On his EPs Abstractions and Have Faith, Wu Wei established himself as and artists that likes the ethereal as music as he likes dance beats. 2014 has been a busy year for him performing at west coast festivals, street fairs and even holding it down along with an all-star lineup at Sacred Spaces camp at Burning Man.

On Syncretic, Wu Wei holds onto some of his ethereal and uplifting influences. His use of field recordings and found sound are also evident while at the same time displaying an ability to move into some newer directions of psychedelic dub as well as having tunes like Sun Soaked, Gift Of Loss and Icarus, seeming to reflect back to artists like Sabres of Paradise. This all culminates into some of the most delightful  electronic chillout music we’ve heard. For fans of Desert Dwellers, Dub Kirtan, Shen, Birds Of Paradise, Kalya Scintilla, XXYYXX, OnHell, Hypha, Sabres of Paradise and others.

Wu Wei, a name derived from the Taoist path of non-action, has tapped into a universal song and brought its melodies into the physical realm. The result is a uniquely unifying effect, transcending language and cultural identity to remind the rest of humanity of their fundamental unity. The 21-year-old Los Angeles to Humboldt County transplant has spent his recent years perfecting his attenuation to the rhythms of the natural world creating intentional music to bring the planet together. He strives to combine the soul reaching sounds of ambient IDM together with the earthy bass of futuristic world hip-hop.

With "Swimming Pool", Spoq releases a new mind bending cinematic album. This work manages to combine warm, intimate, introverted acoustic instruments and melodies, with analogue basses, glitches, fat beats and sometimes even disharmonic, aggressive sounds. This is not at home in one genre, but rather draws chill hop, trip hop and ambient vibes just to juxtapose them with cinematic IDM and sometimes even Synth Wave and Drum'n'Bass elements. Spoq's very specific sound is very present in this album. It can maybe be described as shattering a symphonic orchestra together with vinyl crates and a bunch of broken synths, only to search for the most fragile shards and most solid pieces at the same time to puzzle together something completely new.

Even though it is an instrumental album, the themes behind "Swimming Pool" have a great emotional depth. Writer and producer Wolfram Gruss describes it as a very personal meditative musical reflection on what it means to be human: "A public swimming pool is a sort of microcosm, where for a short time we become the same. We jump in the water to swim, cool off, play, exercise or recreate. It does not matter where you come from, how you have gotten there, what your story is, what you own...everyone is just keeping their heads above the water. At the same time we become vulnerable as our bodies are exposed, the flaws and scars we rather keep covered up might show, our worries, problems and pains are waiting for us as soon as we leave the water. This is exactly the ambivalence I wanted to express with the title track. It is slow, relaxing, almost corny at times, but at the same time probably the saddest and heaviest piece of music I've ever created."
Whether you follow this thought process or not, "Swimming Pool" is definitely an album for connaisseurs looking for unusual and uniquely deep electronic music.

Muti  Music = Medicine Music.
In South African English, the word "muti" is used to refer to all sorts of herbal medicine. It is derived from the Zulu/Xhosa word umuthi, meaning "tree," whose root is -thi. In Southern Africa, "muti" and cognates of umuthi are in widespread use in most indigenous African languages as well as in South African English and Afrikaans, which sometimes use "muti" as a slang word for medicine in general, or even as a term for 'good luck'.
