Yet, the majority of these releases have come from other artists, with Makvel's own music taking a back seat while he forged a unique lane for his label. No longer, as he brings you his first full-length in years - A Family Affair.

It's a fitting concept for an artist/producer/talkboxer who has put so much energy into the release of music by others. Many of those who can claim projects on The Sleepers join him, allowing this Family Affair to live up to its name. Mofak blesses the album's title track, a thunderous p-funk inspired opener, while XL Middleton shows up on two songs, dropping raps on "Keep Movin" while alternating between singing and vocoder on the electro boogie cut "Show The Way." On "Get Down," Bougito shows up to share production duties over a funk track sure to become a staple among poppers and lowriders alike. Moniquea sings and raps on the decidedly-left coast "I'm Not Sayin Nothin," while Funkmaster Ozone brings electro vocoder sensibilities to a disco-tinged boogie track on "We Come To Jam."

Temu offers his polished vocal style on one of the album's high points, "Essential Funk," a simultaneous nod to a pandemic-stricken world and a declaration that the party must still continue. Gil Masuda of Toronto's Love Touch Records is featured on the house-inflected "How You Make Me Feel," and fellow LTR artist Maya Killtron lends her unique vocal and violin one-two punch on "About You." Ivan only ventures out fully solo for two songs on the album, "Wild" and the previously-released "I Got Funk" - A move to be expected from an album designed to bring an entire funk family together.

As music in the digital age seems to be shifting back to a 60's era emphasis on singles over albums, those who clamor for a full-length installment of music from their favorite artists have found their thirst increasingly unquenched. Enter Leopard DaVinci & Louis 707, who are boldly filling this gap in modern funk music with their LP "Make The Party Great Again."

Living through an era of social distancing, event cancellations, and venue closures, making the party thrive as it once did is no small task, but this French synth-funk duo come across as extraordinarily energized to meet the challenge. It feels like every synthesizer sound ever conceived somehow lives within their arsenal, as a colorful blend of analog tones and back-cracking handclaps form the foundation for pure boogie bliss. From the album's inception, "Kinda Get Funky" sets the tone. It's clear that Leopard & Louis respect the original flight plan of the Mothership, though they draw more of their inspiration from subsequent sons of the "P" such as Zapp or 80's era Cameo. They remain uptempo throughout the entirety of the album, and even when they chill the mood slightly on songs like "Girl Oh Girl" & "I Get Up," it's only to spit a little slickness to the ladies before bumping the bpm's right back to where they were before. The album doesn't stray far from the usual topics of conversation in modern funk - Dancing, women, & funk itself. But such deviation isn't needed; if we're going to bring the party back we've got to stick to the script.

As always, Sleepers takes the time to package the music as thoroughly as it was created, this time in a full-color jacket on yellow vinyl. Limited to only 300 copies!

The APX announced the release of their debut full length project, Electrik Funk. The APX is a husband and wife duo from Atlanta best known for their 80s electro-funk sound which they describe as "a galactic atmosphere using synths, sax, and vocals”.

"I hope that people will not forget this composition and cypher and will look back more often. I also hope that people realize that we have such talented vocal talent in the Netherlands. And certainly a shout out to this band, every musician I have chosen are all individually very talented people. For example, the keyboard player Anan Ya'ari also produces his own music, but also credits to drummer Kick Woudstra, bass player Reindert Kragt, and Randell Heye on the trumpet."

I, Ced has been something of a “best kept secret” among creators and aficionados of modern soul music. His wide array of skills ranges from production to vocals, keys, and studio mixing. His talents have found him in the company of many heralded contemporaries, including Jean Grae & Quelle Chris, Coultrane, Jimetta Rose, & Dam Funk. After having lent his talents to so many other luminaries in the underground music scene, Ced is now poised to make an impact with his own material, via his next project on Los Angeles-based MoFunk Records. As a label best known for synth-heavy west coast funk tunes, the partnership with I, Ced marks a daring expansion of the MoFunk sound.

I, Ced unites his distinctive “future soul” aesthetic with XL Middleton’s left side bump on the remix to “Percu,” first heard on Ced’s What Are We Looking For? album. It’s a stellar marriage of sharp synth bass, warm Moog-style leads and
shimmering Rhodes chords with Ced’s hypnotic vocal chants and thickly-layered percussion sections, from which the track clearly derives its name. The remix is further heightened with an emotive vocal performance from fellow MoFunk
artist Moniquea.

Funkmaster Ozone was one of the very early adopters of what would one day form into modern funk & electro music. His 2007 "West Coast Pioneers" EP is a sought-after gem, highly coveted by record collectors worldwide. Whether you prefer the frenetic ticks of 808 beats and ghost-in-the-machine vocoder, or fat, gangster synth riffs with lowrider-ready talkbox refrains, the Germany native has had you covered for nearly two decades now. In fact, he's received big nods from, and collaborated with, heavy electro & funk hitters such as The Egyptian Lover & Zapp. Now he adds another notch to his belt with a new single from The Sleepers.

As with Ozone's previous releases, you will find an "E side" (electro) and a "P-side," a reference to the P-funk inspired brand of funk that he has always delivered. "Can You Feel The Heat?" sounds like it could've made it onto the "Breakin'" soundtrack, with an unmistakable aesthetic akin to 80's west coast hip hop. The flip, entitled "The Get Down," channels legends like Roger Troutman and George Clinton from right around the time he produced "Break My Heart" for Jimmy G. & The Tackheads. Now that you understand the vibe, be sure to act quickly, as this is a limited run - only 100 red vinyl 7"s pressed.
