This mix is something I’ve been thinking about for a while - the reemergence of low end psychedelia. I call it a reemergence as I feel like it could be linked to the trippy side of dubstep with the likes of Skull Disco and that sound coming back but on a much broader scale. I spoke about it in an interview recently as something I’ve become obsessed with, in particular this year, and I don’t really see any platforms covering it or trying to encapsulate this really exciting musical movement. Low end psychedelia can range from techno, trance, drum & bass, dubstep and more but the through line is this deep, trippy soundscape. The mix I’ve created highlights this push and pull between the slow/fast side of this sound where it ranges from 85 to 170 bpm, weaving through spacey, swampy and wonked-out techno, drum & bass and IDM. Something that’s worth mentioning is that a lot of the artists who are coming through in this scene are based in France, most notably Lyon and that’s what I want to write about and get to the bottom of, what’s the history there and what’s going on in France right now that’s influencing this movement. Some artists and labels to shout out include Christian Coiffure, Vardae, Comic Sans Records, SousTraitance, Beatrice M., Hewan Aman, Blue Night Jungle, Monochrome Records, sindh, kick21, minú jr and many more!

Ambient music was really my saviour during lockdown. I was going through my first heartbreak and living in a different country, which I moved to 6 months before the lockdown happened. There was no escaping your feelings during this time, you had to face them head on, as soon as they appeared, so I started building these playlists filled with ambient music as a way of giving myself some headspace during particularly tricky times. Or they would be what I would listen to on my ‘sanity walks’, something I still make sure I do everyday. I have such an emotional connection to this music and there was one really tough Christmas period where I decided to turn these playlists into the sounds of healing mix series - the first edition is literally the first ever playlist I made during this time and the Refuge Worldwide show was an extension of that, showing other strings of ambient music that might not necessarily fit within the ‘healing’ theme. Stating the obvious here but music is a really powerful tool for addressing emotions and this was my way of connecting with that.

A long time coming, this new chapter in our Podcast Series comes from our dear friend and one of our favourite live artists, dan nicholls. We’d have a hard time counting exactly how many times we’ve seen them concoct their colourful sonic potions, effortlessly merging multi-layered depth with soft playfulness, oscillating between meditative horizontal sounds, spoken word and field recordings and high energy bass infected half & double time dance workouts. To witness an artist in pursuit of their genuine expression succeed in building a world of their own while being versatile and open is a beautiful thing to behold and we feel so lucky to be able to share this little peek into Dan’s workshop, in the form a live set recording from Brussels’ Brasserie Atlas ✨

dan nicholls is a producer and multi-instrumentalist exploring sounds at the crossroads of ambient, electronica, jazz and free improvisation. Over the years, Dan has moved on from a career in jazz, via electronic music, to a heartfelt embrace of rave culture and the feminist and queer theories which are all strongly present in the current iteration of their solo projects and collaborations. With a powerful grasp on world building with, through and beyond sound, they co-curate the London-based Free Movements - a multi-sensory event series hosting genre fluid experimental music performances crossing both acoustic and electronic realms 🔮

In the true spirit of their highly collaborative workflow ~ always in the process of making with and through people and other-than-human critters, culture & politics ~ this improvised recording features voices of tyroneisaacstewart, Lauren Kinsella, Juju Love, Moor Mother, Gillie Nicholls, Janet Blake and Palestinian activist whose words contribute in different ways to amplifying of marginalised ideas. And it seems that for every word, there is a sound to match, a little something that carries its weight, gives it a warm embrace and lets it slip in our ears with tenderness and gravity to be remembered through feeling. There’s only one way to know and that’s to press play and listen 🐚

It is not easy to find Saphira, and it is even harder to leave. If it so chooses, the city will appear first as a quivering mirage on the horizon, second as a blinding stone mirror, and third as a sprawling maze whose sounds and sensations embrace the traveler in a slow and languid frenzy. Quite famously, it is home to countless locked eyes and spellbound hearts. It is a place whose deep currents of longing, like the sound of its ocean shore, seem to rumble and hiss under the surface of every word and gesture, in every bead of sweat that blooms from the glimmering skin of its people.

Saphira is at all times caught between a low-lying sun to the west and a glowing moon to the east. They hang above the skyline with an eerie stillness, watching the city’s tireless creatures writhe together in tenderness and sin, casting upon them a pale, silvery gold light that hangs heavy in the humid air. It is in the tension of this peculiar light and its slender, tangled shadows that Saphira’s longing grows dense and time thickens within its walls. Traveler and resident alike are suspended in an endless eros, caught tightly between pain and pleasure, between the sting of saltwater in one’s eyes and the sticky sweetness of ripe fruit on one’s lips. 

Perhaps this is why Saphira’s radios and televisions stutter with phrases and images so ghostly yet so intimately familiar, why its dusty buildings seem always to crumble so gloriously yet never collapse, why around every corner there is a street that so closely resembles one of a distant and loving memory, and why the curling flakes of paint on its walls and facades will reach out against the heat without fading or falling. It is a city inside of want and outside of time.
