I got the opportunity to officially remix this classic song to coincide with the release of a new Donny Hathaway box set. I was given the original multitrack master of the studio version (different from the live version)and it consisted of 8 different instrument and vocal tracks (as opposed to the more usual 24 tracks) 
When I take on a remix, my first goal is to make it work on a current dance floor. I like to stay very close to the originally recorded sound and In most case there's plenty to be reworked on the multitrack master to achieve this. 
This case proved a little different as there were few rhythm elements I could use to fit within current standards of club loudness levels. So I decided to take a slightly different approach, and add a new set of (acoustic) drums,  to bend the original Soul vibe a little towards Disco territory.

Opolopo first came to the attention for many as the man behind the genre-crossing house remix of Gregory Porter’s ‘1960 What?’, a tune that finished in the Top Ten of many DJs in 2012. Labeled future jazz by some, it’s only a minor part of the Opolopo story which spans genres like a musical suspension bridge.

Opolopo was born Peter Major in Zirc, Hungary, a short drive away from the beautiful tourist spot Lake Balaton, but spent a large part of his childhood touring around with his keyboardist father, listening to the fusion sounds of Herbie Hancock, Jeff Lorber, Jean-Michel Jarre and Tomita, while finally ending up in his current residence of Sweden. It’s little wonder he’s ended up where he is.

His work, both on remixes and original productions is imbued with a life spent listening to the soul, funk, jazz and fusion of his youth. Yet, while clearly inspired by the past, Opolopo’s work still has enough clank and clamour to suggest its feet are still firmly in the present, whether it’s channeling the sound of a 21st century D-Train, dark, fathoms-deep house or doom-laden dubstep. His reworking of St Germain’s ‘Sure Thing’ suggests someone inheriting Ludovic Navarre own jazz-house crown, while ‘Treat You’ by Omar is underpinned by all sorts of wonkiness while Omar takes care of the topline. His remix and production work has appeared on JVC Japan, Tru Thoughts, Warner Bros, Tokyo Dawn and, of course, Z Records.

Arguably the best way to consume Opolopo is live, where he brings together DJing with an array of gadgetry that suggests an electrified Bob Dylan, switching between playing records, tweaking the vocoder, while still finding time for tasty keyboard flurries in between mixes. You don’t get that with Tiësto.

While Opolopo remixes dart from René & Angela basslines to delicious house music, his album Superconductor, is channeling the ’80s, a decade that has been a constant source of enrichment for the Opolopo sound. Superconductor is firmly built around the song, with many collaborations, among them Keni Burke, Diane Charlemagne, Taka Boom and others. Filleted in between even the tracks seem to a have a stronger purpose than mere fillers. ‘The Run’ sounds like a theme from a long-lost sci-fi programme, while ‘Monolith’ sounds like a tune exhumed from the vaults at Tabu Records. In short, Opolopo is a one man Jam & Lewis.

Opolopo, as you undoubtedly know, is Yoruban for ‘plenty’ and on Superconductor there is a superabundance of sounds, styles and, yes, tunes. Come feast.

Majestic Fantasies, debut album from the duo Space Ghost & Teddy Bryant, is the second release on Space Ghost’s new record label, Peace World Records. Produced by Space Ghost, with Teddy Bryant’s powerful vocals at the forefront, this new album sees the two artists effortlessly blend their shared influences from the late '80s and early '90s.

Over three years in the making, in Majestic Fantasies Space Ghost & Teddy Bryant look to the past for inspiration as they explore genres, techniques, and moods. Across the record, Bryant’s vocals shine as he demonstrates a strong ability to create memorable nostalgic hooks and catchy backing harmonies. Similarly, Ghost displays his knack for dissecting vintage production tropes and breathing life into them in a modern context.

Filled with underground, soulful gems, Majestic Fantasies draws deeply from the duo's passion for R&B, UK Street Soul, New Jack Swing, House, and G-Funk. Their 10-track LP freely blends these genres, paying homage to song writers like Teddy Riley, Jam & Lewis, Carl McIntosh, and DeVante Swing. On the album you’ll find tracks like “Some Things Last Forever” which explore New Jack Swing drum patterns and vocal hooks. Although the two have never met in person, Space Ghost and Teddy Bryant still find a way to connect through their music. The 8th release from Sole Aspect Records is a sonic experience celebrating rich traditions of Chicago, Detroit, and New York. The Customary Finesse EP showcases a thoughtful dialogue between deep house and soulful techno, delivered with analogue warmth and understated elegance. Life Recorder’s “Blues in Flight” opens the A-side with layered synth work, warm pads, and hypnotic percussion—offering a deep, introspective glide for the dancefloor. Laak’s “Apophis” follows with a moodier, late-night pulse, featuring dubby textures and subtle melodic progressions that hint at cosmic tension. On the flip, Laak’s Retroflex Remix of “Blues in Flight” transforms the original into a minimalistic groove, dripping in tape-saturated nostalgia and spacey motifs. We are delighted to present a guest session from Moscow’s LAY-FAR, one of the most talented and prolific new talents in the new global house scene.

Since 2012, the young Russian producer has released two full lenght albums (So Many Ways, released in 2013 on Glenview and How I Communicate in 2016 on Local Talk), over 20 EP’s and remixes on every quality label under the sun.

We asked Lay-Far to make us a mix focused on his influences and roots, outside of the house world. He whipped up this amazing 70’s Grooves session. Vinyl-only, with the exception of one edit which he produced.
