How do you know if your knee injury is serious?
Knee injuries are among the most common injuries in sports. With many more people taking part in exercise we are seeing more people coming to the clinic with problems.

Fortunately, for most of the patients I see in my clinic, their knee injuries do not require surgery. If you suffer a knee injury, what are the signs your knee injury is serious? Is it worth seeing an orthopaedic surgeon?

This list is far from comprehensive, but here are seven signs that might mean you have a serious knee injury that possibly requires surgery.

Here at My Knee Doc we are firm believers in the old adage that “prevention is better than cure”.

Whilst we can’t always turn back the hands of time and undo the consequences of a life lived to the full, there is now a large body of evidence confirming that exercise can and does help many people manage their knee problems.

We know that people who’ve suffered knee injuries such as ACL tears or cartilage tears can regain a good level of function and even return to high level sports with the right physiotherapy and exercise programs.

Replacing worn-out bone and cartilage from your knee, with metal and plastic is still a major operation. It almost always requires a hospital stay and months of rehabilitation and therapy for you to regain motion, strength, and the ability to do daily activities. For very active people, these procedures often mean being less active than you would like to be.
The good news is that we are entering a period in healthcare and in particular in orthopaedic surgery when it’s becoming possible to treat osteoarthritis without surgery. Some of these treatments relieve the pain and swelling that make it hard for you to run, play sports and do other activities you love to do.

How do steroid injections work for knee pain?
If your knee joints are very painful and inflamed, or you need extra pain-relief, you may be offered a steroid injection to treat your knee pain.

The steroid injection can reduce the inflammation in your joint which in turn should reduce your knee pain.

Steroid injections can’t treat the underlying cause of your condition, but they can treat the symptoms.

Some steroid injections start to relieve pain within hours and the effects should last about a week.
