Myrh had been preparing for this meeting for a long time. The man, whom everyone called only "The Beast", came to the settlement in which she was the ruler. The beast was known for always collecting exorbitant tribute from all villages, and he did not care how people would live after he left.
Myrh treated him to a joint, and then he began to talk about money, and His face gradually began to resemble a pig's snout. Myrh answered him about the farmers. No money, no food. No food, no farmers. No farmers - no money! Ferstein?

And he understood.

This is something new for me. This song is obviously about the great songwriter from Texas, Townes Van Zandt. He was called by Kris Kristofferson, and others, a songwriter's songwriter, the highest compliment.

Despite receiving critical acclaim for his work, and publishing several albums, he received very little money during his career and led a very modest life. We lost this amazing talent in 1997. He was only 52.

Steve Earle, who was mentored by TVZ, said he made mistakes at critical junctures of his career, sabotaging any chance of his star rising beyond the admiration of his peers and a smattering of hipsters. If you are not familiair with his work, it would be time well spent to listen.

It seems he was content making art, for the sake of art. At true artist and one of the greatest songwriters to ever live.

I am humbled by his work. I have a few others songs in the spirit of Townes Van Zandt and others of his ilk. If this goes well, there might be other "talking blues" songs from this quarter.

The basic tracks for some of these songs were scattered through other music I had recorded over the last ten years.  Quarantine has given me the time to hear some of this music with fresh ears. In most instances dozens of instrument tracks were stripped away to find some forgotten core that made me nod or smile.  Then I started again.  All new recording has been done since the start of lock down and tries to put a sound on the subtle dislocation of a global disaster that is mostly (for me) expressed in my daily life as an absence, a taking away rather than a presence; a distantly felt thing.
