This piece originated from a little melodic idea that came to me while I was humming to myself in a small but reverberant kitchen just over a year and a half ago. I was in high spirits, feeling grateful for the support of my family, close friends, a positive new relationship, and the opportunity to begin graduate studies in a field that fascinates me. While humming I came up with a little motif that evolved into a melody I thought should be set for voice or perhaps violin. Because I don’t play either of these instruments, I sang the melody into my voice recorder and allowed it to float around in my head (among other unrealized ideas, some from ten years ago). 

This April whilst in a creative stupor I found it challenging to come up with new ideas. Eventually, I decided to sit down and spend some time working with the piano to develop the idea into a composition. What was previously “a possible vocal or violin melody” began to take on a life of its own. Later when I learned @spitfireaudio was giving away their BBC Discover Strings VST in exchange for a five-minute questionnaire, I started working on the string accompaniment. Now in June, I am happy to share "Not Unearned" with you.  

Anyway, that’s enough self-indulgent musing for now but I thought I would share this in the off chance you also have a decade-long backlog of unrealized ideas to start working on.

We worked pretty hard on this percussion and drum arrangement.
As I was putting the final touches on the mix I started liking listening to it reduced in various ways.

Here is the whole song reduced (mostly) to just the drum parts.
I left some of the synth stuff in there on this run to give it a little color.

This is a drum take, three floor tom overdubs, various trashy snare sounds both real and manufactured, some triggers, samples, and manually sequenced electronic percussion stuff I wrote on the piano roll in the daw.

I have enabled downloads on this in case you want to do something of your own on it. Slice and dice it, chop it up, use parts of it - whatever. It is fairly well on the grid and I think it is 90bpm though I am not entirely certain of that because I forgot to look before I uploaded it lol. Time signatures are weird. 9/4 and 5/4 and 4/4 alternating. If you need something removed just shoot me a message and I will mute whatever track and burn you a new mix even. That's how nice we are.

Greetings to you: readers, beaders, seekers, wanderers, wonderers, outsiders, rebels, fantasy gamers, freaks, mythologists, philosophers, appreciators, creators, perpetuators of beauty, coveters of mysterious objects, collectors of counter culture, the curious, the questioners, the unusual, the unique, the star children, the light workers, shadow integrators, diviners, alchemists, hermits, monks and popes, the saviors and prophets, the builders and destroyers of worlds, the old ones, the young ones, the rollers of boulders, the sun orbiters, the morning star dewdrops and twinkle toed dreamers of dreams, you mystic shining beacons, you crossers and denizens of the void, reality shapers, universe makers and underworld freaks.

The purpose of this text is to inform you of the work that is manifesting in our folded corner of causality – a great work which holds even greater mysteries, channeled through our fleshy antennae into forms at once familiar and esoteric, bizarre and beautiful, abstract and concrete.

Mystic Tape Deck was revealed in a lucid dream state, manifesting as the convergence of several combined lifetimes of correlative causality, to serve as the ultimate vehicle to inject this series of objects into the collective mind of the cosmos. The experience of taking the plunge into our universe is akin to assembling a puzzle with no final picture on the box. It not only rewards curiosity but requires it. As the images, poems, stories and anecdotes begin to swim around in your subconscious mind, eventually a complete image will emerge.

To date, we have produced two complete multimedia books - collections of obtuse fragmented mythology, carefully crafted imagery, and glimpses of another world existing just beyond our immediate observability. A narrative of the entire history of humankind, viewed through the lens of an ancient and mysterious underground cult of creativity. A peripheral approach to storytelling that is inside out, upside down, extra dimensional and delivered to you one confounding puzzle piece at a time. Each installment in the series is accompanied by a compact disc containing musical musings which follow the theme of the text, creating a synergistic symphony of heart and mind. Each book is printed on beautiful 80 pound stock with glossy covers, perfect binding, and comes packaged to withstand the rigors of time and cosmic radiation inside a durable mylar bag with acid free backer board.

The first two books serve as an introduction to the project and some of the major players in the story. There is the enigmatic, tragic demi-deity known as “The Shining One,” obscure historic explorers searching for the secrets of eternal youth and what they discover instead, and the underground cult of renegade creators and urban “art mystics” known as “The Cloak.”

The third and fourth installations in the series will serve as a collection of poetic and musical musings on the twenty-four primary paragons from a forthcoming custom oracle deck that promises to be unlike any tarot you have ever seen or imagined.

In addition, we are planning a series of cassette-only releases known as “The Ashland Chronicles” which take place in real locations throughout the greater Pacific Northwest in the 1980’s and 90’s. It begs the question “what else is going on in the immediate world around us - what incredible stories and struggles are taking place in the lives of strangers we never meet but perhaps brush shoulders with at some point in our lives?”

Mystic Tape Deck also has a website which serves as a repository for story fragments, interviews with characters from the story, and serve as ministry and portal to make our unique products available to the wider world.

The first two books are available now for $25 from our Bandcamp page, the third book is coming soon, and many other magical things are brewing into being as we speak. Mystic Tape Deck is 100% fan-powered, we have no corporate backing, no record label, no outside producers or agents, and no hidden benefactor (note: if you are a wealthy art lover interested in helping to fund our odd odyssey, please get in touch immediately we have been waiting for you!) Our entire process Is self-directed, self-recorded, and self-produced in a “learn as we go” manner. That means generally that the production quality improves with each subsequent release as we learn more and more about how to do this as we go. We think that leads a uniquely vulnerable and transparent aspect to the project which is in itself interesting as well.

Our ultimate aim is simply to produce the work, one block upon another, until it is complete, and to break even long enough to sustain production until then. To date, the universe has been kind to us and has enabled us to get this far. But we need your continuing support and interest to get us through the complicated times ahead.
