BRAILLED: MUTANT JOE 2021

This mix was somewhat of a departure from my typical live mixes in its arrangement/ tonal considerations. Having developed a slight cynicism towards the current direction of dance music, I chose tracks with little to no regard for genre or BPM, focusing more on tone and intensity. While there are a couple of danceable moments, it’s definitely hard to call this a ‘dance mix’, but more so a collection of tracks that explore the deconstruction of genre and my hopes for the direction of electronic music in the future.

Brisbane's Mutant Joe brought an exceptional selection of narly beats to the Rhythmic Culture podcast. His unique sound brings together street electronics, underground rap, trap, gabber, electro and jungle into an unclasssificable whole – one which pushes against the grain of contemporary music and taps into the unease and anxiety of living in a world on the brink of political and ecological collapse.

This week's mix is just exactly all of that and not for the faint-hearted. A thrilling hour through a shadowy world of grit and grime that pulls you in without even noticing.

Mutant Joe is a 22 year old producer and DJ from Brisbane, Australia, now based in Berlin.

Mutant Joe’s genreless approach draws together styles from jungle to baile funk to Southern US trap by foregrounding bass-heavy, distorted beats and pulling at the threads of pitch-black gothic horror that run through his disparate influences.

The anonymous Australian producer first made waves with a pair of releases on UK label Natural Sciences, Home Invasion Anthems and Operation Chaos. A prolific collaborator, early releases included collaborations with like-minded producers and rappers like Freddie Dredd, TRiPPJONES and Lord Pusswhip. 

In his first few years on the scene, Mutant Joe quickly caught the attention of publications like FACT Mag, Dummy and XLR8R, as well as producers like TNGHT (Hudson Mohawke & Lunice), who included multiple tracks from Home Invasion Anthems in their BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix at the end of 2019.

Mutant Joe carries serious momentum on his arrival at EVAR HQ, off the back of a series of EP’s, singles and a second full-length, 2021’s Dream Corrupter. That record saw him turn away from the Southern rap indebted sound that was his early trademark, and embrace an unclassifiable and borderless kind of club music that touched on baile funk, UKG, dancehall and myriad styles in between. 

An unpredictable talent whose experimental streak shows no signs of fading, Mutant Joe’s shapeshifting approach has made him one of Australia’s most exciting new producers.

Aye!! Young Mutant Joe (@mutantjoe) is a 20 years old producer from Brisbane, Australia. Making his debut with album “Home Invasion Anthems” on Manchester label @NaturalSciences a few months ago, Mutant Joe peels back societies accepted norms and values, kicking down the door of the family next door armed with razor wire, bondage tape, police transmitters and overt torture tactics. 

He has collaborated with big names such as @FreddieDredd or Lord Pusswhip, and is definitely earning the respect of firms as FACT or Inverted Audio, caughting the eye of TNGHT (Hudson Mohawk x Lunice) who dropped four tracks from him in their BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix at the tail end of 2019.
