Manoel Germano Filho (better known as Germannu) was born into a family of cocoa farm owners on January 11th, 1955 in Linhares, Espirito Santo, Brazil. He was the second born of three children, but refusing to buy into the stereotype of the forgotten middle child, it took just a few guitar chords, learnt at the age of 15, to start him on his musical path. (The chords were taught to Manoel by his much-revered older sister, Germana, which she, in turn, had learned playing religious songs at Catholic school).

Manoel started his foray into education by following in his family’s footsteps, earning his agronomy degree at the Federal University of Viçosa in the state of Minas Gerais. Yet it was music rather than soil that held his heart, and after a chance meeting with Milton Nascimento, one of Brazil’s biggest musical icons — both back then and today — he threw himself into the Minas music scene, burgeoned as it was by student movements and local music festivals.

Manoel’s attempts to bring his music to the general public were abruptly derailed by the death of his father. Shortly after graduating, his dreams were put on hold and he found himself back in his hometown of Espirito Santo taking care of the family’s business affairs. It didn’t take long for though for the music to win over, and soon after he invested a considerable sum of his earnings in musical instruments and sound equipment, as well as a mobile trailer which he used as a tour bus, setting out to perform in towns in the region.

In 1984, Manoel, now Germannu, met the composer, arranger, vocalist, and guitarist Jorge “Jóia” Olímpio at a show in Linhares, and a month later threw caution to the wind, moved to Rio and found himself crashing at Jorge’s house while putting down his roots. Over the following days and weeks, the recording of Germannu’s debut LP began in earnest, starting with his songs Lavoura, Fale De Mim, and Hei De Amar.

Jorge’s help was crucial. Although Germannu had certain melodies in mind and chord structures around which he wanted to build the songs, he hadn’t yet developed how the melodies would play out, nor decided how exactly the chord sequences would go.

The pre-production was done at Jorge’s home, before they moved over to the now-defunct Estúdio Rio near the Laranjeiras viaduct to flesh things out. Jorge Jóia called on his contacts and brought in musicians he was sure would work, including a bassist and former bandmate named Borjalo, with whom he had previously played with in a band that was put together by the legendary organ player, Lafayette. Drummer, Paulinho Black (ex-Banda Black Rio), and pianist, Moisés Pedrosa, were also part of the team, as was the fabulous Jorge Cardozo — who transcribed Jorge Jóia’s arrangements.

Sadly, Germannu is no longer with us, but the lasting groove of his music remains eternal and continues to bring a special kind of joy to those that hear it.

So, where does Notes On A Journey fit into all of this? Jürgen von Knoblauch — a longtime member of Jazzanova and Sonar Kollektiv, amongst others, is introduced on our site simply as Record Collector — met Junior Santos, a musician, drummer, and Brazilian music aficionado extraordinaire, when buying records from him. Junior convinced Jürgen to buy a record by one Celso Rubinstein — which led to a NOAJ reissue (which if you haven’t discovered already, you should). The collaboration between knowledge fount and collector was fruitful enough that Junior and Jürgen decided to work on more reissues. This Germannu record is their first complete collaboration, with more on the way.

For our first premiere of the week, MIMS presents “Spellbound”, lead single from UK-based producer King Knut’s forthcoming “XL” EP, due for release Aug 21. “Spellbound” is a hypnotic, heavy affair, putting us in mind of gritty 90s NY hip hop, dub, 90s trip hop and early Theo Parrish productions. 

We’re also very glad to share a video for the track, produced by Drive Me Home (Barkley Bandon, Later, CASisDEAD) and made using footage shot in the Costa Rican jungle by migratory naturalist, photographer, and small-scale coffee farmer Seth Beaudreault.

The EP comes on the back of 2018's cassette release Unreleased Beats Vol. 3 that received support and airplay from NTS, Wire Magazine and Trevor Jackson, and last year's remix for Lunch Money Life's Unlimited Ice Cream Palace on Kaya Records. The EP is mastered by Amir Shoat (Dean Blunt, Klein, Brother May).

A remix EP will follow later this fall with remixes from Cherrystones (Twisted Nerve, Touch Sensitive), Capitol K (Faith And Industry), Double Geography (Invisible Inc) and A'Bear.

Never really comfortable with tightly defined and rigid musical pigeonholes, The Fantastics! have always been pushing the boundaries and honing their musical eclecticism. Now the London based outfit return, joining forces with BBE Music for new single ‘Take A Shot’ featuring their outstanding vocalist Sulene Fleming, plus remixes from House music hero Richard Earnshaw.

Taken from the band’s forthcoming third studio album, also titled ‘Take A Shot’, this lead single serves up a bold taste of what’s to come: timeless songwriting, masterful musicianship, powerhouse vocals and a punchy, horn-laden arrangement. Richard Earnshaw’s ‘Little Big’ remix drives the song deep into booty-shaking Disco-House territory, showcasing Sulene’s vocals front and centre over a soul-satisfying groove.
Headed up by organist & pianist, DJ, radio presenter and former Freestyle Records head honcho Greg Boraman, The Fantastics! current line-up comprises bassist Raydn Hunter, drummer James Smith, saxophonist / flautist Mark Norton and new guitarist James Byron alongside immeasurably talented singer Sulene Fleming.

Performances at The Jazz Café and Pizza Express Jazz Club in London plus gigs and festivals across Europe have seen The Fantastics! share the stage with Larry Graham, Reuben Wilson and Bernard ‘Pretty’ Purdie among other greats since their official formation in 2007. Vocalist Sulene Fleming has recently finished a stint as lead vocalist for The Brand New Heavies, as well as collaborations with Incognito and Leroy Hutson.

All that live performance pedigree is captured brilliantly on ‘Take A Shot’, a warm and detailed recording that documents a tight, well-rehearsed band having fun together and inspiring one another in the studio.

The Fantastics! - Take A Shot

A super fresh slice of modern electro funk with squeeze of pop, grooving at a perfect mid-pace. "Haters Hate" is the third single taken from Technoir's forthcoming album, 'Never Trust the Algorithm'. MIMS is also excited to share a brand new self-animated video that the Milan-based couple made to accompany the single.

"Hater's Hate" doesn't pull any punches. A slamming beat and tell-it-like-it-is concept, referring to the constant negative content the couple read and experience online and importantly how that influences us, even if it's not obvious at the time.

Lead vocalist Jennifer Villa explains, "“Haters Hate", as you can get from the title, talks about the constant hate we are exposed to constantly, especially on social media and the web, and how this influences us even if we can't tell.”

Jennifer Villa and Alexandros Finizio who make up Technoir are the total creative force behind the project. Alexandros dominates the song writing and production elements, both sing and play multiple instruments and together, they carve out the artwork and create and manipulate the videos.

Whilst the duo's debut album NeMui (2017) nestled and flowed, their forthcoming LP bubbles with a sense of anxiety and foreboding, offering an insight into the couple's place in a world where social media and technology dominate our existence and algorithms favour the select few, monopolising art, culture and life. 

Released on 30th October, Never Trust the Algorithm melds beauty and anguish underscored by their love for hip hop, Radiohead and Frank Miller comics and will be released on CD, LP and digital via the bands own imprint Kengah Records.

Born into a family of artists and musicians Jacob Otton began playing piano and drums at age 5 after hearing his grandfathers Duke Ellington record and trying to replay "C-Jam Blues". From that first pivotal moment Jacob, known as Kid Sublime, has since devoted his heart and soul to all things music. From his early days drumming in Hardcore Punk bands to touring the world with Brazillian band Zuco 103 and working in the infamous record store Fat Beats, he quickly laid down a strong and solid foundation to build his career as a producing musician and Disc Jockey. After trying out an Akai MPC 60 in the late 90's, Kid Sublime got hooked to the machine and a few years later he released his first House 12", "Tea For Two" which was later re-edited by Francois K. He then crafted a myriad of future soul classics for Dutch label Kindred Spirits like his 'Basement Soul' album. From House anthems on his own 'Ballroom Records' imprint that have rocked dance floors all over the world, to Japan only albums that where so hot that the legendary BBE records re-released them so that more ears could hear KS's unmistakable sound. 

A true master of his craft, "Straat Coach" an opus of sorts, is his first full blown Dutch Rap album, humorous and witty but backed by insane 'bang it in ya jeep' style beats.

Premiere: Raul Monsalve y los Forajidos - Mosquito ft. Betsayda Machado

Plucked from an open mic by Grammy award winning producer James Poyser and quickly placed in the “right rooms”, guitarist and songwriter Ezekiel marries the melodies of the western world with the sounds of Africa. Born in West Philadelphia to Nigerian immigrants, he lives through a lens of liminality.

Influenced by his parents, Ezekiel developed a love for highlife music and traditional Afrobeat. He then consumed jazz and neo-soul. As a result, his music reflects a conversation in his soul between genres — deep drones gliding across bright chords, and a percussive bass, accented by chanting and lush tones.

Ezekiel challenges the objective definition of several genres backed by the rich sonic experience of Mell Starr and Eric Lau. The motifs of liminality and freedom -mental, social, and spiritual - are deeply woven into his forthcoming album Everything is Under Alarm slated to be released on December 4th, 2020

On the flip, ‘Cuttin Edges’ offers up rhythmic, tribal drums, tantalizing melodies harmonising delightfully with the raw, dynamic sonics until Swiss producer and Rebellion artist Quenum rounds off the release, superbly with minimal 80s sounding remix featuring acid-tinged moduations, cosmic pads underneath the effervescent synths and eccentric vibrations.
