Relentless and heavy dark electronic beats mingle with anger and anguish on Liliane Chlela’s latest album “Safala”. The Lebanese producer and hybrid DJ tapped into her personal memories to bring forth a sonic concoction anchored in the inherited oral epistemologies of her ancestors. Memories intertwine with Beirut, using incantations inherited from Chlela’s grandmother as building blocks to build an eight track album. From warding off the evil eye to protest sounds from the past year of events in Lebanon, the album haunts the listener to invoke a striking elegy on terror and anger, while inducing a rollercoaster of sonic eruptions.

Most of the sound palette was organically produced to mimic the remains of situations during which Chlela’s sonic memory aligned with the ‘keywords’ from the aforementioned incantations.

Token celebrates its 100th release with Luke Slater, a legend of the genre, releasing under one of his most iconic aliases: Planetary Assault Systems. For over 25 years, Slater has delivered unparalleled quality in his music - a formative figure in Techno and instrumental in defining the sound globally, few can touch the Brit for depth, urgency and hit rate.

Exhibiting near enough perfect renditions of classic dance-floor moods, the four track EP is a wrought iron rollercoaster through some of the artist’s most exacting work. Booming opener Bang Wap chugs unrelentingly while a lithe FX line does the bulk of the movement in the high mid range - building tension before a satisfying release in the last quarter. A2 Bolt is classic Planetary Assault Systems - hypnotic and driving with a single sequence dipping in and out of view. On the flip, Say It Loud could be an idiosyncratic hit waiting to happen - dry and tight in the drum department for maximum effect, and featuring a recurring vocal sample chopped and skewed for tension. Closer Shine takes a deeper, more psychedelic route with shades of the classic, jacking Detroit sound in the pitch bent lead line, but maintains the energy throughout with stylish delay sends upping the ante where required, all in all delivering a neat finish to the EP.

If you know anything about Big Tech, you know disruption’s the name of the game. For some reason, we’re betting that this applies to techno too, and we feel the latest EP from Cora Novoa is a game-changer on the scale of Windows Vista. 

Hot off appearing on the cover of of Mixmag Spain (beating out Spanish Steve Aoki for the honor), the Barcelona-based producer, creative director and researcher follows up her killer 2020 Twin Turbo release, Black Out, with Two Faces, which cements her place as one of the major artists populating today’s techno landscape, which itself is made of cement. These five massive tracks evoke the deep space claustrophobia of consumer-grade interplanetary travel, exporting our emotional intelligence and expert playlist curation to grateful distant worlds. This is the sound of the logical endpoint of all rave culture, where DJs will be replaced by an app you beg to not cut the oxygen. 

Two Faces is packaged with a custom Instagram face filter, which satisfies a longtime mandate from label management to make our audience better-looking. Turbo will also be producing a T-shirt for the release, aimed at those who dare to walk between two worlds, navigating the virtual/analog divide with the grace and artistry of a tightrope dancer. The EP also marks the occasion of Turbo’s first NFT, a combination of the face filter and artwork. Sold on Foundation, it will instantly become the least fungible thing you will ever own, and a possible bargaining chip to offer the AI that’s been blackmailing you. Please note that Tiga is under the impression that NFTs are pronounced “Nifty’s” so do not try to disabuse him of this notion the next time he’s in your town to tear up a local street festival. Die Orakel long time collaborator @edward gracefully reappears with a three track emission called Time Stretch. Edward’s appliance of the titular technique is not restricted to various sonic elements at all, as it extends to the tracks’ mental notes and their trajectories beyond the digital realm. 

Time Stretch fills the entire side A with vibrant sonic elements, a warm bassline along an eerie pad, all on top of a straight and punchy bass drum. La Grotta’s signature melody, plus chirps and cowbells, inject a slight touch of exotica to the musical meta-data, while time stretch artefacts refer back to a befittingly themed EP. Finally, the undercurrents of Black Sea evolve along a modulated melodic pad, a pulsating bass and beat structure, and a light 90s IDM morse figure on top of frequency sweeps.

Canadian born, Berlin based producer @Aquarian debuts on Dekmantel Records’ UFO imprint with Mutations I & II, a series of two EPs following his debut album The Snake That Eats Itself and his collaborative records as AQXDM. The series marks his return to club focused solo material for the first time since 2017.

Originally written as inflection points for his typically boisterous and genre collapsing dj sets, Mutations deftly splices the foundational DNA of his earliest productions — electro, hardcore and broken beat techno – with new and vital influences.

Mutations I: Death, Taxes and Hanger finds Aquarian gleefully contorting mid-2000s dnb tearouts, wrong footed IDM and progressive trance euphoria into thrilling new shapes. Fast techno, hi-tek jazz, amphetamine-addled filter house and breakcore join the fray in Mutations II: Delicious Intent as he pushes intensity levels past breaking point. Whichever the touchstone, the results are clear: distinctly modern, highly-propulsive body music with an unapologetically emotive core.

Powder is an alchemist of time. Her ceremonious DJ sets invite listeners and dancers to extend their imaginations to abstracted spaces, while allowing the body to vessel the voyage in free, flowing style. Playful, thoughtful, and natural without knowing, Powder’s crates encourage abandonment of arbitrary boundaries and expectations surrounding genre, movement, schedule, and societal convention to revel, spirited and harmonious, in the passage of time.

Since her debut release on Born Free Records, 2015’s Spray, Powder’s sound has flirted with numerous unconventional dance institutions and outlets, releasing on ESP Institute, Wichelroede and the Cocktail D’amore imprint, as well as regularly contributing to the latter’s illustrious mega parties. For her Powder in Space mix, Moko presents two new songs that were created within a new schedule, with summers spent touring Europe and North America, welcoming the unique experiences offered by each location.

The first single from Loraine James' new album 'Reflection' is a solo introduction and a reset. It's a direct song called Simple Stuff vocalled directly and diaristically by Loraine, a minimal, gentle plea to be treated equally (as a black, queer woman) over criss-crossing drums. Loraine's vocals dissolve into distortion and fx's as if they are getting lost and then heard again.
