of what Painted Pictures was: free musicians who play good music.”

One-to-watch, Liam de Bruin steps back up to the Heard and Felt plate with the irresistible live house grooves of "Lavender".

Since the release of modern disco jazz funk number "Friday Evening" on Heard and Felt we've impatiently waited for more from this exciting musician and producer. Finally, under the guiding hand and ear of Heard and Felt label boss Ennio Styles (3RRR FM/Worldwide FM), Liam is readying an EP that set to explore his love of house music and live instrumentation, from disco, boogie and jazz funk angles."Lavender" is a deeper number than "Friday Evening'", embracing more synth tones and a slinky, sexy, late night feel. And just when you’re feeling settled in the spacey groove, you find it's been growing in all directions, twisting into a low-key disco jazz bounce.

Considering Liam's feel for live house, jazz funk, boogie, and so on, it's no surprise he has been embraced so quickly by fellow Melbourne artists that have inspired him, like Close Counters, Horatio Luna, Teymori and Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange. Named after the famous flightless Tasmanian Nativehen, which can run up to 40kmph, TURBO CHOOK exposes a new side of McConnell’s musicianship (following his success as half of the house and soul duo Close Counters, who gained support from tastemakers Indie Shuffle, Clash Mag, XLR8R, NME, Mixmag, Pilerats, EARMILK, Stoney Roads, Gilles Peterson, to name a few). Similarly, Cruz holds a string of successful solo singles in his repertoire, such as the song ‘Venice’, produced by Tame Impala, and other collaborations including ShockOne and SuperEgo. Notably known as the frontman of the acclaimed group Koi Child, Cruz toured Australia prolifically with Tame Impala & Fat Freddy’s Drop,playing at festivals, international tours, and receiving a nomination for an ARIA Award for ‘Best Urban Album’, as well as acclaim from Beats 1, Triple J, BBC Radio 1 & more.

Described by Patterson as “a hip hop track that ever so slightly nudges the boundaries of the genre with its fast paced tempo and out of the ordinary story telling”, ‘Rushing’ recalls the night of the ARIA Music Awards, when Cruz’s drink was spiked. When TURBO CHOOK sent him the instrumentals, he felt they perfectly depicted the feeling of being unknowingly drugged: “I was rushing, kinda trippy, like time was spinning in circles around me”. Despite being characterised by a consistent and pressing groove, the track is painted with liquid tones which depict an enticing identity for the song. With Cruz’s storytelling and TURBO CHOOK’s skillful musical craftsmanship, the audience is encouraged to hear something new and refreshing with every listen.

"Rushing" will see full release on Friday February 18.

We are excited to premiere "Suits You", the deep and stirring lead track from Manchester soul outfit Lovescene's forthcoming 7" single via Band On The Wall Recordings. 

Lovescene are at the forefront of Manchester’s soulful scene - comes out hot on the release of the group’s debut album and is an irresistibly rich mix of velvet RnB, groove-laden soul and driving floor filler. A-side "Suits You" adds to the canon of RnB torch ballads in its lament over unrequited love. It sees Pops Roberts’ vocal soar high over gently rolling percussion, murmuring low-end and comparatively bolder guitars and keys that pull the track between hushed sadness to more heart-rending grief.

The full release is slated for April 8, with the bodymoving-orientated "	
Overnight (Dancefloor Mix)" on the flip.
