VIMES - Hopeful (Panthera Krause Remix)

It’s been two years since Stefan Z last released on this label, but the three tracks he serves up prove the wait has been more than worth it.

The Berlin based Canadian is the boss of the Rhombus label and is a top electronic production talent. He makes his sounds stand out with slick vocals or moving melodic elements, most likely because of his formally trained piano and trumpet playing skills. He’s had support from the likes of Sasha, Solomun and Adriatique, and his label parties in Vancouver were key in developing the city’s underground scene.

The super title track goes first and is a freaky number with spacecraft circling the groove, building tension in the melodic riffs and futurism in the drums. It’s a dramatic track with heavy, lumpy kicks and one to jolt the floor into action.

‘Borni’ is another long and involving tune, this time with more mystery and suspense in the way it builds. The drums get you marching as synths and ghoulish motifs pan about to creepy effect. It’s a real set building track that keeps you on edge.

Lastly, ‘Cipe’ is the toughest of the lot, with stiff hits and withering cosmic chords speaking of an intergalactic war. Underpinned by warm bass, it’s a widescreen cinematic affair with real beauty in the pads that eventually take over the show.

All three tracks here are mini epics that really take you on a trip.

Stefan Z - Borni

My Favorite Robot’s final EP of 2017 comes from Entschuldigung, and is a suitably impressive offering to end another fine year.

Entschuldigung is an exciting collaboration between two musicians from the electro pop music world, namely French house pioneer Guillaume Atlan & Stephane-Lebenson. They love old school pop and minimal retro sounds and use vintage drum machines to craft their productions as showcased on their well-received last single ‘Gina Cecello’, which dropped earlier this year.

Their first superb single here ‘Lekeleu’ is five fresh minutes of slippery electro. With dehumanised vocals stitched into the groove and sci-fi synths darting about, it is full of energy and futurism. Always on the move and encouraging you to be the same, it is the sort of track to electrify any club.

The fantastic ‘Farenheit’ is a slower, more edgy affair with darker drums. Gurgling bass and arpeggiated chords bring an intergalactic feel and keep you on your toes until they resolve and the kicks carry you away. It’s a bright, shiny affair with a pumping groove and great sense of melody.

These are two tasteful tracks that prove Entschuldigung are all set for a huge year in 2018.

It’s that time again… Every summer Jennifer Cardini’s Correspondant imprint celebrates another ground-breaking year with a far-reaching collection.

Ranging from palpitating ambience to chuggernaut technoid trips; the stirring 16 track set features late night creations from old friends (Red Axes, Zombies In Miami, Mike Simonetti, Moscoman) new friends (Simple Symmetry, Perel, Julian Stetter, ) and friends that have been Correspondant kindred spirits since day one, but have never had the opportunity to cast their magic on the label… Until now (Black Merlin, The Golden Filter, MR TC, Yula Kasp & Mi.ro).

As always, the vibe is deep, smoldering, emotive, innovative and unapologetically cosmic as we’re pushed headfirst into Correspondant’s boundary-less soundscape. From the coiled spring funk of Javi Redondo’s ‘Fictional Friendship’ to the hypnotic harmonics and trippy vocal textures of Uriah Klapter’s ‘Breeze’ via the slinky arpeggiated charm of Marvin & Guy’s ‘Cowboy Disco’, it’s another sublime excursion from one of the most consistent and considered imprints on the left side of techno.

Frankey & Sandrino have been staples on labels like Innervisions, Mule Musiq and Drumpoet Community since their partnership first yielded fresh fruits back in 2010.  Delicate electronics bubble, and icy melodies float over ‘Mira’s spacey aura, bringing together elements of 90s IDM and minimal techno in a refreshing way.  On ‘Naos’, a chugging groove and Italo inspired bassline unfolds to expose a transcendental lead line and a cosmic semblance that’s as infectious as it is irresistible.  

Cin Cin founder, Fort Romeau, delivers two cuts on home turf, teaming up with Jas Shaw (one half of Brit electronic duo, Simian Mobile Disco, and currently releasing solo material as part of his Exquisite Cops series) for a brace of deep, intergalactic tracks.  ‘Saturn Ascends’ is a space age, acid romance, whilst ‘Voices [no.III]’ offers up a more spirited piece, with lively percussion and a flitting tonal riff that is teased and tweaked through the space echo for good measure.

These 2 new exciting original cuts are filled with inter-planetary bleeps and grandiose pads, that along with remixes from Marvin & Guy and Bird Of Paradise make an outstanding pack for the late-night record spinner. The trip starts with “Confucius Says”, where a mystical, astral melody synth carries us along with a muffled Italo bass, as if we were traveling across a dense nebulae of sound on board of a retro-futuristic spaceship piloted by small green mysterious creatures on glittering space suits. Bird of Paradise takes this to paranoiac territories: an insistent, rolling bass makes us realise that moment where we have landed in a strange, remote planet, while danger seems just ahead us. 

“Operation Oskar Panizza”, the second original track, prepares us for battle. The snare-propelled-guitars are our weapons against the fatigue derived by a night full of wonders and chuggy basslines. At the end of the expedition, Marvin & Guy brilliantly push us into a new arpeggiated journey, right into the middle of the after-hours galaxy.
