Jordan Jessep - Twilight

This is an excert from Schoenberg's quintet for woodwinds. We've performed this great piece in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, where this recording was taken from.
This quintet is one of Schoenberg's first attempts in his newly established 12 tone methode. He has written a few rather short piano pieces before but this was a more ambitious attempt to write something of a rather large scale. The first movement is about 15 minutes long, the whole piece is around 40 minutes long. It might be very difficult to listen to at first but it has very special and exciting moments, and it's music which is very worthwhile to get to know.

Under the rubric of "Cage.88@100," NEC's piano department chair Bruce Brubaker and project director Stephen Drury brought together piano students from the entire spectrum of NEC's teaching studios for a series of concerts top celebrate the Cage Centennial .

Another week, another track premiere… but is it truly just ‘another’ track that bubbled up onto the top of this appending queue? I feel I know the work that goes in by composers. No matter if the track is short of stretched in time. Each little note, each pad evolving in its frequency band. Each slight adjustment to the volume curve, to carry forth the story in dynamics. Each atmospheric treatment with the reverbed textures. Each painstakingly placed sound in the stereo field – front, back, and center. Post-processed, mixed, and mastered; listened to on every speaker; then played and listened to again, again, and then some more, until the music feels just perfect for the only one who made it. And what about the others? Will they hear the small details, the carved out, guided path, the melodies that pierce the harmony in places, the melodies that hold the message of the piece? Who’s genuinely listening out there, consuming and appreciating the endless time and love poured into music? I know that I am. I hope you hear it too…

This is the sixth full-length for Bordeaux-based Franck Zaragoza, appearing, once again, on the beloved n5MD under his Ocoeur moniker, under which he’s been making music for over a decade now. The album embraces sound design with its melodic side of synthesizer music. So all the knob-twist-junkies of the analog and software emulations can marvel at the output that’s much more than just another jamming-late-night-sink-hole of their time. Here, Zaragoza brings it all together into a single cohesive package of an album that seeps with inspiration from its every nook. The sound is rounded and gentle, in many places very vital and organic, and then is structured in the architecture of complex rhythmic twists [check out “Glow” on the full album when it comes out tomorrow]. Meanwhile, the concept comes in with a message, of slowly fading and receding from reality, into our anti-social, virtual, and ego-feeding worlds.

Aleksandra Słyż is a composer, sound designer, and sound engineer. She is fascinated by interactive and multimedia art. In her music, she looks for connections between the human body, sound, and technology. Her works presented so far have been in the United States and Europe.

Aleksandra Słyż's debut album "Human Glory" has a dual nature. Intense and very emotional experience, built by layering, thickening, and intensifying drone parts of synthesizers (MG), intertwines with recordings created using motion sensors (BG), which created the sound recording of the choreography. Słyż is not afraid to lead the listener along winding paths - through silence and intricate details fragments of sound design, to massive, tectonic walls of sound. The precise logic of the composition naturally blends with intuition, and the album's narrative freely leads the listener from the microscale of the smallest particles of the world to epic film panoramas.

Aleksandra Słyż to kompozytorka, sound designerka, realizatorka dźwięku. Fascynuje się sztuką interaktywną i multimedialną. W swojej muzyce szuka połączeń między ludzkim ciałem, dźwiękiem i technologią. Jej prace prezentowane do tej pory były w Stanach Zjednoczonych i Europie.

Debiutancki album Aleksandry Słyż  “Human Glory” ma dwoistą naturę. Intensywne i bardzo emocjonalne doświadczenie, budowane przez nawarstwiające, gęstniejące i intensyfikujące się dronowe partie syntezatorów (MG), przenika się z nagraniami stworzonymi z wykorzystaniem sensorów ruchu (BG), dzięki którym powstał zapis dźwiękowy choreografii. Słyż nie boi się wieść słuchacza krętymi ścieżkami - przez ciszę i pełne kunsztownych detali fragmenty sound designu, aż do masywnych, tektonicznych ścian dźwięku. Precyzyjna logika kompozycji w naturalny sposób przenika się z intuicją, a narracja albumu swobodnie prowadzi słuchacza od mikroskali najmniejszych drobinek świata, do epickich filmowych panoram.

There always was a lot more to bird watching than just watching. There's no need to be an ornithologist to simply notice that birds produce a vast variety of sounds. They tweet and chirp, hoot and caw, shriek and cry, cluck and crow. They clap their wings and peck wood, they rustle with leaves and gurgle with water. Some of them vocalize to communicate. Others are trying to imitate human speech, since us, human species, are always more or less around. Recent studies suggest that listening to birdsongs helps us to relieve stress and anxiety, so some of us simply listen and record these sounds. Others are trying to manipulate the recordings turning them into something completely new. There are also those who, in reverse, try to imitate birds with a variety of methods. The "birdstape" series is dedicated to the long history of human beings discovering the sonorous aspects of ornithology.
