New year, new sounds! Introducing Truancy Sessions, our latest mix series dedicated to elevating the underground music scene. With eight episodes per season, we'll be looking to amplify the voices of emerging DJs and longtime Truants friends, all while collaborating with talented designers and artists. Our mission is to cultivate connections and celebrate people with an ear for music from every corner of the globe, be it people we've seen on our travels to friends we've made at festivals and clubs. For our first season, we'll be collaborating with the exceptional designer Kushagra for all things artwork, and for our debut episode we have a seamless blend of mesmerizing grooves from San Francisco-based suade (@whoissuade) for a transportive musical experience. Here's a glimpse into what suade has in store:

"This mix is a cruise through some records I know I’ll love forever - rolling, percussive, driving, and euphoric sounds. Put it on for a nice drive, a long run, getting ready for a party, or maybe just to hype up your work day. I spend a lot of time in the shapeshifting, hyperactive world of bass-driven music and I have an equal love for timeless grooves, long blends, and dreamy sounds. Sometimes these feel like mutually exclusive worlds as a DJ. The latter is what I’m reaching for these days, in a slow and reflective period of my life, and what I bring to the mix. It consists mainly of records from the mid 90s to early 2000s with some newer releases sprinkled in there. I decided to avoid maximalism and opt for a steady ride through a few key ideas. I’ve been wanting to record something like this for a while, so I’m super grateful and happy to be sharing it here. I hope this hour and twenty four minutes locks you in and is something you can come back to. Enjoy"

wav.world emerged out of a long-running chat exchange of mixes, tracks, and some playful speculation: If you were going to make a platform for DJ mixes in 2024, what would it look like?

Mixes are a unique type of musical expression. They capture a specific moment in time, determined by the knowledge and style of the artist. A mix is as important a creative statement as an album, remix or EP. One mix can change an artist’s career, one mix can open a listener’s mind to something completely new.

𝔂𝓸𝓾𝓻 𝓯𝓪𝓿𝓸𝓻𝓲𝓽𝓮 𝓶𝓲𝔁𝓮𝓼 𝓪𝓻𝓮 𝓽𝓲𝓶𝓮𝓵𝓮𝓼𝓼.

We miss the importance that mixes used to have. So, we made a platform for mixes.

Each wav.world mix gives one artist the time and resources to create whatever kind of mix they want, to share something sonic about who they are and what they love.

Every wav.world mix will feature a longform interview with the artist which gets to the heart of what moves them—in music and in life—through text, video and image. Each edition of wav.world will feature the commissioned work of music journalists, visual artists and graphic artists.

Presenting the lovely @sun_drine for #151, a Swiss native I came across a while back deep in a soundcloud dig - I was quickly drawn in by her mesmerising, organic narrative building & warmth filled mixes.

Co-founder of all-female collective Töchter, she grew up in the Swiss Alps & now resides in Bern.Her sets are hypnotic, surprising & introspective, a lovely reflection of her passionate approach to the craft.

Italian label-head, radio host and DJ Elena Colombi has been holding it down on platforms like NTS and stages like Dekmantel for close to up to a decade. Their ear for the out there crossings of experimental, industrial and techno sounds is truly next to none. Not only does this show their skills on how to blend these styles to accuracy world wide but reflects on the music they pick for their excellent Osàre! Editions imprint since 2019. "Chicago native Justin Aulis Long discovered his fascination for uncanny music at an early age when his mother entrusted him with her record collection that spanned from UK punk to American dance. This  served as a gateway, stimulating his journey into the sonic vortex. As a child of Medusa’s on Sheffield, Long gained a higher level of musical education. His weekly pilgrimages to this venue’s all-ages hedonistic dance parties supplied a compelling musical concoction of acid house, UK bleep, industrial and new wave. Possessed by these unorthodox forms of music, Long purchased his first set of turntables and began to collect 12-inch singles from local record shops. Though his intentions were solely to pander to his musical appetite in the privacy of his bedroom, this acquisition proved to be the genesis of a voyage that continues to present him with new challenges that are met with an unforgiving dogmatic approach.

Long cut his teeth during the early 90’s at many of Chicagos Infamous DIY and underground warehouse raves. pulling selections from a variety of his musical influences and interests. Eventually graduating to take residencies at many of the cities established club venues and landing a residency at Smart Bar where he is currently the longest consecutive resident."

There is nothing ordinary about Sepehr (@sepehr-a): he hails from the Bay Area of San Fran, is based in New York City but has Iranian heritage and takes great pleasure in pulling apart everything you think you know about dance music. His maverick approach results in versatile and genre-defiant sounds that collide EBM, drum & bass, techno, electro, acid and plenty more on some of the finest labels out there. He runs his own Shaytoon Records which is focussed on the Middle Eastern underground, and in May lands on our own Dekmanel Records with Genesis Domain, a varied EP full of intriguing sounds.

The same could be said of his mix for us this week. It's a deep dive into his eclectic and eccentric musical mind that spans several sounds and scenes. Although united by body-moving rhythms, there is everything from club to techno to broken beat and plenty more besides. Each track is packed with detail and surrealist sounds that will keep your head as busy as your heels.
