Max Graef and Julius Conrad are Ratgrave. 'Rock' is their second LP ~ ongoing transmissions of Electronic P-Fusion from Earth.

It follows a stellar debut on Funkineven's imprint Apron. The duo's sound pallette draws inspiration from 80's funk, soul, rock and electronic but through a contemporary lens from two versatile multi-instrumentalists. In their own words:

"Rock is the essence of energy and vibration we felt in different styles of music, almost like a parallel component connecting all things we like. In the process of recording the new album we kept coming back to this essence no matter what style the original idea was. There was the raw and brutal energy of Jazz-Rock, a lot of video game influences that somehow adhered this essence just as well as quieter Pop and Psychedelic passages that we recorded. Among other things we absorbed a lot of heavy music during the time of the recording like Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath, Frank Zappa or Jimi Hendrix and realized while writing our own music how much impact they had even on quieter songs. This is why "Rock“ felt like the perfect title although the music ranges from P-Funk and Spiritual Jazz to various styles of Pop and beyond.“

Nomadic producer Zen in Space releases LP Earth Tones, following two consecutively sold-out 12” releases on Moonshoe [MSH003] and Post Pluto [PPC001]. The warm & lush textures of Earth Tones were produced over 2 years with inspiration taken across Australia’s vast & captivating landscape. 

Here, we hear an array of sounds from ambient to downtempo, as well as experimental electronic. Earth Tones features various live instrumentation, analogue synthesis, drum machines and exotic rainforest, outback & wilderness field recordings; captured throughout Australia’s rich landscapes. Zen took big inspiration from artists such as four tet, boards of canada, floating points & leafar legov, to name a few, in creation of this project. 

Earth Tones aims to encapsulate the intense beauty of natural earth in all its shapes and forms, and the value we must give to its diverse landscapes & life. Earth Tones hopes to bring attention to the value & significance in preserving & respecting natural ecosystems & their deeply delicate & ancient systems.

DC Promo Tracks #625: Arvo Dolani "Anonymous Bungalow"

Turned on by a new dawn of chemical love, Sydney dance-funk combo Bellydance laid down their sampledelica blueprint in 1991, thinking in parallel with Weatherall’s revelatory work with Primal Scream. A candy flip of streetsoul, festival jam band and Chip Monck’s cautionary brown acid address, 3 Days Man! was primed for open fields and discotheques, in an age when the deejay was royalty.

With an elastic lineup that boasted up to 9 members, Bellydance synchronised more with the club scene than the city’s straight-ahead pub rock racket, naturally recruiting hometown heroes Peewee and John Ferris to remix their multi-track concoction. A certified party closing anthem, the brother’s sun-smacked breakbeats elevate a collective consciousness beyond the clouds.

Originally issued on Regular Records sub-label Boomshanka Music as a precursor to their album One Blood, the John Peel approved 12” sported characteristic artwork from Mambo visionary and Mental As Anything co-founder Reg Mombassa. Instigated by Sydney selector Ben Fester, this Efficient Space reboot arrives fashionably late to Woodstock’s 50th anniversary but just in time to help soothe universal division.

The seven tracks on Obaa Sima traverse a pop music landscape that encapsulates international modes--rap, techno, saccharine melodies—while reflecting contemporary Ghanaian music via highlife-style refrains, aggressive rapping and use of Twi language. Inspired by a Grand Master Flash & The Furious Five performance of “New York New York” he saw on television, Atta wanted to rap on his new project. (Melle Mel's look on a 1983 German TV performance of the song bares an uncanny resemblance to Atta's image on his cassette cover.) He was not aware of the hiplife—localized rap—movement in Ghana, in its very infancy by 1994 when Obaa Sima was released. Rapping in English didn't feel comfortable and he began writing and practicing rhyming in Twi, the most widely-spoken language in Ghana. The distinctive rapping on Obaa Sima became one of the earliest and most intrepid examples of Twi rap in a period when young rappers in Accra and Kumasi were still mimicking Tupac and Shaggy.
