UK born and bred, Piers Kirwan is no stranger to DJ’ing and producing good quality house music. One half of Stereo Mutants who have released on Defected, Duff Note, Bubble Soul, Seamless, ONE51 and more. Piers has been DJ’ing since the early 80’s and as well as going to college with Aphex Twin and doing huge warehouse parties in Plymouth in the early 90’s, he has released an extensive amount of music and played alongside the likes of Danny Rampling, Smokin Jo, Alistair Whitehead, XPress 2, Claudio Coccoluto, CJ Mackintosh and many more.

Piers has a distinct style of production that’s clean and precise and does that rough with the smooth thing that we like. It’s hard hitting, atmospheric punchy beats with lush dreamy pads, vocal textures and synth leads that keep you on your toes throughout.
From the wavy synth pads, low punchy bass and snappy beats of the title track Broken Rules and Red Dead, to the more heavier tracks of Ragga Don’t Sweat and Rise Up, with their more upfront broken beat drums, Bass and Ragga vocal samples. It’s all in there, hand crafted for the dance floor, at home, your car, phone, Boombox, whatever! All settings are catered for in this EP!

"Beijo" is one of our faves on this EP. We’re straight in with a kiss - MWAH! - a classic Baile rhythm gets a warm Bruk embrace. It’s passionate and dark and tells a story as old as history. Get lost in the movements between drums and percussion, in the flutes and cicadas, until the organ bass calls it - time to get moving. This really is Trev’s signature dance floor style. A banger with a naughty- yet-subtle bassline, and its own game of perspective - feel this rhythm in more ways than one. Vocal chops and Tamborim place São Paulo’s influence front and centre.

London’s own Trev appeared on our first release, Body Music Vol 1, as well as other key releases on CoOp Presents and Local Talk. We’ve been fans from the start and, after Trev joined the family, his music went from strength to strength. It was already out-of-this-world production, with serious attention to detail, and this EP is nothing short of excellent! He told us “there’s no hiding that this EP is, in essence, a long love letter to Brazil'', but that it’s also written to "Iran, London, Lisbon, Japan, probably more - too many to remember!”. Trev described his pro- cess as “listening, learning, combining my favourite elements of all this music that has brought me so much joy over the years”. Right on!

This EP is fresh, different and sonically on point. It’s Bruk, it’s Brazilian, it’s Bass, it’s... all-round-really-good dance music! Trev is a real modern musician, an awesome keys player as well as a producer. He understands the importance of musicality and originality, together with weighty beats and bass, working just as well on the dance floor as they do at a house party... or dinner party, for that matter!

Drip by drip, drop by drop - the cup began to bubble like some sort of wild cauldron. It was all illuminated by the hazy murky glow of the streetlights which were all seeing and all knowing as they looked down upon the corner with a wicked orange fog.

One sip and it were as if time was moving ever so slowly - the noises which echoed all around were no longer there and the city was silent and asleep for a moment.

Wandering step by step, through the sprawling mirage of streets, boarded up shutters and empty buildings were all that was left to guide him from place to place. Sometimes it was better to be lost than found, besides whenever he needed to find solace in something, there was a purple whirlpool nearby for that.

On December 11, Co-Op - the definitive club night and home of the seminal, early 2000s broken beat movement - returns to Boiler Room for a second round.

Last November, Co-Op Presents combined members of the original community (including IG Culture and Bugz In The Attic members Seiji and Alex Phountzi) with current torchbearers like Henry Wu, K15 and Alexander Nut (Eglo Records). 

The memorable session was a flashback to broken beat's Plastic People heyday, reigniting interest in the influential scene and eventually resulting in Co-Op manning their own stage at Dimensions Festival 2016.

As if that's not enough, the crew also return with new music in the bag. The story goes that the day after last year’s event, Boiler Room programmer, Errol Anderson, arranged a studio session where the original and current folk could collaborate for the first time. 

The first glimpse at that get together is now ready to share. Listen to “Substance” with South London producer Henry Wu on original production and IG Culture and Alex Phountzi on remix duties.

Henry Wu “Substance (IG Culture & Alex Phountzi remix)” will form part of an official release (due mid-2017) featuring other original music sourced from that studio session.

In 2017, Vels Trio entered the UK jazz-fusion echelons with breakout EP Yellow Ochre on TRC. Conjuring the spirit of old greats and modern innovators like Herbie Hancock and Robert Glasper, the trio captured the underground audience whilst inaugurating themselves into the headsier jazz foray. With a feature from the mighty Shabaka Hutchings bolstering the EP to a broader audience, and astonishing live performances, the record led to sold out shows across Europe in 2018.

Since then the band have been busy on-hire for other prominent artists within international soulful jazz scenes, backing for the likes of Charlotte dos Santos and Poppy Ajudha. Their individual journeys involve drummer Dougal Taylor working with Emma-Jean Thackray and Neue Grafik Ensemble on critically acclaimed EPs, bassist Cameron Dawson signing to Ubiquity with Mamas Gun, and keyboard virtuoso Jack Stephenson Oliver creating dancefloor magic with our very own SAUL and Nigerian composer Etuk Ubong.

Fast forward to 2020, with follow-up single ‘The Wad’ conquering the Spotify jazz playlists, the band have an album in the works for 2021, dropping on your doorstep via Rhythm Section INTL.

In advance of our signing of the bands new album, we're most excited to re- release the classic "Yellow Ochre".
Originally released by the now legendary Total Refreshment Centre - the press has long been out of circulation - garnering silly prices on Discogs.
Our re-issue will be an upgrade - getting pressed on 180gsm heavyweight audiophile vinyl, available in balck & ltd edition yellow ochre.
