Tahira is a well known character and good soul of São Paulo’s music and digging community, regularly searching through record shops, private collections or dusty attics around the country. The passionate DJ dedicated the past four years extensively researching Brazil’s broader spectrum of musical styles and slowly started to introduce more and more African and indigenous elements in his DJ sets.

Miguel Colmenares from Colectivo Futuro has cooked up a spectacular homage to Venezuelan music with as much love in the curation as he and his label partner Oli Brunetti invest in their wonderful label Olindo Records. Having just released the second album by Raul Monsalve y Los Forajidos 'Bichos' - the mix incorporates the main threads of influence for that brilliant album - contemporary Afro-Venezuelan sounds / Tambores, classic Salsa as well as some more traditional sounds like Joropo / Musica Llanera. Indeed it features a track from Bichos as well as another Venezuelan act on their label Insolito Universo alongside the 70s psych of Un, Dos, Tres y... Fuera and legends like Oscar D'Leon and Los Amigo Invisibles.  If this selection doesn't convert you to Venezuelan sounds we don't know what will!

OFF THE RECORD ist eine Reihe von Listening Sessions, die 2017 aus einer Initiative von Interkultur Ruhr, Kalakuta Soul Records (Bochum) und der Labelmanagerin und Residentin im Programm von Interkultur Ruhr Avril Ceballos(Cómeme)hervorgegangen ist und in einer Kooperation mit dem Atelier Automatique fortgeführt wird.

Unter dem Titel FOR THE RECORD stellen Guy Dermosessian (Kalakuta Soul Records) und Eva Busch (Atelier Automatique) die Gastmusiker*innen und -DJs der Reihe mit Interviews und fantastischen Mixtapes persönlich und musikalisch vor.

Der in Kapstadt geborene, charismatische und energiegeladene DJ, begabte Produzent und hoch motivierte Pädagoge Esa Williams hat eine eigene, einzigartige und expansive musikalische Identität geformt. Als Botschafter der südafrikanischen Musikszene in der überfüllten Landschaft des europäischen Nachtlebens schöpft er Inspiration aus seinen kulturellen Wurzeln, seinen weltweiten Reisen und den Leuten, die er kennenlernt, um einen Sound zu verkörpern, der keine Grenzen kennt.

Esas Umzug nach Großbritannien war ein Auslöser für seinen beeindruckenden Musik-Output, der sich stets weiterentwickelt. Nachdem er sein Naturtalent im Auflegen unter Beweis gestellt hatte, schloss er sich den legendären schottischen DJs Harri & Domenic im Sub-Club an und produzierte danach sein Rememory Music Label. Esas globale Perspektive erweitert sich ständig. In Europa hat er viele Fans und dank seiner kreativen musikalischen Produktion und seiner Veröffentlichungen werden es immer mehr. Mit der Kuration von Bildungsprogrammen mit Fokus auf elektronische Musik in Kuba, Brasilien, Ost- und Südafrika hat er sich eine eigene Nische geschaffen. Dadurch, dass er seine Fähigkeiten teilt und andere DJs und Produzent*innen inspiriert, erweitert er auch sein eigenes Wissen.

Auf seinem monatlichen Sendeplatz bei Gilles Petersons Worldwide FM kann man hören, wie Esa die Geschichten solcher Begegnungen und die daraus resultierenden musikalischen Ergebnisse miteinander verwebt. Dem Konzept einer musikalischen Reise folgend fasziniert Esa seine Zuhörer und lädt sie ein, ihn zu begleiten, wenn er im Studio oder auf der Tanzfläche Außergewöhnliches kreiert.
