The Birth of Infinity

Back in early 2019, I released a single called Distant Visions. After hearing it, a fan commented:
“Almost sounds like something from a second interstellar suite.”

They were referring to my 2006 album The Maestoso Interstellar Suite—a project I re-released with extended material in 2016 for its 10-year anniversary. That comment stuck with me. Did it feel like a sequel? Could it be?

I toyed with the idea. But having just expanded the suite into a double-disc format in 2016, I wasn’t sure a sequel was the right move—especially given how the original was structured as a continuous, uninterrupted journey. I had also briefly considered a vinyl edition, but the flow of the piece and the 22-minute-per-side vinyl limit made it a poor fit for that format. The experience would have been compromised.

Around that time, I released a “radio edit” version of the suite called Singularities to provide an accessible entry point. But if I returned to the suite with new material, I feared I’d be stuck doing the same thing again: a full continuous version and a separate edited version. Frankly, I didn’t want to go through that process again—and since then, I’ve moved away from long single-track formats entirely.

Even then, I was already thinking about vinyl-friendly runtimes, aiming to keep my future projects under 44 minutes so they could fit comfortably on a single LP. I’ve also significantly upgraded my gear and virtual instrument libraries since that time, giving me access to orchestral and hybrid textures I could only dream of back then. Now I have the tools—but what should I do with them?

I thought: Maybe I don’t need a sequel at all. Maybe it’s not about making The Maestoso Interstellar Suite Part II, or Return to Maestoso, or anything like that. Maybe I just need to reimagine the entire idea as something ongoing—something open.

Looking back, I always felt I had to make compromises when producing the 10-year edition. Some sounds weren’t what I was hearing in my head. Hardware limitations forced me to bounce tracks just to finish mixing. I wanted that big, lush, hybrid orchestral sound—and I couldn’t quite get there.

Now I can.

And I’ve got older projects—like La Famille Du Solénoïde (The Family of Sol)—waiting for a modern update. Thematically, they fit perfectly.

So I’ve made a decision:
I’m not making a sequel to The Maestoso Interstellar Suite.

Instead, I’m creating something bigger.

Introducing Infinity

Infinity is an evolving series. A collection of volumes. A universe of sound that has no end—only pauses between stars. It’s not a sequel. It’s not a remix. It’s a living archive of exploration—part ambient, part orchestral, part space music, and completely me.

And to start, I’ll revisit the music that inspired it all.

I’ll go back and refine The Maestoso Interstellar Suite one final time—polish the edges, rework the structure to be vinyl-compatible, and finally bring it closer to what I always heard in my head.

But I won’t just re-release it.

I’ll rebrand it.

The Journey Begins

The Infinity series begins with:

Infinity Volume I – The Maestoso Interstellar Suite

Infinity Volume II – Singularities

Each will stand on its own—but together, they form the beginning of something open-ended. Something I can return to any time inspiration calls.

Infinity has no final tracklist. No end. Only volumes.

And when I’m ready, I’ll add another.

Maybe it’s a crazy idea. But that’s okay—I’m doing this for me.
And I hope you’ll enjoy the journey too.

Intermission II

Please explore this soundscape "Beyond the Event Horizon."  This composition expresses a journey through the depths of space and time - featuring a slow, evolving atmosphere that builds attention and anticipation, inviting listeners to explore the unknown - what lies beyond, both musically and conceptually.  Using my MIDI keyboard and high C whistle, I improvised over a C chord made of entirely C notes.  I crafted the song with a blend of synthesizer sounds inspired by "Event Horizon" and Chords of Trance."  The MIDI and whistle were routed through Logic Pro and the sounds were enhanced with Valhalla DSP effects. 

The title"Beyond the Event Horizon" refers to the boundary surrounding a black hole.  A black hole is a region in space where gravity is so strong that nothing can escape from it, not even light.  This mysterious phenomenon challenges our understanding of the universe and time.

A good friend, resident DJ, label boss and founder of The Bunker NY, Bryan Kasenic doesn't usually need an introduction. We'd long seen his sorcery at the helm of the controls at numerous local gatherings, working dance floors with the precision only one with a few decades doing it could, what we'd yet to see was what he'd do on the 'ambient dance floor' i.e. Hypnotic Spa at Nowadays. Mysteries of the Deep CXX - Matthew Patterson Curry

Guy Hobsbawm, the new alias of Gunnar Haslam, offers Mysteries a debut LP that is perfectly tailored to the times. Communes Qui Poussent Comme Des Champignons Après Le Déluge, which literally translates to ‘communes that grew like mushrooms after the flood’, is sparse and cinematic: an ideal score to any dystopian film. Except “dystopia” denotes an imaginary or speculative scenario, and what Hobsbawm has created is a natural reaction to the current global crisis as it relates to the past. In his own words, the title “pictures the flood of hunger, economic depression, and wide-scale political instability that was the background of 1848, draws links to the coming flood of 2020, and (tries to) imagine a brighter future of communes growing like mushrooms.”

The conceptual framework of 1848 and the ideologies of Louis-Auguste Blanqui, serves to mold the sonic landscape. In these pieces, there’s a focus on absence rather than presence. Sparse, long-form arrangements, like “Blanquistes du Nil” and the cricket-laden “Exil au Serir” seem to conjure a world in which the earth has supplanted man, or moved on without him. Many of these tracks make use of natural instrumentation and field recordings taken by Hobsbawm in North Africa and Mexico, to haunting effect. The lapping water and creaking wood in “Palermo, June 1848” suggest the residue of a flood, thereby linking the sonic to the conceptual. The final track, “Fustat,” which builds tension through metallic clangs and a Japanese sho, is an homage to Iannis Xenakis, the pioneering Greek-French composer. Guy Hobsbawm has taken the strange predicament of our global climate and created a cohesive album that represents the despair of the present — while connecting it to the past. The result is a landscape that is both foreign and familiar: a sonic paradox that represents the recurrence of a dark history. And yet within this, there is a glimmer of hope for a different future.

It is undeniable that we are living in uncertain times. For those of us failing to fit the patriarchal neoliberalist mould, we have lost hope in the future. We can see capitalism is not working but we cannot yet envisage an alternative. In a world where security is no longer feasible, the only constant we can rely on is change. Regardless of one’s point of reference, we can understand that every aspect of life, physical and mental is in flux and perhaps this transience is the only thing we can depend on.

This month we have invited @aloisyang to ruminate on these ideas and create an hour of relief from these anxieties. A temporary suspension of reality, where the listener can speculate on alternate modes of existence that reject hetero-patriarchal systems of oppression.

Aloïs Yang is a media artist, performer and experimental musician who produces work that explores the relation and interaction between people, sound, and the external world. The work is influenced both by scientific reference and human imperfection of understanding the nature. Interaction in Yang’s work takes place not just in objective reality, but also inside of intimate experience and imaginative projection. These includes traveling among such varied subjects as brain function, facial expression, micro/macro realities, virtual time-space, starlight, apocalypse, and the beginning of the Universe.

The next instalment in the Theory Therapy series comes from a particularly special selector, Russia's Sophia Zhuravkova.

Sophia adores nature and it clearly shines through in all of her work. In what seems like a very short space of time, the composer has established herself as one of the most impressive young ambient artists to emerge from Russia in recent years. In 2020, she captivated us with an appearance on Stay in Bed Vol.2 — released on DJ Earl Grey's Best Effort Records — put out her debut LP Unseen on Prins Emmanuel's excellent Ny Agenda imprint and then gifted us with the expansive Obstacles in October. Like the best ambient producers, her music expertly balances background and foreground. Field recordings — from spoken word and white noise to the soft lapping of waves — intersect with more melodic passages: reverberant drones, diffuse pads and the occasional acoustic instrument. 

The same can be said of her Theory Therapy mix. It replicates the experience of being somewhere special — like the stillness of an empty park or a rainy city sunrise after a night out. Sonically, it is both intimate and immersive; synths, dronescapes and haunting vocals pull you into where it was recorded: in the warm confines of her home during a wintry day in Kiev. So put the kettle on and get comfortable; this is music made to be listened to closely.

Mysteries of the Deep is a New York-based record label, podcast, and event series — focused on ambient & experimental music in various forms. Mysteries — as fans lovingly call it — is concerned with exploration of unknown realms, and its focus, in addition to showcasing a dynamic spectrum of electronic music from foremost artists in the field, is to thoughtfully engage its audience. 

Conceptualized in 2011, Mysteries began as a podcast series that, now in its eleventh year, has hosted an array of mixes and original works. The project has since evolved, expanding into a curated global event series and record label.
