Yona Marie’s new single “I'm Still Loyal” is a dedication to those who have provided their friends, family members, or romantic partners with unyielding love and loyalty over time. Yona has created an anthem that anyone that has given or received authentic love will be able to relate to and remind themselves of how much a blessing having a loyal person in your corner can be. The simplistic writing and production with early 2010 hip-hop vibes feed into the feeling of love and loyalty between souls that have been connected over the last several years.

I am still pinching myself that this interview happened. Having the honor and opportunity to talk with the creator of the best-selling lesbian magazine in the world is a dream come true. The added bonus was talking with Jen Rainin (Director, Co-Producer) and Rivkah Beth Medow (Producer, Co-Director) whose company Frankly Speaking Films produce media that centers strong LGBTQ+ women and non-binary people to increase visibility and spark change.

I am referring to Franco Stevens and Curve Magazine, which started in San Francisco, California (U.S.) back in 1990. The magazine’s legacy inspired AHEAD OF THE CURVE which documents the 20-year history of the first lesbian magazine to represent every facet of queer women. The cast includes GRAMMY-winning bassist and composer Meshell Ndegeocello, who composed the original score, and GRAMMY-winning icon Melissa Etheridge who was the first major celebrity to grace the cover (when it was still Deneuve). In fact, from inception to fruition every person involved in making this film are women and non-binary.

I talk candidly with all three women about the making of this herstorical documentary, and how Curve Magazine made such a positive impact on the lesbian community. The magazine has evolved from a printed publication to exclusively online. In April 2021 the Curve Foundation was founded, whose mission is to empower lesbian, queer women, trans people, and non-binary people to share our culture and our stories, connect with each other, and raise visibility.

Season 3: Episode 1 - I have the pleasure of talking with dear friend Jennifer C. about the Disney animated feature Encanto, focusing primarily on the women who bring this film to life and the incredible representation of Colombian culture throughout the movie.

Jennifer C. is a Colombian American blogger, content creator, speaker and creative. As one-half of the sister duo @CurlyCurvyPassion on social media and the web since 2016, Jennifer advocates for empowerment through real talk about natural hair, body love, community & culture. Encanto is Disney’s first film that truly encapsulates the culture and nuances of Colombia. From the storyline and historical references to the symbolism of the costumes and music soundtrack. Encanto is the 60th film by Disney with all original songs written by multi-award winning playwright/producer/director Lin-Manuel Miranda. Every effort was made in being as true and authentic to the creation of this animated feature.

The Co-director and Co-writer Charise Castro Smith is from Miami, Florida and raised in a Cuban family. Germaine Franco composed the film and has shattered the glass ceiling for Latina composers. She is the first female composer for a Disney animated feature, the first Latina composer invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences music branch and to receive the Annie Award for Outstanding Achievement for Music in an Animated Feature (COCO). Plus, Franco is the first female composer to be hired by DreamWorks Animation and Pixar.

The soundtrack for Encanto hit the ground running upon its release in November 2021. Within two weeks, it reached number 1 on Billboard 200, dethroning Adele’s 30. It is the first Disney film since Frozen II to top the chart. Up for several award nominations, it has won seven so far including Best Animated Film and Best Animated Female (Stephanie Beatriz) at the Alliance of Women Film Journalists Awards. It also garnered two Golden Globe nominations for Best Motion Picture, Best Original Score, and a won a Golden Globe award for Best Original Song for “Dos Oruguitas”.

An impressive seven songs from the album appeared on the US Billboard Hot 100, led by “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” – which was the soundtrack’s most popular song. it reached number one on the Spotify Top 50 US chart on January 10, 2022. The single “Surface Pressure” reached number 10, making Encanto the first Disney animated film to have generated multiple top-10 songs on the Hot 100. “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” is the first-ever original Disney song to top the chart.

On the UK Singles Chart, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”, “Surface Pressure” and “The Family Madrigal” have peaked at numbers one, five and fifteen, respectively.

Nearly all the female voice roles were cast by Latina artists who act and sing on the soundtrack, and all of Colombian or Cuban descent.  Actress Angélica María Cepeda Jiménez who voices Julieta (Maribel’s mom), is born in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. Carolina del Pilar Gaitán Lozano who voices Pepa Madrigal (Aunt) is born in Villavicencio, Meta, Colombia.

The main character Maribel Madrigal is voiced by Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), who was born in Neuquén, Argentina. Maribel’s sisters are voiced by Jessica Darrow (Luisa, a Cuban-American born in Miami) and Diane Guerrero (Isabela, Colombian born in New Jersey). The only character with a separate voice actress and singer is ‘Abuela’ Alma Madrigal. She is voiced by actress Maria Cecilia Botero Cadavid (Colombian), with actress Olga Merediz (Cuban) providing the vocals.

How Disney got it Right Culturally with Encanto

Some women are childfree by choice while others are childless due to circumstances, not choice. CC: Infertility and Celebrating "Others Day" with Lana Manikowski

Episode 30 took place on location at the wonderful Mercantile Saloon in the Gay Mecca of downtown Sacramento, CA back on July 9, 2016.  DJ and Myki met up with Myki’s long time friend John Hayden for an impromptu interview to discuss the update from the results of the much talked-about and successful Verity Baptist Peaceful Protest and Rally that was held June 19th.  Created by John Hayden, he recruited Beverly Kearney (Love Is Love Movement) as his assistant to lead over 1,000 supporters of the LGBTQI Community at the front door of the Sacramento Verity Baptist Church to protest the preachings of Pastor Roger Jimenez.  Jimenez was criticized for celebrating the murder of 49 people during the horrific mass shooting that took place just one week earlier in Orlando, Florida at the Pulse Gay Club on June 12th.

Our episode isn’t entirely heavy on the topics; we open the show with absolutely hilarity and close the show discussing dating apps vs. meeting in person.
