In greek mythology the titan Mnemosyne (Μνημοσύνη) is the personification of memory and mother of the Muses. This new series of archival sonic mixes wants to celebrate Memory, as it covers the most important role in creativity, progress and life itself.
By presenting a different vision of it on each episode, participants will distill memories and ideas that formed their projects, using a variety of audio materials, ranging from finished songs to extracts of performances and jam sessions, to interviews and field recordings, and so on, to create a sonic self portrait.

With an attraction towards storytelling, imperfection and out of control  scenarios, placa's compositions aim to take the listener to concrete places and ephemeral situations with field recordings as its cornerstone. Archiving moments, as if clips were filmed and stored for future reference. 

 "kyo-ka" for Mnemosyne is the sound map of a trip to Japan in late 2019. 

"What was a crucial sound experience in your life?"
When I first listened to my first field recordings with studio headphones I was shocked by the power they had to take me to specific moments and places in life instantly. Even if some years have passed by, they still hold that super power. It is also fascinating how, every time I listen to them, I hear new details and new strong connections are built. The micro macro perception when listening to field recordings has really influenced the way I listen to my everyday context.

MNEMOSYNE #043 - FELDERMELDER

https://soundcloud.com/thisismartenot, pseudonym of Simone Gottardi, is an Italian electronic music composer, based in Turin. His compositions, exclusively computer-based, are founded on a minimal vocabulary and instrumental apparatus and, aiming to exploit the entire musical spectrum, they orbit around a solid sound body, which has as its main source a monophonic synthesizer that he developed in Max/ MSP and gives a precise timbre direction with radical aesthetic constraints. The feature that unites his tracks is the dichotomous alternation of claustrophobic patterns that evoke the rigid molecular structures of plastic materials in contrast to freer and more irregular sections where the musical fabric dissolves and opens up to airy and rarefied scenarios.
Martenot launches his own collective and curatorial project called https://soundcloud.com/neanche-per-sogno-records publishing his debut EP called Sfilate Spaziali in September 2022.

“What was a crucial sound experience in your life?”
The experience that changed me first as a listener and then as a composer was when, studying John Cage during my first class in composition of concrete music at the Conservatory of Trento, I was asked to use poor common objects not traditionally conceived as musical instruments, considering any noise produced as a potential vehicle of musical meaning. The result was awful, but it opened me up to sound in all its facets.

" Missing Ear", a key concept in this project, and interpreted by the artist as the awareness of the listener to actively understand the music in its genuine and purest form. In this way, the act of listening becomes an act of protest against the overstimulation displayed in the digital world. Following this principle, our sound perception is at the core of the creative process, working as a processing tool, and turning itself into the very same instrument.
Matteo’s sonic quest straddles futuristic landscapes enclosed in a post-natural aesthetic, where ambient sounds meet noises and break-glitch rhythms. His main influences span from the harsh experimentations of artists like Objekt, Atom, Autechre to the fine drum work of Steve Gadd and the abstract and fluid sounds of Lee Gamble and Boards of Canada.

“What was a crucial sound experience in your life?”
The crucial experience that I'm still hearing every day has an exact name: Tinnitus (in Italiano it's called "Acufene")
I can definitely say that this situation changed my mind... not because I struggle against that (or so and so) but because that begins me really next to some problems that we every day live.
First of all the noise pollution, the inability to listen, and thus also the way listening has changed. I'll speak about this very soon in a paper that I'll release with Mille Plateaux. I hope this has piqued your curiosity.

Alma G. Ferrer ‘Mim’ is a culture curator and music storyteller based in Mexico. https://soundcloud.com/mitaminelab, a contemporary sound archive and curatorial project, is one of her outstanding artistic projects. She also works with cultural and artistic projects doing art production and project management. Mim explores the articulation of networks of exchange, collaboration and hospitality through sound, contemporary music, digital archives and radio;  she’s currently exploring new forms of therapy with ancestral medicine, painting and mixed media.

“What was a crucial sound experience in your life?” 
Being a hypersensitive person has been pretty extreme sometimes, I always get mad and anxious with some sounds —like hearing another person chewing or car klaxons and traffic— so music has been always my comfort zone and shelter. Of course living in a city is kinda complex but I truly enjoy the urban sound experiences related with soundscapes of specific spaces and in general with ‘natural’ sound culture (or aural culture).

Ian Rodriguez is an artist, producer, and composer. His work as Lorica (and previously as Avbvrn) filters a surgical attention to detail and sound design through a wide-scope approach to atmosphere and the spatial qualities of music. The resulting works conjure up dramatic, vivid, and tactile sonic landscapes that recall classical forms and techniques, while drawing upon contemporary textures and approaches to rhythm and memory. His sound, video, performance, and visual works highlight interests in topics such as ecology, interdependence, the impermanence of things, our relationship to history, our experience of nature, and considerations of fragility.

About the mix:
Given the theme of the mix series, I chose tracks that have a strong evocative quality, whether that is conjuring up the feeling of a kind of sonic environment or transporting me to specific moments/phases in my life. For the most part, the tracks tend towards the melancholy, which I suppose says something about my own dispositions.  There is a lot that could be said about this music, but I hope listeners enjoy discovering the connections and experience something meaningful.

I don't really have a single "crucial sound experience" that played a fundamental role; or rather, I likely have too many!
Here a few that come to mind:
Lying at the feet of my parent's stereo listening to Depeche Mode's 101 as a child
Watching Miloš Forman's Amadeus, specifically the scene where Salieri describes Mozart's music
Playing Resident Evil 4 in the dark of my teenage bedroom
Skateboarding in a parking lot in the summer in Las Vegas
Discovering and becoming infatuated by Bach's Matthäus Passion
Learning to play the guitar as a teen and returning to the piano as an adult

Martina Berther and Philipp Schlotter are prolific in their respective ways, having been active in pop and jazz music, respectively, as well as playing in bands and exploring the outer fringes of sound art or composing music for film. Their first joint album »Matt« was recorded over the course of four days in a church in the Swiss village after which the album was named. Berther and Schlotter worked with the buildingʼs organ as well as synthesizers and electric bass to follow an experimental approach that oscillated between composition and free improvisation. The five pieces, recorded directly to tape by Flo Götte without any additional overdubs, are characterised by an intimacy and rawness that calls to mind the introspective atmosphere of Hallow Ground label mateʼs FUJI||||||||||TA or mastering engineer Lawrence Englishʼs latest album for the Swiss label. »Matt« is the result of two versatile composers and musicians executing minimalist ideas by giving them plenty of space to unfold.

The album opens with »Unruhe,« a composition that is based on the twelve-tone technique. Using a stopwatch to ensure the adherence to the pre-determined temporal intervals between the individual notes, Berther and Schlotter used the church organ and synthesizers for an ominous piece that traverses different moods and levels of intensity throughout its 14-minute run time. »LFO1« and »LFO2« are different variations of the same concept: Based on a synthesizer preset and structured by an organ drone, two tone generators slowly fall silent, resulting in elegiac pieces that call to mind the work of Éliane Radigue. »Frachter« and »Gallia« put more emphasis on percussive elements. Again working with organ as well as Bertherʼs prepared electric bass, this improvisation comprises interlocking textures that sound almost menacing on »Frachter,« while they create a very different atmosphere on »Gallia.« These notable discrepancies in sound and mood are even more astonishing if you consider that the two pieces are based on the exact same recording, played at different speeds.

As two variations on the same idea with very different results, these two pieces perfectly represent how the duo effectively creates emotionally affective sound worlds with very few means. Berther and Schlotterʼs conceptual minimalism yields rewarding, multi-faceted aesthetic results. »Matt« is an intimate album, marked by a sense of vividness and spontaneity, but also the product of compositional conciseness.

MARTINA BERTHER / PHILIPP SCHLOTTER - LFO 1 (HG2305)

Giovanni Corgiat makes his debut in the extended format and releases his first album under the Catalan label Hedonic Reversal. This Italian artist is a sound perfectionist and a dedicated composer who constantly explores new musical forms due to his diverse training. He graduated in Electronic Engineering from the Politecnico di Torino, completed his studies in Electronic Music Production at the SAE Institute in Milan, and obtained a degree in Electroacoustic Music Composition from the Conservatory "Giuseppe Verdi" in Turin. His dissertation focused on the development of morphing systems and the integration of musical elements.

Antropo-Amorfo is his first album, but it is also an audiovisual project developed with Riccardo Franco-Loiri, aka Akasha, a promising Italian visual artist, member of the prestigious High School of Music and member of the consolidated High Files collective that Akasha co-founded in 2018. The result is a fine speculation on the perception of sound and its relation to human nature, combined with an innovative and creative investigation into digital abstract art. Antropo-Amorfo has already been presented as A/V performance at events such as Paratissima Festival (Ita), Apolide Festival (Ita) and Blues Rauschen (Ger).

ANTROPO-AMORFO A/V project was born by the fortuitous encounter between Giovanni Corgiat Mecio aka Corgiat and Riccardo Franco-Loiri, aka Akasha. The Live Show was conceived by mixing abstraction with concrete forms through extreme manipulation of data and signals in order to seek the point of contact between the ephemeral and the tangible world.

All tracks have been composed using analog synths and processors, real instruments. Raw and free recordings of voice (Claudio lo Russo, Luana Monisteri, Giulia Impache), percussions (Davide Broggini), saxophone (Angelo Rodio), double bass and cello (Piero Poli) have been stretched, morphed and filter to create an interpenetration between physical, analog and digital world. The result is a bpm-less continuous flow of gestures that follow one another spontaneously.

Corgiat at the audio with Ableton live, controller and analog gear communicates with Akasha’s Touchdesigner instances through MAX/MSP patches and OSC in real time, creating an endless A/V flow that hypnotises the audience while sparking new existential questions around human essence.
