Yona Marie’s new single “I'm Still Loyal” is a dedication to those who have provided their friends, family members, or romantic partners with unyielding love and loyalty over time. Yona has created an anthem that anyone that has given or received authentic love will be able to relate to and remind themselves of how much a blessing having a loyal person in your corner can be. The simplistic writing and production with early 2010 hip-hop vibes feed into the feeling of love and loyalty between souls that have been connected over the last several years.

I am still pinching myself that this interview happened. Having the honor and opportunity to talk with the creator of the best-selling lesbian magazine in the world is a dream come true. The added bonus was talking with Jen Rainin (Director, Co-Producer) and Rivkah Beth Medow (Producer, Co-Director) whose company Frankly Speaking Films produce media that centers strong LGBTQ+ women and non-binary people to increase visibility and spark change.

I am referring to Franco Stevens and Curve Magazine, which started in San Francisco, California (U.S.) back in 1990. The magazine’s legacy inspired AHEAD OF THE CURVE which documents the 20-year history of the first lesbian magazine to represent every facet of queer women. The cast includes GRAMMY-winning bassist and composer Meshell Ndegeocello, who composed the original score, and GRAMMY-winning icon Melissa Etheridge who was the first major celebrity to grace the cover (when it was still Deneuve). In fact, from inception to fruition every person involved in making this film are women and non-binary.

I talk candidly with all three women about the making of this herstorical documentary, and how Curve Magazine made such a positive impact on the lesbian community. The magazine has evolved from a printed publication to exclusively online. In April 2021 the Curve Foundation was founded, whose mission is to empower lesbian, queer women, trans people, and non-binary people to share our culture and our stories, connect with each other, and raise visibility.

Episode 30 took place on location at the wonderful Mercantile Saloon in the Gay Mecca of downtown Sacramento, CA back on July 9, 2016.  DJ and Myki met up with Myki’s long time friend John Hayden for an impromptu interview to discuss the update from the results of the much talked-about and successful Verity Baptist Peaceful Protest and Rally that was held June 19th.  Created by John Hayden, he recruited Beverly Kearney (Love Is Love Movement) as his assistant to lead over 1,000 supporters of the LGBTQI Community at the front door of the Sacramento Verity Baptist Church to protest the preachings of Pastor Roger Jimenez.  Jimenez was criticized for celebrating the murder of 49 people during the horrific mass shooting that took place just one week earlier in Orlando, Florida at the Pulse Gay Club on June 12th.

Our episode isn’t entirely heavy on the topics; we open the show with absolutely hilarity and close the show discussing dating apps vs. meeting in person.

30: LGBTQ Activist John Hayden, Real Gay Talk, and The Verity Baptist Peaceful Protest

Myki welcomes the fantastical world violinist Joe Kye. She traveled to downtown Sacramento back on June 4, 2016 and met up with Joe to discuss what is going on with his music career in 2016. We enjoyed a break in the rain sitting outside in the gorgeous sunshine as Joe shares what it was like to perform at the Bernie Sander’s Presidential Rally; life-changing to say the least! Plus, I learn that Joe has extended his talents to producing. He is currently working with  Angeles Hip Hop/Spoken Word Artist, Jason Chu. 

It was such a pleasure talking with Joe and learn of his history as an immigrant Asian music artist.  He will be relocating to Oregon in July, but not before performing two more shows in the Sacramento area!  One show in particular is a fund-raiser to benefit the Mustard Seed School – the Seed To Sprout show at Beatnik Studios June 10th.  I play his tune, ‘Happy Song‘ in this episode!
