My submission for the September 2021 "Moonthly Music" challenge. This month's theme was "ostinato."

DnB felt like a great fit for this challenge. First, I've wanted to write some liquid dnb for a while, especially after seeing videos from the Emancipator and Tipper sets at Resonance. Second, DnB is a great format for ostinato (even the drum pattern can often be considered ostinato).

For my track, I really wanted to play into the ostinato theme. The main ostinato is a piano melody that I sampled and chopped up - it plays undisturbed for the length of the track. For the first half of the song, in fact, nearly every element can be considered ostinato (aside from maybe the FX I threw in). Each sample that comes in plays and repeats a number of times, unaltered, and then drops out in favor of a new sound. I wanted to focus on a variety of sounds rather than an evolution of any one particular sound, as I thought it was a great opportunity to really experiment with "limiting" myself within the theme. The bassline, piano, bells, saxophone, and drums can all be considered to be forms of ostinato.

For the second half of the track, I wanted to mix it up and break away from what I planned in the first half, while still staying true to the overall goal of the challenge. I experimented with a few vocal samples that I introduce at first but don't focus on making real ostinatos. Instead, I try to re-introduce the sounds that appear earlier in the song and use them in new contexts. In the final section, I mix in parts from every other section of the track to try and tie everything together and breathe new life into a track that is running on 6 minutes :)
