081 - Unrushed by Jo Johnson

This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show places a spotlight on Rotterdam and the influential record label, store and distributor @clone-nl.

Founded by @sergeclone, Clone launched in 1992 with the EP “Coördinated Sounds & Sequences," under Serge’s moniker Orx. 

What began as a platform for Serge’s own music and his friends’ has grown into a worldwide operation, with Clone’s current roster of artists including Finland’s Aleksi Perälä, Germany’s Roman Flügel, and Legowelt from The Netherlands, as well as Detroit’s Drexciya, The Other People Place, and Der Zyklus. Under Clone Records are also several sub labels including  Basement Series, Royal Oak, and Clone Jack for Daze.

In 1995, Serge launched Clone the record store, as well as its distribution arm, which specializes in electronic music, original soundtracks, jazz, funk, and Italo disco from a variety of international labels. 

For this episode of Carhartt WIP Radio, Serge offers an insight into Clone with a mix featuring tracks from its most recent catalog, while paying tribute to the birthplace of techno – Detroit.

Italian label-head, radio host and DJ Elena Colombi has been holding it down on platforms like NTS and stages like Dekmantel for close to up to a decade. Their ear for the out there crossings of experimental, industrial and techno sounds is truly next to none. Not only does this show their skills on how to blend these styles to accuracy world wide but reflects on the music they pick for their excellent Osàre! Editions imprint since 2019. "The two most powerful warriors are patience and time.”, one well-known writer once said. And for the new Birds entry, I welcome @philipp-otterbach, long-time record collector of all kinds of music, DJ and producer, who would approve his words. For a long while he devotes himself with endurance to music. During the 2000s, he threw some forward-looking dances with his old buddy Vladimir Ivkovic in the German Ruhr region. And when Düsseldorf’s shrine for outer-national grooves Salon Des Amateurs opened in 2004, Otterbach became a one of the first residents. Since 2014 he is also out there with his very own sound, releasing EPs on labels like adventurous Dutch Knekelhuis, Themes for Great Cities, Brokntoys etc. In 2020 he dropped his debut album 'Everything Else Matters' on R.I.O.  followed by "The Dahlem Diaries" on Music From Memory Nowadays (2023) and "Correct me if I am incorrectly you" on Offen (2023). Listening to one of Philipp's DJ sets is like shuffling through an imaginary library. His musical language follows an intertwined logic of emotional affects, ineffable magic and endless fantasy. A man for suspenseful storytelling that likes to melt early electronic music, Krautrock, minimalism, and all sorts of tribal rhythms with eclectic voodoo dance, psychedelic guitar tsunami’s, house, techno and electro - always beautifully entangled with a precise feeling for special funk dynamics. This one is another great example of these antics too. Let the mind fly with the birds!
