Maverick and mercurial UK jazz talent Sean Khan announces his upcoming BBE Music album ‘Supreme Love’ with first single ‘Starchild’, featuring vocals by Heidi Vogel and a remix from Kaidi Tatham.

Combining new arrangements of John Coltrane classics and original compositions inspired by his musical teachings, Sean Khan’s ‘Supreme Love’ is slated for release in June 2021. Opening salvo ‘Starchild’ offers up a scintillating taste of what’s to come from the project, with Khan delivering dextrous, elastic melody lines on both sax and flute over lush, evocative strings and an ultra-slick rhythm section. The piece also features heart-stopping vocals from long-time collaborator, and front-woman for The Cinematic Orchestra, Heidi Vogel.

“So Starchild is in an odd time signature: 7/4.” says Khan. “Coltrane was well known for using 7 note groupings or septuplet beat divisions, so that part is in homage to him. The lyrics are an ode to childhood. That’s when we are probably at our most creative, and the impulse to explore and create is generally lost, for a variety of reasons, when we reach adulthood. If we can retain this curiosity, then we continue to grow. Coltrane obviously retained this quality, but others of a similar sensibility like Bowie, Claude Debussy, Roberto Bolano and many others also tapped into their childhood experience. The importance of recognising the child within you and allowing it to flourish is a difficult thing. Many of us let it go but others try, so this song is in tribute to those people that try.”

Giving a subtle nod to his background in the UK Broken Beat scene with the contemporary arrangement of ‘Starchild’, Khan enlists fellow pioneer of the genre Kaidi Tatham to rework the track. Tatham’s version offers up warm electric piano chords over relaxed head-nodding beats, slowly evolving into an intricate, yet effortless, double-time bruk-up groove.

Produced in collaboration with Berlin-based duo Re.decay, DJ Amir presents a brand new remix of Strata Records founder Kenny Cox’s track ‘Lost My Love’, taken from his long- forgotten mid 70’s album ‘Clap Clap! The Joyful Noise’.

Originally planned to be the second release on Detroit’s mythic Strata label (a precursor to its more famous cousin Strata East), pianist Kenny Cox’s first and only solo album came hot on the heels of The Lyman Woodard Organization’s classic ‘Saturday Night Special’. But, for reasons lost to the mists of time, the LP never saw the light of day until DJ Amir licensed the rights to the label’s catalogue and began scouring the archive in 2012, rediscovering ‘Clap Clap! The Joyful Noise’ and issuing it on his own 180 Proof imprint.

The closing track from ‘Clap Clap! The Joyful Noise’, ‘Lost My Love’ is a bossa-tinged, flute and mellotron string-laden, languid jazz-fusion gem, with Kenny Cox’s delicate electric piano chords at its warm centre. DJ Amir joins forces with Berlin production duo Re.decay for a complete rebuild of the track from the original master stems. Their version retains the cosy, analogue atmospherics of Cox’s original, complete with piano licks and flute trills, adding unhurried jazzy disco drums and drawing out the song’s subtly sleazy bass-line.

Serving as pianist for Etta Jones and recording for Blue Note records with his Contemporary Jazz Quintet, Kenny Cox founded the Strata label in the early 70’s, a natural progression from the Strata Concert Gallery which he opened in the late 60s, a tiny artist-led performance space that played host to jazz luminaries such as Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock and even Charles Mingus (a live recording of whose appearance at the Gallery was issued by BBE Music in 2018). He passed away at his Detroit home in 2008, survived by his widow, Barbara Cox.

The compilation 'Rotterdam On The Move' which Arrhytmia is taken from, is dedicated to the more soulful, jazz influenced sound emerging from the city, in contrast to the city's reputation for Techno, Electro and the harder edge of dance culture.

The 6 track compilation features music from OG Wang, Chezz, Dikkens,  Kofi The Unknown, Beau Zwart & Sykes and will be dropping early September on Boggie Cafe Records.

Artists featured on 'Rotterdam On The Move' include the increasingly prolific bruk acolyte Kofi The Unknown, soulful house head Dikkens, the multi-talented Sykes and of course, Beau Zwart. 

Beau is a Rotterdam based artist, producer, filmcomposer and DJ. He combines his classical background with jazz, house and experimental electronica.

Beau Zwart's track is a fine slab of effervescent broken beat. 'Zarispit' boasts wonderfully crisp drums, a weighty bassline, heady organ stabs, and some quirky electronic touches.

Taken from 'Still Flute', the long awaited follow up to Tenderlonious' acclaimed 'On Flute' album, "Song For My Mother" is the perfect fusion of Ed Cawthorne's myriad musical sensibilities.

Ed's forthcoming 'Still Flute' album follows succession of releases over the last couple of years alone. From jazz fusion with his band Ruby Rushton, Hindustani classical with Pakistani quartet Jaubi, a tribute to British jazz legend Tubby Hayes, to space disco with Lorenzo Morressi, or deep house, electro funk and ambient electronica in his solo studio productions, Cawthorne has pushed at the boundaries, particularly his own, evolving, surprising and continuously captivating listeners.

"Song For My Mother" is one of four deep house jams sporting Ed's exuberant flute soloing. He tells us, "this is kinda the follow up to an old favourite of mine ‘song for my father’ that featured on my album ‘on flute’, so it was time I dedicated a tune to my mother. Clocking-in at just over nine minutes long, the tune builds with a multitude of percussive elements until it reaches a climatic flute solo before winding back down to atmospheric strings and a bubbly synth solo. Hopefully it’ll get some dance floors moving."

Due for release in October, 'Still Flute', is a very worthy addition to the Cawthorne's rapidly growing catalogue. Live flute and synth work sit comfortably over deep house, modern electro funk, spiritual ragas and ambient soundscapes.

MIMS is always excited to premiere new music from Byron The Aquarius,  and this time no less, as he applies his significant talents to remixing fellow Alabama resident, producer, rapper, singer Anthony Jamal aka VRGO.

Jamal takes pride in basing his music on feelings and emotions, rather than targeting specific genres and audiences. Something that certainly can be felt in his productions, often lying somewhere between hip hip and house.

Byron The Aquarius turns "Time" into smooth grooving jam, perfect for bumping in April. The EP also features a pumping mix from label boss, Flat White Chris.

The "Fake! EP" is due for release November 19 on vinyl and digital.

Following a prosperous career in music and poetry, Detroit-based musician and performer Malik Alston readies his vibrant album ‘Malik Alston Presents Painted Pictures: Air’ set for release via The Jazz Diaries. The album is a spirited celebration between jazz virtuosity and Motor City house music, showcasing Alston’s roots in Jazz, Gospel, Soul and Dance Music. 

Alston’s story is one that is intrinsically aligned with the story of Detroit itself. Having hosted one of the first Slum Village concerts, and teaching vocal lessons to many members of the Detroit music community. His production and writing collaborations read like a who’s who of Detroit artists including Alton Miller, Amp Fiddler, Roy Davis Jr. & Javonntte and releases on Moodymann’s Mahogani Music to name a few.

“‘When I think of ‘Air’... for me, it exists to express a combination of freedom, self awareness, and doing something different and new. In ‘Air’ you get to really hear the band as a whole, no one stands out individually. It was all a matter of showing that we brought the music to life together as a unit. ‘Air’ is definitely a true reflection of what Painted Pictures was: free musicians who play good music.”
