Mysteries of the Deep CXXI - Heidi Sabertooth | Arc of Nightmares

Tyler Friedman returns to Kontra-Musik with Epiphytic, an improvisational vortex of psychedelic modular synthesizer lines, made in one continuous take. A stylistic shift from Friedman’s previous releases on Kontra, the album eschews percussion in favor of an intense pulsing spectrality, situating the music both on the fringes of club culture and in the concert hall.

The title—Epiphytic—which refers to a type of plant that grows on the surface of another, non-parasitically, is a metaphor for the way the interlacing and divergent arpeggiations co-exist, forming a larger harmonic structure. The system used in the production of the album acts as a seed to be built upon in a live setting, where the piece can evolve into more esoteric tonalities and rhythms. While Epiphytic is an exploration of 7 limit Just Intonantion, future releases and performances will grow into different tunings and tempos, shifting the genre between fourth world fm, microtonal abstraction and clouds of noise bliss, generating a work in permanent flux.

It is undeniable that we are living in uncertain times. For those of us failing to fit the patriarchal neoliberalist mould, we have lost hope in the future. We can see capitalism is not working but we cannot yet envisage an alternative. In a world where security is no longer feasible, the only constant we can rely on is change. Regardless of one’s point of reference, we can understand that every aspect of life, physical and mental is in flux and perhaps this transience is the only thing we can depend on.

This month we have invited @kamarujoseph to ruminate on these ideas and create an hour of relief from these anxieties. A temporary suspension of reality, where the listener can speculate on alternate modes of existence that reject hetero-patriarchal systems of oppression.

KMRU is the moniker of Joseph Kamaru, a sound artist, and producer based in Nairobi. He is a regular performer at the fabled Nyegenyege Festival having also presented live performances at CTM festival and Gamma Festival. Aside from his music production, KMRU has also been presenting a monthly show on Internet Public Radio and runs the Nairobi Ableton User Group community as well as developing projects on radio art and artificial intelligence. KMRU recently participated at Mutek Montreal AI Art Lab and Gamma Lab XR (2020) collaborating on artistic based projects on artificial intelligence and extended realities.

Ariel Kalma is inspired by rhythms, melodies and grooves from various cultures, ambient atmospheres, modal music, native instruments and nature. Ariel likes to experiment with music: mix traditional sounds with modern arrangements, use electronica and special effects, play circular breathing on winds and didgeridoo, create original sounds from synthesizers. Ariel blends styles of music to produce original compositions with flavours of his own. His songs touch deep feelings of the search for simple truth in a metaphorical poetry.

During his study of Electronics, Computer Science, Music and Art at Paris University, Ariel Kalma was also performing with several bands and touring the world, visiting Asia, Africa, Japan, Canada and Europe, always listening to, sometimes playing with, the music and the people: different scales, colours of sound, timing and rhythms.

Frank D’Arpino, born in Düsseldorf, started playing records as a selector in the early ’90s (as DJ Fanta, later DJ Phanta). “It makes no sense to do a "dance-mix“ , when you are forced to be disconnect from all the people you usually share time, space and music with. But I wanted to do a mix with a couple of tracks which might be danceable for some people in certain situations.
It was done in one take and during the process in my own living-room I saw and felt glimpses of these moments we all love. (especially in my other living room Salon des Amateurs) Take care!”

Conceptualized in 2011, Mysteries began as a podcast series that, now in its eleventh year, has hosted an array of mixes and original works. The project has since evolved, expanding into a curated global event series and record label.
