We are excited to premiere "Bill" by Kuna Maze. With it's lush jazz chords and summery broken beat groove, it's the perfect track to see out the summer, no doubt it will fill a few dancefloors before the summer is out.

Released later this week, "Bill" is the lead track from “My Fish Is Burning", the new EP from Brussels-based producer, DJ and multi-instrumentalist Kuna Maze, aka Edouard Gilbert, due for release on 7th October, via Brighton UK's Tru Thoughts.  

The new single features keyboard player Dorian Dumont, who adds some extra magic touches to Kuna Maze’s layered jazz instrumentation and syncopated broken beat production.

Talking about the wonderfully bizarre EP name “My Fish Is Burning” (a nod to a Detroit-legend) Edouard says: “I was listening to a Moodymann interview on radio, and at one point he says to the interviewer; ‘hold on I gotta go, my fish is burning’. I don’t know why but it made me laugh, like he planned an interview while cooking his fish meal”.

​​Matching the eccentric title – sculptor, painter and long-time-collaborator Cedric Esturillo who produced the EP artwork – interprets the music into a visual form. The duo have been working together on their visual mix series “From Sight To Hearing”.

Boasting releases on Cascade and Galant Records, as well as remixes and collaborations with the likes of Andreya Triana, Blu Samu, Black Josh, Ødyssee, Katuchat, Woodwire, Winston McAnuff (plus loads more!), Kuna Maze has found a new home on the Brighton-staple Tru Thoughts, turning his hand to the resurgent sounds of jazz-infused broken beat.

Kuna Maze also has a duo project with Lyon-based producer Nicolas Morant aka Nikitch. Their excellent 'Débuts’ record is out now on Tru Thoughts, and has been remixed by no less than Domu.

A new fresh sound emerges on “Punk Funk” nods to the broken beat mastery of Dego & 4hero, swinging funk rap featuring Atlanta mc Stan smith and psychalic punk funk leanings on the aptly named title track. With Basement Membrane drummer Mike Mitchell aka Blaque Dynamite takes the percussive role. Mike started playing drums at the age of 2 (!), touring with heavy cats such as Kamasi Washington, Herbie Hancock, Erykah Badu and Derrick Hodge, releasingseveral albums as a frontman (which he sings on as well) and apparently those tight grooves had already been running in the veins of his family. Mike's uncle is the incredible Dennis Chambers, who played with people like Don Blackman, Funkadelic, Bernard Wright, Aurra, John Scofield, Santana and many more. The last piece in this powerful puzzle is bass and guitar player Lars Karakusevic, who also co-wrote several of the tracks on this forthcoming album. Beka wrote the rest.

Already receiving steady industry support from the likes of Lefto, selectors assemble, stepping to tomorrow, Mr Scruff and many more this album is cemented already as a future classic.

One-to-watch, Liam de Bruin steps back up to the Heard and Felt plate with the irresistible live house grooves of "Lavender".

Since the release of modern disco jazz funk number "Friday Evening" on Heard and Felt we've impatiently waited for more from this exciting musician and producer. Finally, under the guiding hand and ear of Heard and Felt label boss Ennio Styles (3RRR FM/Worldwide FM), Liam is readying an EP that set to explore his love of house music and live instrumentation, from disco, boogie and jazz funk angles."Lavender" is a deeper number than "Friday Evening'", embracing more synth tones and a slinky, sexy, late night feel. And just when you’re feeling settled in the spacey groove, you find it's been growing in all directions, twisting into a low-key disco jazz bounce.

Considering Liam's feel for live house, jazz funk, boogie, and so on, it's no surprise he has been embraced so quickly by fellow Melbourne artists that have inspired him, like Close Counters, Horatio Luna, Teymori and Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange. Brand new bruk banger from Kuna Maze, “Something To Say” meshes broken beat with the romantic edge of rhythmic Brazilian-funk. Forthcoming on the “Backward” EP for Tru Thoughts. Released 13th August.

“Backward” is a new direction for Kuna Maze and a new chapter for the artist. “It’s a look backwards to go forwards” explains Edouard Gilbert aka Kuna Maze. “It’s the first time on my solo project, that I’m using my background and training as a jazz musician.” Shedding off the post-dubstep sound that was linked to Kuna Maze’s initial success in his hometown of Brussels, “Backward” see’s the DJ, producer and multi-instrumentalist return to his roots, applying his studies of jazz at the Chambery Conservatory in France, to his musicianship and work.

“I want to make music that makes people want to dance. That’s why I love broken beat because it’s at the meeting point between jazz and dance music”. It’s not just broken beat that seeps through on the record, pockets of UKG/garage, house and jazz-fusion amalgamate into the sonic palette of “Backward”; direct influences can be heard from the likes of Domu, Moodymann, Azymuth and Horsepower Productions.

Having just released a collaborative album with French-producer Nikitch titled ‘Débuts' which saw the duo win over tastemakers such as Gilles Peterson, Nemone, Tom Ravenscroft (BBC 6Music), Jamz Supernova (BBC 1Xtra), Tim Garcia (Jazz FM) plus many more, Kuna Maze was motivated to add more live-elements into his productions, using the energy from this project and their extensive time on the road.

The EP artwork, by sculptor, painter and friend - Cedric Esturillo, evokes feelings of both nostalgia and modernity (a sentiment echoed in the music) through the use of collage and aerograph painting. “Aerograph was used a lot for jazz-fusion album covers in the 70s such as Miles Davis – 'Bitches Brew' and Herbie Hancock – 'Thrust', and with this EP I was looking back for the first time – so aesthetically it made complete sense to me.”

Astro Nautico’s Atlantics X is a compilation celebrating a decade of the label’s existence and fundraising to provide financial assistance for its community members impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

A wide range of beloved artists return to the label, including Photay, Time Wharp, Honey Oat, Michael Beharie, Lee Clarke, IGBO, Tatiana Heuman, Persona La Ave & Baraka, Andre Wiken, Basile3, and C. Form. Label co-founders Paul Jones (P X A), Sam O.B., and Kuhn all contribute new music in the tradition of the original Atlantics Vol. 1-3 compilations (’09-’13).

Astro Nautico’s first all-label compilation since 2013’s Atlantics Vol. 3, Atlantics X serves as an index of the artistic and curatorial development of a ten-year exploration of the interstices of genres, moods, and modes of musical creation.

From Photay’s chirping, thunderous dark mechanics on ‘Sea Urchin’ to Time Wharp’s feather light synth meditation ‘12-31-12,’ dynamic curves traverse a terrain of many sounds at many plateaus. Pop experimentalism in Michael Beharie, IGBO, and Sam O.B. sets a heartbeat that cracks, melts, and is resampled in the shattered electronics of Tatiana Heuman and fragmentary lo-fi trap of Kuhn, while Andre Wiken and C. Form differently treat the dancefloor as a space of reverie and intrigue.

Atlantics X is a crowning jewel of the mutual aid fund and fundraising campaign of the same name. Astro Nautico initiated this fundraiser in spring in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. All sales and streams of the Atlantics X compilation support members of the label's community with financial needs due to Covid-19. Since May, the label has published 12 projects, from singles and EPs to albums and contemplative dance videos, in this series. Astro Nautico has distributed $4,262.65 to date to fund recipients, with priority to BIPOC recipients.
