Growing up in a small town a few hours from California’s East Bay area, Space Ghost (Sudi Wachspress) moved to Oakland ten years ago to study at the California College of the Arts. In a city known for its vibrant cultural fabric and its experimental music scene, Space Ghost represents a new generation of young artists. His DJ collective Late Feelings, launched in 2013, has allowed him to find his own groove amongst monthly all-vinyl dance parties, where he plucks influences from various corners of the world.

via @kitgrill: "I was already a big fan of Vini Reilly but this gave me a chance to dig much deeper into the Durutti Column catalogue. It was tough choosing the tracks as he’s so prolific but the mix aims to give an overview of different styles, moods and compositions across various albums. On a side note, personally the first album ‘The Return Of The Durutti Column’ still has one of the best covers in music using sandpaper for the record sleeve (that apparently Ian Curtis stuck on)."

[ INSIDE ] EP28

Dozens of cherished recordings were made during the legendary “golden age” of Ethiopian music, an era stretching from the early 1960’s through the mid-1970’s. Less-discussed are the songs made in the aftermath of the 1974 revolution that toppled Emperor Hailu Selassie I. The acclaimed and highly sought-after LP by Hailu Mergia and the Walias, Tche Belew, an album of instrumentals released in 1977, is perhaps the most seminal of these recordings. The story of the Walias band is a critical chapter in Ethiopian popular music, taking place during a period of music industry flux and political complexity in the country.

Hailu Mergia, a keyboardist and arranger diligently working the nightclub scene in Addis Ababa, formed the Walias in the early 1970’s with a core group of musical colleagues assembled from the remnants of prior working bands attached to the Zula and Venus clubs. One of the first “private” bands, the Walias got a steady gig at the prestigious Hilton Addis Ababa and remained independent from the government-supported bands of the time as well as from the clubs who employed bands.

This week, @maxsalty delivers an hour of sumptuous sounds from 1955–1978 to give your private longings the Italian cinematic backdrop they deserve. True to its title, this mix is a fusion of light and darkness, pairing smoky twilight jazz with bright ballads of love and anguish from classic Italian pop divas. A mix to be savored fireside on a cold evening, with Chianti and a bleeding heart.
