Despite it technically being mid-summer in June (not August), this Garden was a belter.  There was a RiteTrax festival on at the Bolehills during the day and when that finished the hordes descended on the Hallamshire making it one of the busiest yet.  I had an early evening set and played some deep Techno with a splash of trance at the end, enjoy!

PL: Piotr Figiel - producent muzyczny, live performer i DJ z Krakowa. Redaktor audycji „Essentia Electronica” w Off Radio Kraków, w której to często gości Wyroby Technopodobne. W swojej twórczości skupia się na brzmieniach z pogranicza techno i IDM. Dla nas nagrał set DJ'ski wypełniony melodyjnymi i minimalowymi utworami.  Wieczorami lubi poczytać dobrą książkę, przy dźwiękach Moderata.

EN: Piotr Figiel - music producer, live performer and DJ from Krakow. Editor of the "Essentia Electronica" - program at Off Radio Krakow, in which he often hosts Us. In his work, he is focuses on sounds of techno and IDM. For us, he recorded a DJ set filled with melodic and minimal trax. In the evenings he likes to read a good book while listening to Moderat.

Since 2010, mostly on sad sundays, we have been sharing DJ mixes and now have reached our 200th edition with the spontaneous anniversary mix by JD J, Nika J and Vakho. Recording is taken from the Vodkast night in wonderful Ciskari sometime in August, 2019. Its a compilation of different songs, grooves and melodies which have been with us for a long time now...

Dj Zurkin joins Mutant Radio with his new show called Natural Selection. Every month he will showcase different musical angles, thus, the topics for each episode will vary.
The first episode is all about bargain bin music. Zurkin will play some records from his collection that cost him 1$ or less. The mix aims to demonstrate that even for a small amount of money it is possible to buy some amazing music that will move dancefloors all over the world. His advice might especially come in handy at times like these, as everybody is on a tight budget now.

New monthly show, Soul Glo curated by Vakho – a disc jockey and music collector from Vodkast Records.

It’s a mix starting with the mid 70s library music by Gianni Safred, exotic synth sounds from Japan by Hiroshi Sato, superb funk-soul-jazz by Atlas, Tomorrow’s People and Billy Jones & the Stars, further transcending into mid 80s Zouk by Jacob F. Desvarieux and late 60s Samba by Ely Camargo, continued by nice disco-funk from the Mystery Kindaichi Band and finishes off with beautiful UK neo-soul by Special Touch from 1991. Newer music is spread across the mix from a great highlife/folk album of 2019 by Isaac Birituro & the Rail Abandon, the unique Tony Allen Experiments by Nu Guinea from 2016 and Lipelis’s heart warming version of Hypnolov’s Plexus from 2019.

Out Of Whack. w JD J [07.05.2020]

For the second edition of Soul Glo that explores African grooves and songs. It starts with the electric futuristic intro by Francis Bebey, a pioneer of electronic music in Cameroon and continues with newer brass music by Obadikah, a band from Lagos, Nigeria. The third track is by Brooklyn based afrobeat band Antibalas, which I have been following since their first album of 2000. Next one is a powerful electronic funk from a self released album of William Onyeabor, Nigerian extraordinary artist and visionary who recorded and self released 9 brilliant albums in 1977-1985. The mix continues with an all female Brooklyn afrobeat band Toli and the Femm Nameless demo recording from 2003. Followed by Francis the Great from 1977 having remarkable vocals by a 7 year old boy backed by afro-funk musicians from Cameroon and France. The mix further travels back to Nigeria with a one off studio project of 1978 called Keyboard and formed by Brodricks Majuwa and Isaac Digha. The journey continues with magnificent Manu Dibango fusing jazz, funk and traditional Cameroonian music. Closer to the end the mix features afro funk gem by Eno Louis, South African bubblegum disco by Umoja 707 and instrumental kwaito track by the Equals. The last track is by Zambian rock band Amanaz from 1973.

ახალი იმაში არაფერია, თუ ვიტყვით, რომ 90-იანი წლები ელექტრონულ მუსიკაში განსაკუთრებულ პერიოდად მოიაზრება. თუმცა, არის ამ დროის საინტერესო მუსიკალური სცენა, რომელიც სხვა ქვეყნების ჩრდილში მოექცა და ბევრისგან საკმაოდ უყურადღებოდაც დარჩა — ეს კანადა გახლავთ. დღევანდელ გადაცემაში ზურკინი მის რჩეულ 90-იანი წლების კანადურ საცეკვაო მუსიკას მოგვასმენინებს და მათ შესახებ საინტერესო ფაქტებსაც გაგვიზიარებს.

It comes as no surprise that 90’s in electronic dance music was a golden age, but there’s a scene of that era that is overlooked by many - and it belongs to Canada. In today’s Natural Selection Zurkin will provide us with some of his favorite Canadian gems from the 90’s and tell us interesting facts about them.

Renata Do Valle (@hellosailornyc) was born on an idyllic island in the south of Brazil but is now based in Brooklyn, New York. Her vast music collection reflects the heritage of both places but largely draws on Brazilian sounds, be that samba, MPB, electro or soul. She also expertly curates her own Hello Sailor label and has a knack for transporting you from Brooklyn to Bahia and back again whenever she plays one of her expressive and eclectic sets.

This week's colourful selection is one packed with familiar cornerstones like electro, disco and house, but all reimagined through a Latin lens and served up with plenty of South American flair. Joining the dots between the old and the new, the classic and the unknown, it's a steamy and sunny mix that is perfect for parties inside, outside, online or in your headphones. It's such a sweet and full flavour mix that when it's playing you can almost taste the caipirinhas on your lips.
